"So, this is a famous one among the Indian restaurants in Hamburg as they own an Indian store as well just attached to the restaurant. I have been here 3 times so far and the most recent experience was the best in terms of food, not that earlier ones were bad! :)So you can actually expect to have some good Indian food here. I know its a major issue for anyone looking for Indian food abroad (or for any cuisine outside its home country for that matter!), as many places will not serve the taste people look for when they crave for Indian restaurant food. The proof I got last time when we tried 'chole bhature' and the taste was just wow! We also had vegetarian thali which was great too, it had a paneer dish (cheese), a daal, a simple vegetarian curry, raita (salty yogurt mix), naan and rice so it actually had everything that a normal vegetarian person would order if not having thali, so I think the thali here is a very good and reasonable option. On earlier occasions I tried dosa, pakoras, daal and chilli paneer, not that all were excellent but good enough. Now coming to the not so good part which is the service here, well its simply below average. Probably that is the reason why it's not crowded even though the taste is great. Looks like all waiters don't know much about Indian food, they are not at all welcoming or enthusiastic and at end of the meal I am always in that moment of dilemma where we don't want to tip the waiter because he didn't do anything to deserve that but then we have to tip just to honour the chef's efforts! I am a pure vegetarian and once when we went here in a group, I was about to eat non-vegetarian pakoras because the waitress who was serving us didn't care to check if they are actually vegetarian pakoras, we literally asked her 4-5 times to confirm if they were veg and every time she nodded with a yes, but guess what they were actually not veg and she didn't even bother to say a sorry. This place has great potential I feel but either they have to train their waiters or change their waiters!"

The food has taste of home made food. Spices were perfect and good variety of sauces to go with your starters.

This is the place for Asian Food at a reasonable price in Hamburg. Just 5 minutes from the main train station. A relatively large restaurant with...

despite the slower and often inexperienced service (sometimes someone new comes in) they make excellent southern and northern variations of Indian cuisine. the price is not above average, but it is not the cheapest. tasted jalfrezi, madras, vindaloo, tarkadaal, bryani and super. like all restaurants, they have a “day menu” at a cheaper price. I went there several times, and there was always some well done meal, but the way they treated you and your needs not offering the menu, not cleaning the table, serving warm Indian wine, because verything else was out or not available with total indifference. Thus, after three efforts, I´m deciding that this is how it is meant, so I´ll try something else.

We had been looking for a good Indian restaurant in Hamburg for a while and finally found the Dostana! The food is excellent and reasonably priced. As the restaurant is fairly modern and shows Indian films and music on the television, those who require the usual exaggerated "Indian" decor may not like it, but we go for the excellent food and the friendly service.

This place is all about food. Its not where one would take a spouse for example to a romantic restaurant but a place you both go to for experiencing good Indian food. It has a good mix, including south Indian dosa and lots of other northern dishes. Service is great and overall the prices are good. Like I said, not cosy, a bit cantine'ish but great food. Highly recommended for Indian food lovers. Ver carta

I ate here a couple of times during my visit as it was handy for my hotel and on a square with several other bars/restaurants. I was looking for a fairly quick meal and both times opted for the Thali, once chicken and once lamb. This was delivered on a platter split into compartments and had chicken or lamb curry, dall (lentils), salad, yoghurt, rice and two flatbreads. The curries and dall were all very tasty and all was excellent value at around EU9. Service was quick and unfussy. The restaurant itself is fairly basic but don't let that put you off.

it was the second culinary long-haul flight this month. After a high flight in the eimsbüttlerer mazza, the 14th march went to the dostana at the hansaplatz. They had invited designated indienkenners who had lived and eaten five years in new delhi and cooked themselves wonderfully indian. the restaurant is actually more a bite in which you can sit. simple tables and chairs, the image of a dancing Indian maid on the wall and bollywood flickering in big TV. the greeting by the only waiter and barmann in personal union did not make the best, the communication was from the beginning difficult on the ground rudimentary language skills. they may also have led to the fact that the order has not bee...

"There's always a question (in my mind, anyway) as to Michelin's accuracy/usefulness outside of France. In the US, it's not very helpful at all and in Europe ex-France, I've found it hit and miss. Haerlin represented only my second stab at a two-star in Germany and the first meal (Heinz Winkler), while a thoroughly wonderful overall experience, felt like the second star might have been a stretch. Not so at Haerlin, this was a two-star meal that stands fork-to-fork with any I can remember. The food is stylized to within an inch of its life, but close to flawless in both conception and execution. Outside of a large selection of generally unremarkable breads and a luke-warm roasted onion broth added to an amuse at table side that probably should have been hotter, the meal was simply one perfect dish after another. Maybe the sorbet intermezzo was a little old school in such a fashion forward meal, but - hey - it was delicious! Keep it.The room is suitably formal, luxurious in a traditional style, and quite comfortable. The pace of service might be a little leisurely for some (I ate alone and the four-course menu (seven + courses, including amuses, etc) pushed it a bit, stretching just over three hours. However, the friendly and attentive staff kept an eye out the entire time and stopped by if the time between courses presented the opportunity. The somm, in particular, was a great diversion, visiting from time to time to discuss the varied and interesting wines on offer. He provided useful insight into the outstanding selection of trocken Rieslings on the list. He guided me to a 2001 Burklin-Wolf GG that, at Eu 150, was both a great bottle of mature white and a tremendous value for a wine of this quality in this type of restaurant. (Good luck finding a white burgundy of this quality at this price at any multi-star restaurant - or at retail, for that matter.) He also suggested a wonderful German Pinot Noir by the glass that worked perfectly with the meat course and wasn't terribly expensive. The list is extensive, but not the tome you see at some restaurants, but don't be fooled - wine service at Haerlin is both a major plus and represents notable value in the context of multi-star restaurants.I'm not going to argue two-star vs three-star because that distinction often seems to be kind of mysterious (and tangentially related to the food), but I will say that this place certainly deserves two stars. I had just a flat-out great meal. If you can work in a visit, Haerlin should be high on your list."
