"2 of us popped in for a cuppa and brunch. ordered 2 pots of tea, 1 scramble egg and salmon, 1 scramble egg and avocado. Welcome was cool although seemed annoyed we had no reservation but there were tables available. Service was ok, place was noisy and busy (assumed this was a good sign) . tea served in pots with china cups and saucers, nice touch food took a while, and was disappointing, 2 slices of cheap sliced bread toasted, spoon full of scramble which was over cooked and browned. my friend had small amount of avocado and my salmon was slimy and i think cheap. We are not big eaters so didnt mind small portion, hence we didnt order full breakfasts. i would not have written a poor review, however, the Final bill £28.30?! When i checked the bill i had been charged for 2 x £4.15 avocado on toast, and 2 x £1.20 egg, 1 x smoked salmon £5.50, 1 x scramble egg £6.90 I queried this which was dealt with loudly and embarrassingly. Basically they would not accept their mistake but when the waitress asked 'would you like 2 slices or 1)? This doubles the price of your whole dish! Beware! I suggested people should be warned when ordering that your dish price will go from £4.15 to £8.30 for the extra slice! clearly a mistake but was told this is due to the cost of living going up, by an impolite antipodean lady. Since when did 1 slice of toast cost £4.15! I am really cross with myself that i paid the bill as it was with hindsight, and definitely would not return here when Sudbury has so many lovely cafe 's for brunch, we eat out a lot and happy to pay the going rate but this was ridiculous pricing. I would hope the proprietor will review this and the receipt attached in photos and at least admit a mistake was made"

Always have a good experience at Painters. Staff are always friendly and nothing is too much and the food is always excellent and tastes fresh Quite possibly the best what’s royal I’ve ever had!

Friendly atmosphere in a lovely old building with lots of space with a French feel. Eclectic mix of furnishings from big leather sofas to small oak tables. Staff are fab, dogs accepted and the food of high quality and great value. Outstanding

Had a very nice breakfast here with colleagues on the way to a funeral. The food was beautifully done and the waitress was very helpful (not sure if her name but I think she had a South African accent). Lovely surroundings and cute tea cosy on the teapots! Ver carta

High tea, 2 vegans, 2 non-vegans. What a lovely spread, well thought out and no token gestures for the vegan menu. Decent pot of tea and lovely friendly service. We have breakfast at Painters sometimes so this was a new experience, equally as high a standard as the breakfasts!

We went to Painters on Saturday with family for brunch and had a really lovely time. Great choice of food on the menu, which was all brought to us at the same time and lovely and hot. Staff were very friendly and helpful and we all so enjoyed the ambiance of the venue and had a really good time.

We visited Painters as a family of 12 for a post-Xmas gathering and it was the perfect venue. They were so accommodating of such a big group and didn’t make us feel like we were an inconvenience at all despite the fact we took up so much space and must had made for a tricky time in the kitchen The food was delicious, all coming out hot, correct and perfectly cooked. The staff were welcoming, warm and friendly and the atmosphere was lovely. Highly recommend Ver carta

A victim of its success. 3 of the past 3 times I 've visited have been disappointing. Last time we booked and were given a tiny table despite the cafe not being fully booked. We indicated that we 'd like a bigger table, to no avail. Prices are very high for very basic options... for instance, what is basically a side salad is nearly £5 and then toppings are an extra several £s and there isn 't even a salad dressing or anything special about it. The last time we visited I chose a tuna sandwich, which was delivered with a long blonde hair on it. I didnt want to embarrass the waitress so just picked it off. However, when the owner took out payment I thought I 'd just mention it quietly but no o...

Absolutely fantastic experience with Painters at the Angel where Tracey, Alan and the whole crew managed to help us have the most perfect wedding! From the beginning, Tracy was incredibly helpful and supported us in putting together a fantastic day. We started with a delicious brunch with our guests which included a selection of bacon and sausage sandwiches followed by some mini quiches. When the rest of our party came, we had drinks on arrival where the team were very attentive and caring towards our guests. Finally, the most talked about aspect of our wedding, the grazing table! I cannot explain how beautiful and mouth watering this table looked. The food was fresh, locally sourced and ver...

"I hope we were just unlucky, and I feel sad writing this, but it wasn't the best experience this weekend. We stayed overnight and had the tasting menu. The Creppy family are departed a while now, and the staff such as Henri that stayed on are long gone, they set unbelievably high standards which were always going to be hard to meet. We loved the room we stayed in, but the rest of the experience was a bit awkward. I feel sorry for them as it was super hot and it must be difficult to get staff at the moment, but when you have paid £500 for one night and food inc wine then things can be a bit disappointing. From the start we could tell that they were under the cosh, the manager was sick, and we were told repeatedly how busy they were tonight. We asked to eat 30 mins later than booked which they said would help. We ordered a half bottle of champagne but had to wait about 15 minutes as the fridge was broken at it would not be cold. It arrived and wasn't cold enough really, then after 10 minutes in the ice bucket it was. Simultaneously other guests were told the coffee machine was also broken. A bit of a shame as we were celebrating a birthday and it sort of spoiled the moment waiting for a drink. Then ordered a 2014 Pomerol which to be honest I found really rather average, but that is the luck of the draw. The food was quite good, but only one course impressed us, the trout was good. The staff seem very downbeat to the point of it being awkward, one told us and another table to make as much mess as we like as it was her last shift. Others seemed very awkward and lacking confidence/a smile. Again, hard to get quality staff at the moment, but there seemed to be a lack of pride/confidence in what is being delivered. I also asked for cheese to finish off, in the past they had a glorious cheese cart with a huge selection of great cheeses. I accept maybe it was too hot for this, but I was simply given a plate of three cheeses, no one asked me if I would like to choose anything or for example do I like blue cheese. Then when it was delivered my wife tried one of them, liked it so asked what it was, and they didn't know what the cheese was which is probably not what they aspire to. makes me sad as the cheese at the Great House is stuff of legend. More minor stuff: Breakfast wise the coffee in the percolator was way too strong even for someone who likes strong coffee, a tiny shot of milk was not enough so we asked for more, would have been nice to be offered hot milk to make Cafe Au Lait etc. Also another minor point, the soap and shower gels were quite horrible, they stick to you and don't wash off, not something I'm usually bothered about, but the half empty containers looked like they had be refilled with something not very nice, or it was just never very good. When we checked out I think the manager may have been back, he did not ask us once how our stay had been so we had no real chance to say anything. We tried to be understanding and of course being British nothing was really a problem for us, but when you've spent £500 for a birthday it was all a bit disappointing and not nearly up to par. I sympathise that it might have been a difficult night, but to be honest it would have come off better if I hadn't been reminded every few minutes that they were so busy and everything going wrong. I'm not even sure that they were that busy, the terrace was out of bounds and the restaurant was 3/4 full. Matters were drawn in to focus the next day when we went to the Weavers Spa, and also for lunch at the Crown in Stoke by Nayland, staff were cheerful, helpful and great at both of these local places. Sorry for writing this negative review which I feel sad to have written about a place we used to love. Rooms: 4 Service: 2 Location: 4"
