"I wasn’t sure what to expect from our holiday at the Portsonachan hotel as the reviews were so mixed. We enjoyed our stay, it was good but it could easily be great. We stayed in a 2 bedroom lodge with a hot tub Pros Lodge was spacious and we loved the upside down layout Hot tub was lovely and hot The food in the restaurant is of a good standard The breakfast hamper was nicely stocked and was delivered to our door Most of the staff we encountered tried really hard Views are breathtaking Cons The lodge was looking tired in places The kitchen was not well stocked, missing items, only 2 tea spoons and 1 coffee mug in a lodge designed for up to 6 people Our lodge smelt of cigarettes (I’m a non smoker and quite sensitive to it) With the exception of the lounge common areas in the hotel were starting to look tired Waiting on staff in the restaurant were over worked and some errors were made with ordering I’m not going to hold the brown tinted water against the hotel as we were notified of that and bottled drinking water was provided. Showering is a little off putting if you aren’t used to it So overall a mixed picture, we enjoyed our stay but probably wouldn’t visit again. This place was at the upper end of the nightly rate that we would normally pay but didn’t quite have the attention to detail that you might expect. 4 review as we liked it but could easily have loved it"

Eaten here several times and the food and staff were both lovely, the location is absolutely breathtaking…… This is a quirky place that won’t be for everyone but we liked it.

A great location with easy parking and the potential to be a marvellous place to stay. However they are patently short of staff and I was not pleased to be able to hear the chefs talking and arguing while I waited for my food.... Rooms: Comfortable and well appointed Food drinks: Great food once it arrived! Rooms: 4 Service: 3 Ver carta

Oh, what a shame! Such a super location. Though the service was friendly enough we suffered a starvation lunch with an inedible pizza for £13.50 saved only by sharing a bowl of great chips. We did complain and received an understanding and knowing smile but no refund given. Dirty tables and collapsed ceilings in the toilet not confidence inspiring. Expensive, too: £26 for pizza, chips, slaw, soft drink and half a pint somewhat steep. This could be a lovely place with just a little more care and probably some cash, too. Hope it makes it as we need services in these remote locations. Good luck! Ver carta

We had a short stay at Portsonachan Hotel, I was wary from some of the other reviews, but, honestly the place is stunning, yes, 'she ' is a old Coaching Hotel, but, my goodness it is worth a visit. I must say with one review said 'food was deep fat fried '...I have to strongly disagree, we ate both nights, one night in the lovely bar and the second in the main Restaurant...Food was delicious !!! Staff are very welcoming and we had the pleasure of meeting the Owners, who are also Dog lovers, we took our mad dog and he just loved the long walks and was very welcome to join us when we were dining...will definitely be returning and soon !!

My wife and I had dinner here one evening during our visit to Loch Awe, and also lunch on a couple of occasions. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, especially the young Scottish guy, the Australian girl, and our waitress at dinner apologies for not knowing your names, but thanks for the great service we received. As for the food, we couldn’t fault it at all. The dinner we had was one of the best meals we have eaten in any restaurant. My wife ordered the Balmoral Chicken, and I had the Sea Bass. I forget what we had to start, but both courses were delicious. As was the Panna Cotta I had for dessert. The food was piping hot and we weren’t left waiting for ages between the generous cour...

"On our last day here, killing time before the ferry, decided to try luncheon here. No expectations either way. And we were TOTALLY wowed it was just excellent. Trying not to put too many superlatives in this review, but it was really, really ace. We had a lovely table by the window overlooking the harbour where you could see dog walkers, children in wellies, crabbing, and little boats coming and going. Classic Islay. Then I have to mention the food. Jeez, it was top notch, and huuuuuuuge portions. I don’t think we’ve ever had four such consistently generous and fulfilling portions before. We had the scallops (massive, juicy, plentiful , the Crofter’s Platter, which was cheeses, hams, sausage rolls, salad, bread, chutneys; the soup massive bowl, loadsa crispy sourdough bread, and the fish and chips which was so big it draped over the plate! All delicious. Our guy, Andrew, was superb, so attentive and smiley and always bringing us more things, spoons, drinks, more bread, spoons, he was great. And we had a lovely chat with the very friendly and nice proprietor. She was wonderful. Really seemed to care about the place and her team. She told us all about the hotel and stuff it was really cool. We will most certainly come back here next time. You can’t necessarily get the best table every time, but we won’t mind if we don’t! : Oh, also, lovely clean loos!"
