"We love these M6 services and usually stop mostly on the way north, which we always enjoy. We’ve previously been less impressed with the southbound services. Today at the southbound services and with a seven hour drive ahead of us, we queued for food and drinks and stood at the sandwich bar for ages waiting for a member of staff to notice that we needed serving (it’s not a help yourself sandwich bar). Customers who had trays of hot food got stuck behind us until we told them to go in front of us. Then they had to wait while their drinks order was prepared at the till. And all the time their hot food got colder and colder!! Eventually a member of staff attended to us, but only after we called out “Hey, is anybody serving here?” Service was all rather slap dash and the staff seemed totally disinterested. My wife ordered a toasty sandwich which was stuck in an oven-like “toaster” but ended up only toasted on one side and lukewarm warm. All in all a very disappointing experience. The eating experience was at odds with the shop which was vibrant and enthusiastic. Such a shame to be let down by Tebay, an ‘institution’!"

The food wasn't hot we were in as they opened it was expensive in comparison to elsewhere. Had the dearest breakfast got it wrong and no toast. Hadn't been here for a while but has gone rapidly downhill.

Absolutely disgusting bacon and sausage bap inedible if I hadn’t already left would have took it back. Inedible. If anyone is interested it’s on the hard shoulder of m6 about 250 yards from slip road. Hope the local wildlife survives

I am extremely disappointed. This restaurant has been our favorite for years. Could it be a victim of its own success? The scone and coffee were overpriced and of poor quality. It's such a simple thing to get right, but unfortunately, they missed the mark.

Tebay like all motorway services can be pricey BUT I was delighted to discover they have a modestly price lunch option now. Also suitable for ‘grab and go’ it’s a delicious soup and good sarnie, for £6.50. The facilities are always spotless and the Farm Shop worth a look. Ver carta

Following the TV programme about Tebay, we were very keen to try it on our way to Penrith. We called in for breakfast and what a disappointment!! Watery scrambled eggs on half burnt toast, fried egg had obviously been cooked some time ago, warm sausages, dried up bacon. By the time we had queued for our drinks the breakfast was even colder. The only good thing about Tebay are the views. We spent over £27, what a waste of money!!

We’ve been stopping here for years and have always been hugely impressed, particularly by the shop, which is outstanding. However, the food offer seems to be going downhill. I had fish and chips; the fish was dreadfully overcooked, with dark brown batter, and the portion of peas was microscopic. There were no forks, apart from wooden takeaway ones. Whoever is in charge of the restaurant really needs to pay attention to the many critical reviews.

I had high hopes for visiting Tebay during our trip to Scotland after watching the TV series, but I was extremely disappointed. We arrived just after 10 am and decided to have breakfast, only to find out there were no sausages and at least a 15-minute wait for any available options, which were all shriveled up. We ended up settling for bacon and egg on brown toast, but the food was cold and barely edible. The tea, served in a glass mug, was only half a cup, and the table was dirty. I will not be visiting this place again. It is overpriced and the quality is terrible. Avoid at all costs. Ver carta

We stopped at this restaurant on the way to Manchester Airport around 5pm. Unfortunately, there was limited food options available and what was left seemed to have been sitting out for a while. Despite being hungry and passing other services, we decided to go here and ordered steak pie with chips, macaroni with chips, a coffee, and a hot chocolate. The steak pie was difficult to cut through and the macaroni was unappetizing. The hot chocolate was terrible and the coffee was not up to par. We expected better based on previous reviews. To make matters worse, the meal cost £30. Needless to say, we will not be returning to this restaurant.

Having been to Tebay Services South before on business and had been impressed, dropped in with my wife on the way to Manchester. The food on offer had obviously been sitting for hours, dried and unappealing. My wife choose macaroni and chips, the macaroni was flavourless mush and her hot chocolate weak, with very little chocolate. My steak and ale pie was so hard that I could not cut through the base, I asked for gravy and the staff poured a full ladle of gravy over it, the plate was swimming in gravy. I returned the pie and complained, the disinterested staff gave me a new pie but never replied to my comment about the macaroni. Staff were disinterested in my complaint, they just had a blank...

"We had a disappointing experience during our stay. The bedroom was quite cold, and despite asking for the heating to be turned on, we had to sit in our coats. The bathroom was freezing each morning, and the dining room didn't offer much relief either. The heating was activated for just one hour, which meant the radiator was cold again when we returned to our room. Their cost-cutting measures significantly impacted our enjoyment. We raised our concerns multiple times, but there was no one available when we settled the bill. At £100 per night for bed and breakfast (totaling over £200 including dinner), it was frustrating to be so uncomfortable. Another guest mentioned they had complained about the heating during their previous visit, only to be told there was an ongoing issue. It seems they simply won’t turn on the heating. We won’t be returning, especially since it’s quite a drive to get into town. Regarding the room, we were assigned an attic room (Room 8). It had many steep stairs and low headroom in places. While the bathroom was nice, it was also freezing. The towel rail was pointless since it was stone cold, and my husband had to skip his morning shower due to the chill. We ended up moving to Room 7, which was smaller but slightly warmer despite having a cold bathroom. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly, and the lights were all or nothing. The next morning, we moved our belongings back to Room 8 since they finally decided to turn on the electric wall heater—which they could have done from the outset. It only took the chill off for a little while. On our last night, we experienced a brief boost of heat, but it only lasted an hour. When we returned after dinner, the room was already cool again. As for nearby activities, there’s a park across a busy road, but everything else requires driving to reach shops and restaurants. Safety-wise, the hotel faces a main road, and there are very few parking spaces available (around four); otherwise, you need to park on the main road. Walking to town is possible, but it takes about 15 to 20 minutes downhill. In terms of food and drinks, the breakfast was decent. When asked if we wanted toast, we received just one slice on the same plate as the cooked breakfast. After asking for more, we had to wait a while before we were given another slice. Dinner was acceptable but nothing to write home about; it felt overpriced compared to the excellent authentic Indian restaurant we found in town, which served great food at better prices and opened at 5 PM. Overall, I'd recommend bringing warm clothes for both the bedroom and dining area; we even saw another guest sitting in her coat the entire time."
