Fiume - Carta

One of my favourite restaurants. Great food and great service.

Superb food with exceptional service and reasonably priced. Sat outside was a little fresh but with stunning river views heater and blankets we loved it!!! Don’t know why I’m writing this review as I rather want to keep it a secret! A new favourite!

The outdoor seating area is very cramped, making it difficult to find space for the food or the waitstaff. Our table was unsteady, which made it challenging to keep our wine from spilling. We had to wait a while to place our order, as the kitchen was understandably busy on a Friday night.

Overall we liked the atmosphere and the service was friendly. A nice touch would be for server to come around and ask if everything is ok or if there was anything that we need. We had to request salt and pepper and there was no offer of any parmesan for Italian dishes which is typical in other Italian eateries. Overall we had a good meal and evening out and would go back. We’ve been to Fiume loads over the years but this time was very disappointing. Service was slow and surly, needing prompting it took an hour to get our starters and nearly 2hrs before mains arrived. Starters (red prawn carpaccio, porchetta and bruschetta) were good. Mains less so. The crab linguine was sloppy, almost like Chinese crabmeat and sweetcorn soup, and bland. The lamb ragu was good. We didn’t linger for pudding, given the time. Bill excluding wine was £280 for 5 excluding wine, which is punchy for a salad and bowl of pasta. It’s a shame has been our go to local Italian for a while but perhaps just suffering with staffing issues post Covid.

I called the manager to express our concerns and let him know we weren’t looking for a discount, we just wanted to enjoy the rest of our meal. He assured us he would take care of it, but it was clear he wasn’t really listening. I even had to ask for toilet paper twice in the restroom, and they only offered us blue roll. When we wanted to order desserts and tea or coffee, no one came to our table. After waiting for 30 minutes, we finally asked for the bill, only to receive the wrong one. It was an absolute disaster. Having run restaurants myself, I understand how busy it can get, but instead of cramming more customers in, I would recommend limiting bookings to ensure the existing diners c...

When I expressed that I didn't think a 15% service charge was appropriate for a starter and a main course that were just thrown on the table in front of us, we were met with indifference. The server claimed, “service is for every member of the staff,” despite the fact that only one waiter was present, and he treated us poorly. He then went to speak to the manager but didn’t even seem to notice where he dropped the new bill that no longer included the service charge. If he had shown some understanding or offered an apology, I might have been willing to pay the service fee, but he didn’t seem to care at all. We weren't the only table dissatisfied with the service; many others shared our frust... Ver carta
