"Spending the week in windswept Wilhelmshaven has been an interesting adventure. The cuisine here is so different from Southern Germany. Fish, fish, everywhere! My mother and I celebrated her birthday at the An Bord this week and I have to say that it was quite...good! The outside of the building is welcoming, with the menu posted outside the door. Inside the bar that is situated in the middle of the room is in the shape of a ship's bow, complete with the ornamental topless woman. The entire restaurant is decorated tastefully in an understated nautical theme. The menu was large but not overwhelming. We decided to start the evening with an appetizer to share. We chose the shrimp in garlic butter. Before the appetizer was served, we were brought a small welcome from the kitchen. Not being a food critic, I am not sure what the proper name of the dish would be called...but it had the consistency of panna cotta, but was made with Kohlrabi (German turnip) and had a small dollop of chili sauce on top. It was quite flavorful and we both enjoyed it. We were then served our shrimp skewers. Although we were splitting an appetizer, the kitchen tastefully put one skewer and a small salad on two seperate plates for us. The shrimp and garlic butter were great, not overcooked, and had a nice flavor. The salad was crisp and the DRESSING was fantastic! We then ordered the Fish Platter for two. It was enormous! We were served four different types of fish (Zander, Salmon, Rotbarsch, and sadly I cannot remember the last) along with large prawns and two miniature lobsters. Along with this was a medley of steamed vegetables and fried potatoes. There were three sauces that came with the platter for the fish (and veggies too, I suppose which were a Mustard Dill sauce, a Hollandaise sauce, and then a red sauce (which resembled a ketchup mayo mix). I liked everything except the red dipping sauce. It was really just bland and had no particular flavor. I think if they put a dash of chili sauce in it, it would be great! For dessert I had the Creme Brulee, which had been prepared ahead of time and tasted fine. The price for our entire meal, including beers, house wine (a Merlot that tasted fine), a Mineral Water, and a Cuppucino came to Euro. This is a great restaurant for the town of Wilhelmshaven. I really enjoyed myself and liked the food!"
