"Hiking up from the city of St.Gallen my colleague and me felt like a snack, when we arrived at Waldegg (983m asl) and before continuing on the well known 'Eggweg ' hike. We had just crossed the invisible cantonal border and were now in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. The Waldegg is a popular excursion point, mainly for its great views of the Alpstein mountain range, which was hidden by clouds, when we were there. There is a big terrace with outdoor seating, but we preferred to sit inside in the 'heimelige ' (cozy) interior with lots of wood, with a green tiled stove and with cow bells as decoration. My friend and me first ordered from a friendly German waiter a 'Saft ' as in Northeastern Switzerland a cider is called. In other parts of Switzerland it is known as a 'Suure Most '. To eat we went for a local speciality: Appenzeller Pantli, a sausage for raw consumption, that is an IGP trademark (Indication géographique protégée). To an outsider it might look like a rectangular salami, just as two similar Swiss sausages: 'Landjäger ' and 'Salsiz ' from the Grisons, which have also been put into a mould during preparation. The difference is in the ingredients and the preparation. Very typical for the Appenzeller Pantli is its garlic taste, but there is also pepper in it. Its shape comes from being stacked into a press box before being sundried and cold smoked. At the restaurant Waldegg it was cut-up lengthwise, which I have never seen before, and it was then nicely served on a wooden board, together with pickles and dark bread. We enjoyed that 'Zvieri ', as in this part of the world an afternoon snack is called."

"The two of us had dinner today. Very friendly service and uncomplicated. Starter of smoked salmon with asparagus salad was really good. Very beautifully presented and draped with skill. You can tell that the kitchen works with dedication. Then the pork cordon bleu: HAMMER!!! As soon as it was served, the fine scent of the menu wafted through your nose. Here too, beautifully served with a slice of lemon and some chives. The cordon bleu had a golden yellow and crispy breading. The size was ok and enough. The cheese has a very delicate taste, reminds you a bit of mountain cheese. Enough filling. The meat itself was thinly pounded as it should be and tender. Ev. Kidney piece? Very little fat on the meat. Various vegetables as a side dish. The vegetables had a good taste and were nicely rounded off with garlic. Fries were fine cut and crispy without being dry. The color of the fries is also very good. A very good french fry seasoning is used. The whole thing was hot-seared and made with fresh, excellent raw materials. The host couple (kitchen) also knows how to turn a cordon bleu on the menu into something special. BRAVO!!! We eat a lot of cordon bleus all over CH......In Leuen in Rickenbach we have found a new favorite! TOP price at 34 francs for the great meat, various vegetables and very fine fries, more than fair!! We'll come back and try more creations. Kind regards from Rickenbach. And no, we live in the same community as the Löwen, but we have no relationship at all with the owners or with the restaurant. So the rating is real and another TIP to the host couple: Beer topic......Why Feldschlösschen???? Why? We have listed many regional ingredient retailers on the menu card...WHY not beer too??? I don't quite understand that... There are beers on Gunzwil soil that would suit your standards much better!! Think about it... Greetings and see you soon... and again: Great job!!!"
