"This was our first visit to the Pettigrew Tea Rooms. We had a gift of a voucher for Afternoon Tea for Two. What a brilliant gift that was! We couldn't fault anything! Service was prompt and friendly, The menu was explained, on how to choose which sandwiches we would like, although the printed menu was quite clear, choose any four sandwich fillings and which bread you would like, choose fruit, or plain scones and which drink we would like. Later, we were asked to choose which cake we would like. We were also asked if we had any allergies that they should be aware of. The sandwiches were well filled and delicious, The scones were still warm and went down well with the clotted cream and jam and berries. There were also Petit Fours and shortbread biscuits to round that course off. We chose Darjeeling tea as our drink, as it is a favourite of ours and it came freshly brewed in two pots, which held enough for 3 cups each. We prefer our tea without milk, so those that have milk, would likely get 4 cups each. We both chose the option of a glass of Cava £7.50 PP). A nice start to the occasion. All this was followed by Cake. We were full, but it had to be done Lemon Drizzle for me and Coffee Mocha Cake for my wife. Ohhh, they were really, really nice. With each serving we were asked if our food was OK Yes it was! Having read the poor reviews, I find it difficult to equate their experience with ours. It's like others had visited a different tea room! Loads of tea leaves in the pot too! Well done Pettigrew Tea Rooms, will will return!"

The weakest and worst coffee I've ever tasted. Took it back, they added an espresso on top of it, yet it made no difference! Weak, bad taste. Never again.

This tea shop is located next to Cardiff Castle, so it attracts a lot of tourists. However, the cakes and lunch items are incredibly delicious, and the staff are great even when it's busy. The takeout window is perfect for enjoying a snack in the park behind the shop.

Having read previous reviews, decided to take family members for afternoon tea. We were told they didn't do afternoon tea after 3:00, so settled for scones cup of tea instead. The new people do not understand how to make tea. We counted 3 tea leaves in the pot. Asked for some more leaves to be in and was told, you need to give to more time. Half an hour later, cold weak tea did not improve !! I'm 69 years old and have never been given such dishwater. The scones were lovely.

I have recommended this place to so many people over the years. Todays visit was awful. The table appeared grubby with tea stains, when the tea was brought-cheap tea bags now rather than loose leaf despite the misleading tea strainer still sitting in the cup. No milk provided, had to go downstairs and request it. The sandwiches were revolting, the chicken so hard it was sliding out of the unpleasant bread. To be fair the scone was delicious but not enough cream or jam provided for 3 people. The most random selection of “sweet bites” on the top tray tier. At no time were we asked if everything was ok. Almost £70 for terrible food service. Never again, we could not wait to leave.

4 May 2019 Wow am I stuffed. An afternoon tea for 1 can go for 3 people. I came here on an empty stomach and so stuffed. I had to pack up the rest to eat later. Clearly not had many afternoon teas in my life. I enjoyed the Vegan Afternoon which came with 1 slice of mango vanilla cake, 1 scone with vegan margarine jam, 1 sandwich of cucumber sourcream the other cheese tomato and a half shot latte with oat milk. They have a selection of 2 vegan cakes, 2vegan fruit or plain scones 4 vegan sandwiches. I strongly recommend this place. It can get very busy as it seems to be very popular. Perhaps book a place. The staff were friendly too, though looked a little stressed, perhaps as it can be busy....

This used to be my favorite spot for afternoon tea. The food was great and worth the money. However, to be straightforward, I will never go back again. The food was okay, but the bread in our sandwiches was cold and hard. The crusts were difficult to eat. The tea had very few tea leaves (5 leaves as if the teapot hadn't been cleaned) and the cutlery was dirty. The cream and jam for the scones came in a small pot for three people, so we had to go back downstairs to get more. Additionally, the tea did not come with milk, so we had to go downstairs again. The food wasn't as good as it used to be, and the customer service was disappointing. Overall, a huge disappointment and I would not return....

The afternoon tea at this restaurant was quite disappointing and did not offer good value for the money. At £45 per person, we were expecting high quality food and service, but unfortunately, we did not receive either. The chef was apparently sick and there was no acknowledgment of how this would impact our experience. Unlike most places that offer refills of tea, we were expected to pay extra for more than two small cup fills. Additionally, the package was supposed to include a sweet bauble and a slice of cake to take home, but there were no baubles left and only three slices of cake for four people. Instead, we were given two Welsh cakes each, which appeared to be past their 'use by' date....

"It was the most bizarre experience dining here. First when we arrived in the restaurant, our group set up was that there was someone on each end who was sitting facing an empty chair on the other side of the table. Upon enquiry we understood it was a covid measure, however never had any other restaurants requesting such seating arrangements in the past 20 months. We ordered two split pots, a non-spicy broth for one side of the pot and a spicy broth for the other side. The staff came to confirm that we wanted spicy/non-spicy in each pot. Yes, we said. To our shock when the pots came, one pot was spicy/spicy on both side, and the other was non-spicy/non-spicy on both sides. This was after the staff had came by to confirm that we wanted a spicy/non-spicy set-up, and in the usual situation a person wanting a spicy broth would not have asked for a split pot. We raised this to the staff and were clearly unhappy about it, though did not insist on having the broths changed around. What happened next made it the most awkward and uncomfortable dining experience ever. From where we were sitting, we could hear the owner reprimanding the staff for the error, throughout our meal. We understand mistakes occur and if the owner was unhappy about the mistake and genuinely wanted to apologise, taking the initiative to change the broth to the right setup, or a complimentary drink or dish would have gone a long way. But no, he chose to reprimand the staff within our hearing for the whole dinner (which didn't help the situation one bit and made the experience worse! . We felt sorry for the staff. Even with the hospitality shortage, that was a completely wrong way to help the staff improve, nor help retain them in the long run. I don't remember anything about the food, although photos did show a good range to choose from. At the end of the meal we each received a box of hello panda, which might have helped, if not for the fact they were expired. All in all, would not recommend."
