"Visited today pre booked dinner for we waited mins for drinks to arrive on table after being told that they had no Mojito which was a cocktail offered when we asked what cocktails were available! The waitress was new and inexperienced and asked...when ordering a Ribeye steak was it chicken or beef!! To my knowledge there is not a chicken Rib eye but gave us something to laugh about!! When our Rib Eye turned up it was basic to say the least with very limited garnish and compliments and no potatoes unless you paid and ordered as an extra. The lobster Ravioli which was clearly freshly made was not cooked and partly hard and cardboard like to eat. This was sent back and the chef was not happy about this. The manager says the chef has experience if cooking this home made ravioli for .. hard to believe! There were only items in the menu by g the e way do all felt limited to what we could order per meal was extorshoionate cost for the pieces of ravioli with a piece the size of a baby prawn inside the ravioli so this was sent back as un eatable. We were then advised that the chef tasted the food and saw it as acceptable which was even more worrying! By thus time the rib eye steak eaters had finished their meals and we ordered both a starter with salad tk keep it quick and easy. These were eaten and were nice. One in the largers were pulled too short fir the measure in the glass, each larger was per larger Amstel beer more expensive that A top London restaurant. Porn star Martin was the same filled up to shirt in the glass with no trimmings if passion fruit or anything to be specific no fruit at all. This place did nit used to be run like this! We were shocked and will never go back again! Do not waste your money as there are far better food choices and for cheaper elsewhere! Plus they kept saying they don’t have many drinks that were requested. Many wi Ed out if stick. No diet lemonade. A very horrible and embarrassing experience as we took family there and had told them o Edd buoys experience had been very good. We could nit expect them to pay for each meal so went and paid ourselves to save face!!! Just awful!!!!"

The Duck Inn

"The Duck is a great traditional country gastropub serving modern, traditional British food. The pub has a fairly remote location in a little village about 5 miles from Canterbury. Its unassuming exterior reveals a cosy, simple yet elegant interior with scrubbed oak tables, an open fire, a beautiful garden and views across the surrounding countryside. We enjoyed a 3 course dinner here on a Saturday evening. Whilst the food was really good there were a few minor issues with our mains. We started the evening with the tempura local cod which came with a creamy and rich Durban curry mayonnaise, lime and coriander which was absolutely delicious. Then for mains we had the slow roasted pork belly with roasted carrots, carrot puree, greens, burnt apple purée and mash and the 30 day aged ribeye steak with a mixed leaf salad, truffle and parmesan fries. The presentation was excellent and the dishes were flavoursome with generous portion sizes but the steak was cooked more medium than medium rare and one of the pieces of pork was over cooked and a little dry and chewy with an impenetrable piece of crackling which was virtually impossible to cut. For dessert we enjoyed the spring berry Eton mess with raspberry sorbet washed down with a glass of Chateau Delmond Sauternes 2018 which were both superb. The staff looked stressed and were a little unfriendly at times. There were only two members of staff covering both the bar and restaurant and whilst there were only a few tables occupied they were clearly struggling. Sadly this is a reflection of the times with the hospitality industry in general struggling to find and retain staff. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our meal and the fine dining experience. The menu is forward thinking and innovative and the chef is clearly very talented. The prices are very reasonable and apparently they do the best Sunday roast here for miles around which, of itself, is a great reason to return (and that we will most definitely be doing)."

"The food at the Millers Arms was better than any pub food I had had in the UK. Even better than any restaurant food I had had. Our inn keeper recommended the Miller’s Arms as a pub and we were checking out historic pubs in that area of Canterbury, after taking photos of the crooked house. We looked at various menus, couldn’t find anything compelling and so decided to find the pub our inn keeper had recommended. The tortelloni option sounded good so we went inside. The bartender was very friendly and did not mind that I asked to sample a cider, which was good, so I got a pint. My wife sampled one Chardonnay, which she didn’t like, and the bartender steered her to one she did. He let us sit wherever we wanted, and there were very nice tables in the back with pleasant views. The tortelloni was to die for. The sauce was made with shallots and as I am not a foodie I was thinking it’d be OK, but not great—you see I’m just thinking of a shallot as an onion light, but this sauce wasn’t like that, more like a sweet—but not overly sweet—chutney, with minced hazelnuts, and I’ve never tried to write about food, so just try it sometime if you like tortelloni. OK, long review for a good meal. The reason I am writing this is because our server, a co-owner of the inn (we found out later) was so nice. As an American tourist in England—even with British relatives—I still feel like I make some social mistakes, but our server (somehow) just let us feel relaxed and enjoy the meal. For dessert I had the chocolate rum tart—to die for, again—and my wife had green tea panna cotta, as she wanted something lighter, and that was also exquisite."
