"La Charbonnière is a farm on the side of a mountain overlooking the Chateau de Menthon St. Bernard. It serves traditional Haute-Savoyard food based on cheese such as fondue, raclette and tartiflette. Its major attraction is that while one eats one can see the cows just underneath in their winter quarters. The whole place is very simple and smells of cheese. and cows. One sits at long tables on benches and the atmosphere is very convivial. Bottles of wine are placed on the tables and one pays for whatever one consumes. The food is simple but delicious - however it is heavy so not recommended on a hot day. The restaurant also sells home-made cheese of different varieties. This place is an absolute must for a genuine alpine experience."

a real tasty, real local hit with cheese from the farm, good service and beautiful to be the only English-speaking guests.

A real treat, genuine local racket with cheese from the farm, good service and nice to be the only English speaking guests.

Super neat that where you eat overlooks the cow pens. With that proximity comes the smell of cows. All food comes from their farm, including the fruit you get at the end of the meal.

the quality of the food I found really good. especially cheese is very tasty and locally produced genepi. wein is typical of savoie. service and atmosphere is really great! they should be ready to change their clothes when they are back to home, or somewhere else...after it is a farm: we enjoyed it very much. we celebrated the 85th birthday of my mother (a group of 10) first felt cold, but we were the first to arrive. Once more customers arrived and the place began to fill, we felt very comfortable. we tried the fondue (excellent,) the...raclette and the diots. everyone thought that eating was great. the service was very friendly and attentive. great! I recommend to experience something else in this farm/restaurant.

The food is usually good, except when they bring you the worst of the fruit and the leftover ends of cheese because you're the foreigners. There is one older woman who has been rude without exception, not just ignoring us, but being actively rude and telling us that the scraps of cheese left on the cheese plate are all that's left when we can see that other tables are much better served. To be honest, we just can't bear to go there any more, even though our visitors tend to enjoy the dinner over the cow stall farm atmosphere.

This is a Savoyard restaurant, basic but excellent, situated above a cowshed with views (through glass) down to the moo's below. A good earthy smell, simple long tables and wooden benches, local cheese dishes (fondue, raclette, tartiflette). with ham and saucisson, and wine which is paid for according to how much of the bottle you drink. Best in winter after a day's skiing as there is a vast amount to eat. A cheap and cheerful restaurant near the Chateau de Menthon St. Bernard. Perfect for groups but also couples and your dog is welcome too ! I love it.

this is essentially a working viehhof with a very intelligent restaurant, which is literally attached to the first floor of the large fully functional skid house! we arrived around 19 o'clock without other guests and asked ourselves what we had admitted. we left a full-fledged restaurant several hours later enjoyed several courses of French meat, cheese, brot, kartoffeln, eis, coffee and dishes to finish. we wandered around the area of view before the meal to look down where the cows are fed and milked and wander around the back of the farm to find a shed of young calves, much to the joy of our grandchildren who could feed them. (wash the hands before they had eaten in the ugly washrooms, ha...

"As I entered the Bistrot I was a wee bit disappointed with the reception from the young woman in glasses who had to work hard to give us a half smile. Nothing bothers me more than being led to a table that is not as nice as the empty tables and being seated. I said to her in French we would prefer to sit at the railing tables over the lake. She told us that she was sorry but they were all reserved. Now...I had made a reservation in the Spring for the first night at the bistrot and the second night at the restaurant gastronomique. As we did not really use the table to drink or eat for a few minutes, we were not aware until she brought a bottle of badoit that it rocked badly.Truly unacceptable. When I pointed it out...she went to get a piece of 'something' to equal it out. She was not doing very well trying to even the table when a young man...obviously the head waiter started to really work on the table.I stopped him and I told him that actually...we would prefer to sit at the 'still' empty tables looking over the lake that were..'reserved' ! He said 'Bien sur' and told the glaring waitress to put us at one of the tables that she had said were reserved. This is not how I expected to be treated when you are spending 500 euros a night for your room and ove 500 euros for the Michelin restaurant. The young man was a very good waiter with suggestions and such but it was clear that he was overwhelmed as it seemed the unfriendly waitress was the only one working. There were plenty of busboys at least. The view of the lake is nice but it is over the public beach so that there were a few people right below us who were making loud conversation and at that moment...I wish I wasn't fluent in French like my husband as he could ignore the silly conversation below. But...the food was very good. I had the specialty for that evening which was a 'poulet f'ermier. It was delicious as was the the 1st course for two...a lovely charcuterie for two. We skipped the cheese as we wanted to really enjoy that for the next night and... since the dessert menu had pretty standard fare....we opted for trois boules de glaces avec chantilly'. Very good but not exactly special. We would have enjoyed the experience much more if it hadn't been for the first few minutes. If not for that...we would have given it 4 stars. By the way...the 'reserved tables' were still empty when we left...actually ...the restaurant was half empty. I wish we had gone into Annecy for this first evening and just dined at the Michelin starred restaurant the following night."
