"Le Chalet opened up last year and since its initial opening, has added timber cladding to the inside walls to make it appear to be a little piece of the Alps. All seemed well. Unfortunately business has not been exactly brisk at this place since...it opened and we should have heeded the warning signs of empty seats. However, we wanted to give the place a chance and we like to support local restaurants wherever possible. We visited at lunchtime on Saturday. There were just two tables occupied in the front of the place and nobody sitting at the rear. We chose a booth at the rear (all very cosy we thought) and opposite the bar/counter in good sight of the potwash area behind the bar. We chose a simple plate of Pate, Rillettes, Houmous, Salad and Olives (all cold and easy to throw on a plate We ordered two glasses of Sauvignon Blanc and then began the long wait! How long should it take to serve two glasses of wine? I noticed the waitress fussing about behind the bar, first trying to find two glasses and then spending ages, cleaning them with a piece of paper towel. The wine finally arrived some 15 minutes after ordering it and worse still, arrived warm! Room temperature white wine is not pleasant at the best of times. As no cold white wine was forthcoming, I asked them to put some ice cubes in the wine to make it at least drinkable. This all took some time and meanwhile our food was nowhere to be seen. After nearly walking out, I asked how long we would have to wait for our food to be served and the waitress said `not long`. Finally when it did arrive, the milk jug and spoon that were on our table when we first sat down, were still there, even though we had been speaking to the owner at the table and also to two other waitresses. Nobody removed those items until we pointed them out and asked for them to be removed! There were 6 people working at Le Chalet that day. I overheard several waitressses saying that they were so busy! Yes I agree. Busy doing nothing!!! The owner was no better. She started making our food but then disappeared to talk to others, without finishing the job in hand. All this time, the bar we overlooked was piled high in dirty dishes, with nobody taking any notice of them! With a good view of the deli part of the place, I could easily see that they were hardly troubled with loads of customers while we were there. What on earth these six people were doing, is beyond me. At one point I saw 4 waitresses in the pot-wash area, one of them washing up (when she wasn`t on her mobile) and the other three just hiding from doing any work. Meanwhile the dirty dishes and glasses on the bar remained unclean. I also noticed that nobody had cleared any ot the other tables at the back of restaurant. The food was ok but after all, how could it not be? It was only simple, cold items, plonked on a plate. This place needs to up its game considerably if it wants to remain in business. It is quite clear that the owner knows nothing about how to run a successful restaurant or how to train and manage her staff. You have been warned!"

We stumbled upon this place for lunch. Loved it. Done out like a mountain chalet. Rustic. The house platter of home made hummous and pate was superb as were the cured meats. The glass of inexpensive shiraz was excellent too. Don't miss it Ver carta

This restaurant excels in every aspect, from its food to its service. The warm and friendly welcome is in a beautiful and clean location, with tables both by the front window and in the back. It is considered the best in the city. - Jeremy Barbara

The food was delicious, especially the ribs and mushrooms. I enjoyed the rustic decor and found the prices to be very reasonable. The only downside was that the service was a bit slow, even though our order was taken promptly. The restaurant was clean and inviting, with a good variety on the menu. I will definitely be coming back.

we were in a cold day in malton and were looking for something to warm up to set us up for the afernoon. someone suggested that we looked at this place and were worn away on the back of the delicacies. it was slightly chaotic, lightly slow, but all good fun. and when eating arrived, we were both very happy with it. there are no special frills, but we didn't expect any. While house-hunting in Malton, we stumbled upon this newly opened bistro that is only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and during the daytime. The service was excellent and very friendly, and we had a great chat with the French owner. The food was delicious, served quickly and hot. We ordered a bottle of Austrian red wine, but unfortunately it was expired. The waitress promptly informed us and offered a delicious alternative. Overall, we had a fantastic meal and a great start to our dining experience. Our experience was completely different from the negative review by serviceisking.

"The problem began with our arrival. We are 3 adults in our mid-60s and we had already climbed one set of steps to access the bar in the pub. We were escorted to our room up two more flights of narrow stairs. On entering our room, we could smell the damp in the room and discovered mould on walls behind furniture and in the corners of the window frames. We checked the prices of the evening meals on offer and there wasn't enough variety for our party and they were quite expensive. So we decided to eat out. I asked what time the pub closed and was told, when the last customer leaves. I thought that was a bit vague so I said that we would be back at 10-ish. We arrived back just after 10pm to find all entrances to the pub were fully locked up and we were unable to get in. I called the pub and, after a while, my call went to voicemail with a message that there was no one to answer my call. I left a voicemail, this was followed by another message to say that there was no one to respond to my voicemail! My party had got back into the car as it was raining and I drove to the front of the pub and sounded my horn for some time then drove to the back of the pub. At this point, a man appeared saying he had a message to come and let us in so, finally, we got in to the pub to access our room. We had an uncomfortable night but managed to get up for the early breakfast (great breakfast! and check-out. We raised all the damp and mould issues with the man who had let us in and, as one of us was asthmatic, told him that we would be leaving a poor review of the room and that they shouldn't book that room out to any one else until the issues were resolved."
