"Spieker is the most authentic Ammerländer restaurant housed within an old multi story farm house directly by the lake in the pretty town of Bad Zwischenahn. From the moment you step through the medieval entrance door you realise you are about to be transformed back...into another time. We sat upstairs and sampled the famous smoked eel served whole. Each eel has a tag showing where it was smoked and the price which is based on weight. You simply retain the tag for your bill and remove the head and skin (there is the correct way your waiter will show you, in my case my local friends did) and start enjoying the rich smokey flavour. As eel is quite oily and you eat with your hands you end up with pretty well oiled hands as slippery as the eel ones was. Your waiter will let you wash your hands under a stream of schnapps. The schnapps is also consumed from a pewter spoon so not all was wasted. Of course the restaurant offers many other dishes and has a great selection of beer, wine and the so important schnapps. It is best to book as this place is hopping. 5 stars from me for such a unique experience not to be missed."
