"Second visit. The small plates menu is varied and ideal for pre theatre. The staff are highly efficient and ensure that they are aware of which play you are going to see. Food quality is excellent and although the wine list is short there is sufficient choice for most tastes. The outdoor terrace is a great place to be seated in the summer with great views across the river. Happy to recommend as a staple for anyone going to the National Theatre."

The restaurant has a wonderful location and provides friendly service, but it remains relatively unknown.

Been coming to Terrace for pre performance meals for several years. The menu seems to have deteriorated recently. What is it with nuts? Seem to be included in most items.

Love popping in here for a quick bite pre theatre. Service always good, and quick. Food is tapas-style and very yummy. Also nice for a light bite before sitting down for a performance. Ver carta

1st time visit here. Nice ambience. 6 of us ate lovely choice on menu and food nicely cooked. We all enjoyed it. Waiters friendly and attentive. Good for pre theatre at National or generally if on Southbank.

Pre-theatre dinner was just right with sharing plates of high quality. Sadly, the room is soulless even though the charming staff tried hard to make our visit pleasant. It would be an idea for the management to review the layout and colour scheme so the ambience is less than that of a factory canteen!

Very good value and good food but disappointing ambience, service and general feeling of being rushed. Allergies and dietary requirements were considered and marked on the menu, which was great, but then not observed when food was served and staff didn’t seem to care because it was closing soon. Should make it clear it closes at 7.30pm. Ver carta

Terrace is a great option if you're going to a performance at the National Theatre. They always ask first thing whether you're seeing a show and which one, so they can help time your meal. The menu is interesting and changes reasonably regularly food is seasonal and very good! You can't go wrong here, unless you've forgotten to book ahead!

Brilliant experience. The meal was booked for 7 people prior to a performance. The staff were excellent and helpful and the meal with sharing plates worked well. There was one vegan eater in our group and the vegan and vegetarian options were varied and tasty. The meal arrived swiftly which took the anxiety out of getting finished in time for the show. Thank you.

"Went for afternoon tea with my wife, using an 'experience ' voucher from a well known site, costing £35.99 absolute disaster! The description said 'sit down in the sophisticated dining room and tuck into a section of finger sandwiches, tantalising cakes, pastries, macarons and scones with clotted cream and jam. You won 't want this afternoon to end! ' Trust me, we could not get out of their quick enough and go and find somewhere to get something to eat. The sophisticated dining room was a large, cold room with only a couple of other diners, sticky wooden tables, with no table cloths, just a flimsy paper napkin and a knife and fork. We ordered a coffee and a tea, which came in the smallest teapot, I have ever seen. Later in the meal, when we asked for another drink, we were told that was extra and were charged another £5.70. The food was nothing like as described or pictured on the website. A sad looking selection of sandwiches four quarters each of thin sliced bread one containing a very small piece of processed ham, a second mashed up egg, third was some sort of fish, not sure if it was salmon or tuna; and finally some sort of green leaf with something wet on top it looked like the sandwich had been made days earlier and then sat upon! No pastries or macarons but the two scones with clotted cream and two little pots of jam were OK, however the remaining small cakes were dreadful, none of them were fresh there were two eclairs that were inedible, either the cream or chocolate was off and they were very dry; two little red velvet cakes, which again were dry and horrible; and finally two small pieces of carrot cake that were the least objectionable but again very dry. When we told the waitress the eclairs, she said she would tell the chef but no offer of an alternative. True, it was an unforgettable experience, but not in the way we had expected! We have had afternoon teas in top hotels, pubs, cafes and well known garden centres and nothing came close to being as bad as this meal. Needless to say we will never return and would strongly advise caution if anyone is thinking of going here."
