"My visit to Sens was a really short one as I was visiting friends in Les Siege. As a treat my hosts had booked this restaurant for the last night if my visit. When we arrived the sun was just setting so you could see...the glow of the sun reflected on the windows which gave you a view of the Yonn river on three sides of the building. We were shown to our table by the owners wife who wore a beautiful black dress that really blended well with the ambiance of the restaurant. Within a few minutes a range of pre-starter nibbles started to arrive together with the menu which was presented in the most unusual curved rack. To say that my French is worst than my Spanish would be an understatement (O'Level French which had not been used since the 70s), so let my hosts order my drink. Champagne being the only sparkling wine they had so I was happy. Patrick Gauthier himself came to offer the menu we each chose which was the chef's special, dish of the day'. He explained each dish and offered the chef's alternative to parts of the menu. The first dish, the starter was a salmon caviar, followed by a tomato gazpacho with a gorgeous mustard cream which complemented the gazpacho beautifully. The next dish was a mushroom with a steamed egg. I can't eat runny eggs so was offered an alternative to the egg, beautifully cooked ducks liver which I had never had before but...oh what a dish! food... The main, a fish dish and since I was offered an alternative fish to that which was on the menu, I decided to go for the sea bass option. The sea bass lay on a bed of assorted vegetables with a side of incredibly creamy rattes mashed/pureed potatoes. Another dish I could not fault, just delicious, delicious, delicious! By now I was wondering if I had any room for dessert...but yes I did! There was no way I would not eat the mouth watering' raspberry dessert when it arrived. It was not too sweet but just tingled my taste buds. When the first cheese tray arrived I thought that was it but FOUR trays arrived with a rich assortment of cheeses with freshly baked bread buns. The final offering was a platter of various almond and praline chocolate sweets...this was the end, finished off with a hot straight from the oven Magdalene cake which the restaurant is renowned for. I was fit to burst but knew we had a bit of a walk back to the car, so could walk off all the food we had eaten. Just as we were about to get up to pay the bill, the owner's wife came with some more food, what looked like small cuts of cake but promptly took them to pack them for us to take with us...phew! All in all, this restaurant provided excellent, very tasty food that I would definitely eat again Some of of the dishes were typically French so was an added bonus! The service too was excellent!"
