"Very unassuming space in terms of atmosphere and accoutrements, but the menu is best explained by the head chef. We did not our know our Nyama Choma from our Ogbono soup so she sat with us and explained the specialties of the house that night. She strongly suggested the Poulet Yassa and Mixed grill. All were cooked lovingly to order in huge portions. The Yassa (chicken with onions and lemon sauce) was amazing. Then she said you had to try Jollof rice! Trust me you do! What a great collection of spices. A side order of fried plaintains (we could hear them hit the oil) was amazing and enough to feed two tables! The food is inexpensive, plentiful and great tasting. What more can you ask for? Yes the wine list is sparse (1 red, 1 white) but there were enough other beverage choices there. Definitely a must visit for an experience and great food!"

Probably the best African restaurant in Cardiff. I’ll definitely recommend it. It’s my favourite for Nigerian meals and I’m happy it’s finally here

My husband and I visited Le Mandela recently. It's a very basic no frills establishment but very friendly and the food was plentiful and very very tasty. We will definitely visit again. Ver carta

The food at this restaurant is absolutely delicious, hearty, and comforting. The atmosphere is relaxed and the service is friendly. The taliapa and beef stew were both outstanding. We will definitely return.

We were so pleased we found the Mandela restaurant. We have virtually no experience of African food, but Ulrich was really friendly and helpful and gave us some recommendations. We had one of the best meals we have had in a long time and really felt like we were on holiday. We definitely hope to return. Highly recommended if you want a unique experience away from the big food chains. Ver carta

This was our first experience dining at an African restaurant and the waiter was exceptionally helpful. He went over the entire menu and provided background information on the dishes, and even brought us the beer bottles to select from. The food was incredible and the prices were very affordable! I highly recommend trying their Sadza and the tomato stew. We will definitely be returning soon.

The restaurant has a bright and spacious decor, with friendly and helpful service from the lone server. The food was delicious, although a bit heavy-handed with the pepper, especially on the beef spinach dish. The sadza was outstanding. Unfortunately, La Mandela does not serve hot drinks, which was disappointing as we had to wait 45 minutes for our food without anything to drink. On a chilly day, we didn't have any interest in the cold beverages available.

"It was the most bizarre experience dining here. First when we arrived in the restaurant, our group set up was that there was someone on each end who was sitting facing an empty chair on the other side of the table. Upon enquiry we understood it was a covid measure, however never had any other restaurants requesting such seating arrangements in the past 20 months. We ordered two split pots, a non-spicy broth for one side of the pot and a spicy broth for the other side. The staff came to confirm that we wanted spicy/non-spicy in each pot. Yes, we said. To our shock when the pots came, one pot was spicy/spicy on both side, and the other was non-spicy/non-spicy on both sides. This was after the staff had came by to confirm that we wanted a spicy/non-spicy set-up, and in the usual situation a person wanting a spicy broth would not have asked for a split pot. We raised this to the staff and were clearly unhappy about it, though did not insist on having the broths changed around. What happened next made it the most awkward and uncomfortable dining experience ever. From where we were sitting, we could hear the owner reprimanding the staff for the error, throughout our meal. We understand mistakes occur and if the owner was unhappy about the mistake and genuinely wanted to apologise, taking the initiative to change the broth to the right setup, or a complimentary drink or dish would have gone a long way. But no, he chose to reprimand the staff within our hearing for the whole dinner (which didn't help the situation one bit and made the experience worse! . We felt sorry for the staff. Even with the hospitality shortage, that was a completely wrong way to help the staff improve, nor help retain them in the long run. I don't remember anything about the food, although photos did show a good range to choose from. At the end of the meal we each received a box of hello panda, which might have helped, if not for the fact they were expired. All in all, would not recommend."
