"Last month, whilst staying at an excellent B B in the nearby village of Muker, my wife and I had dinner on the last night of our holiday (21.10.16) at the Kearton Country Hotel in Thwaite. With high expectations of a particularly enjoyable meal and a quality experience generally, we gathered, as is required by the Hotel, with the other diners in one of the lounges at 6.30 p.m. to study the menu and place our order over pre dinner drinks. The lounge we sat in was poorly appointed and rather unpleasant, which did not bode well. Unfortunately this extended to our meal which was spoilt by my wife being served a dish of an extremely poor piece of cod, which was partly inedible, and we suspected after dissecting it not cod at all. Nevertheless not wishing to make a fuss my wife soldiered on with it but in the end we felt we had to complain to the waiter and did so. After apparently consulting with the kitchen staff he did his best to assure us the fish was cod but nothing was offered to replace it...For my main course I choose grouse, which I love and have eaten a large number of over many years. The taste of roast grouse is normally instantly recognisable as most people who eat them know, but unfortunately the one I was served was almost tasteless and if I have been blindfolded I would not have known what type of bird it was... nevertheless I ate it and did not complain, as I felt there was no point in doing so.My wife and I finished our meal with ice cream and left without coffee, but nevertheless gave the waiter the usual 10% tip as we felt that he was not to blame for what he had served us and he had been perfectly pleasant. As we had such a poor meal we shall not return to the Hotel."

Paul and Wendy are excellent hosts. Meals were included and the atmosphere in the lounge lends itself to relaxed conversation with the other guests. Would recommend and return.

We stopped here for coffee on our way to Keld. A lovely little tea room, we had crumpets with jam which were great, and the waitress checked if they were vegan for us before we ordered anything. She was very helpful.

After a very tough day on the Pennine Way we called it quits over a pot of tea and delicious scones with jam and cream. It was heavenly. The rain could drizzle outside but inside our cheeks glowed as the friendly staff attended to our needs. Even had plastic covers to slip over our muddy boots. Perfect! Ver carta

We stopped over for drinks one lunchtime walking between Hardraw and Tan Hill on the Pennine Way. It was nice to sit outside at the front of the hotel and watch the world go by. Good quality beer at very reasonable prices. The barman brought our beer to our outside table which was a nice touch. Well worth a visit

We were out admiring the countryside when we came across this small country hotel,we went into their tearoom for lunch,it was set out in a 80s style, the staff were friendly and helpful the views are out standing, the menu was varied and typical tearoom ranging from sandwiches to baguettes to full blown lunches,it is ideal for walkers and it would be great to sit outside when warm, will call again when passing.

Having walked around Gunnerside we wanted a nice bowl of thick soup and a soft drink without going over into Hawes. The Kearton Country Hotel and Restaurant, in the tiny hamlet of Thwaite, was ideal. Surprisingly large dining area and helpful young Eastern European couple. Rich leek potato soup with a warm crusty wholemeal roll was EXACTLY what the Dr ordered. Would definitely go again and look at the wide ranging menu. Ver carta

We have just returned from yet another visit to this wonderful family run country hotel in the heart of the Yorksshire Dales. It is set in a small hamlet and the hotel is the heart of the community. Small shop 3 miles away. The hotel only has 12 rooms, so very cosy and extremely friendly. The rooms themselves are very clean and comfortable. If you want a few restful days, in wonderful scenery this is the place to be and is a walkers paradise.

The village is tiny and so too looks the hotel, but it belies it's tucked away position backing onto the most beautiful views. Having passed this place initially looking for a tea shop we returned needing a tasty snack for our lunch.Probably my fault that my expectations were high when I ordered the panini with the hot beef and onion relish...not too long to wait and we were served. I should have gone with the ham and cheese like my wife did! When I ask for a beef sandwich in Yorkshire well I expect a slice of the best meat with real flavour.Sorry Kearton, but this was a real sad let down. The slice of pale, limp, anaemic meat would shame a supermarket deli. It was stringy and tasteless and n...

"We had booked with booking.com . On arrival we were told that we didn't get breakfast included and that it would be £15 a head. We accepted this although thought was pretty steep for breakfast in a pub.The first morning we were given a menu clearly stating that breakfasts were included with all accommodation. I ordered poached eggs with smoked salmon and the other two ordered a full English breakfast which included homemade black pudding. The breakfasts arrived ,one of my poached eggs was runny, the other hard. The English breakfasts had no black pudding on the plates and when queried we were told that the deliveries hadn't arrived. Doesn't homemade imply made on or near the premises and as the owner states he is a butcher by trade I would expect he had made the black pudding. No alternatives were offered and presentation was distinctly lacking , with the baked beans poured over the other items. The next day I risked the full breakfast with black pudding which was lovely. But again the others had badly cooked poached eggs. We were offered no fruit juice, cereal or even toast and marmalade. On leaving we discovered the pub was unmanned , despite poor mobile signal. The owner turned up after 15 minutes. The bill was handed over, charging us for seven breakfasts when we had six, it was adjusted after he asked if one of us had had two breakfast one day? He served and cooked them so should know the answer to that. We were also then overcharged for nine coffee when three coffees and two teas had been ordered. Having had a family B and small hotel in York I advised him that standards were not what I was used to. I spoke to someone who had also visited recently and she stated a member of staff had charged them £15 per head for their similar breakfast where we were charged the menu price. Exceptionally poor menu, inaccurate advise saying breakfast included then charging us and probably the worst breakfast I have eaten in similar accommodation."
