"This place has the vibe of that local haunt where they serve food only to qualify for a late license. You know the type the locals are entertained when someone unwittingly asks to order food and the barman looks around uncertainly. You see the regulars all casting glances to see what the food is actually like. You 'd probably be doing it, too. Except I didn 't expect The Clarence to be our local Star Wars Bar. It 's apparently under new ownership, but it 's still benefitting from the previous team 's ethics and reputation. It might be fun to chat with the new owners and have a few drinks, and it 's probably lively enough in the evening, but today I 'm here for lunch, and today lunch is not good. I 've been thrilled with the food service in The Clarence in the past the service and product both sang a happy song (so I 'll leave the original review below. Just for contrast . And now let 's get to lunch! To get straight to the point, I have a pretty quirky food allergy. I ordered something that shouldn 't contain that ingredient (a sandwich! but I checked with the wait staff first. She shrugged and said that she 'd put a note on the order. As you might have anticipated, when the plate is put in front of me, there 's that specified food nemesis, mixed into the mayo on the sandwich. I could smell it immediately. My companion happened to have ordered the same, so could they just have got two plates muddled? They could. We swap. It 's not just the mayonnaise. It 's also in the oil dressing the garnish is drenched in. The oil is, by now, also in the sandwich. I can 't eat it. A waitress is approaching the table just as I notice this. By the time I turn to her, she 's vanished, and she doesn 't come near us again. We don 't see anyone, actually, until it 's time to take our money, which they do. There 's no acknowledgement of the mistake. Now, I don 't expect the staff at The Clarence are deliberately poisoning customers for giggles and drama, and I can definitely understand how someone in a stressed kitchen can mindlessly chuck a dressing over a salad garnish. But, why were they stressed? There were only five customers in at that point, and one of those was off shift staff. Problems happen in every environment. You can minimise the risk of a serious mistake, but at some point, it will happen. It 's whether the business takes responsibility that tells you if they 're responsible. And whether you should go there again! Was it a one off, a bit of an off day? The way the staff skulk about the bar, the sticky tables and grubby chairs, the chaotic back bar, the refusal to let me talk to the management because they 're 'busy upstairs ' all these clues point to it 's a dive . You 're probably ok if you 're not ordering food. But maybe stick to the optics! 2019: Our waiter, Ryan, was an absolute diamond, looking after us beautifully and giving us the benefit of his fantastic product knowledge. The guy absolutely understands all his products and can tell you everything from provenance to flavour profiles. The food is well cooked and cleanly presented with good (but not wasteful portions, and while the menu is perhaps not varied enough to tempt some customers back frequently, it leaves you confident that all the produce can be freshly prepped ahead of each service. They 're using local suppliers, too. There 's a relaxed atmosphere inside, with gridded spotlights casting flattering pools of light on each table without the overwhelming brightness that often accompanies similar industrial interiors. Music seems to have been considered just as carefully; it gives you privacy but doesn 't make conversation difficult. The Clarence is a treat, the burgers are lush and they also serve Vimto (edit: no more Vimto! What a shame! . Bury needs this place! Give it a go."

Back on form!! We heard the previous absentee London owners had sold to a new couple from the south coast. They are the breath of fresh air The Clarence needed. The quality of the food you get for the extremely reasonable prices means true value for money. My parents were visiting and really pleased we chose to return here, as they both loved it. Support local businesses, and get to the Clarence for some good grub!

"Well, it 's been a while since I 've reviewed a place but this little gem has certainly reawakened my vigour for it. Visited this evening as a kind of belated birthday celebration with my husband and son and very glad we did indeed. We happened upon this place a few weeks back (passing by and grabbing a cocktail after the days plans fell through and instantly took to the place and it 's wonderful staff and from the off had intentions to visit again an so finally did tonight), within seconds of seating ourself at the bar we were remembered by the owners, which to me shows great calibre on the customer service front. As someone with an exceptionally sweet tooth when it comes to alcohol it was our lucky day to find they had cocktails on 2for£10 and hell can the owner Jo mix like a minx (even doing us an off menu blend to account for tastes). The husband not being a big drinker happily sat at the bar chatting with staff and customers nursing his Peroni whilst me and my son dived headlong into the extensive classical and modern mixed cocktail list. Having been lured into great expectations (previously sampling delicious tasters) from Jo 's lovely husband Dave on our first brief visit we were definitely eagerly placed to dive into dinner tonight. Our lovely waitress Sian, stood patiently while we chopped and changed idea 's and orders, laughed with us, checked regularly everything was to our tastes as did the other young waitress that dropped drinks over to us. Both girls portraying the perfect mix of friendly and professional, a refreshing change to be served by people that clearly enjoy their working environment. And on to the food... we started with olives (and boy was it a substantial portion in comparison with some establishments weak efforts), hubby was first in there, impressed with the quality of marinade (too many places these days forget the little efforts like this thinking folk can 't differentiate something tipped out of a supermarket packet). After much debate (I had my eye on far too many dishes) choices were made, Hubby had the Filo Kefta, which had a light pastry, adequate spice and smoothly complimentary dip, for main he went with the day 's Special of Lamb with fondant potato, heritage carrots and a divinely velvety Jus which he thoroughly enjoyed (and he 's hard to please, being well versed himself and making a point of getting the lovely Chef Darren a glass of wine in appreciation). The lad had a Sirloin steak burger cooked medium rare and is now demanding we visit again soon. lol I went with the Gravlax to start, instantly aware of the clean flavour from its curing cutting through (I even brought a titbit home for my kitty to enjoy), as for main, I 'd initially had my mind on fish but upon discovering the owner Jo was also a blue steak lover I had to try one there and wow they really take care in choosing their suppliers because that was an A grade cut of meat, even my son (who prefers medium-rare) upon trying a slice said it was an exceptional piece of meat I had it with asparagus, no sauce and swapped out the chips for a feta/pepper bowl which worked perfectly as did the glass of Shiraz that Jo picked out to compliment it for me. Genuinely I can not pick fault (read through my other reviews I write honestly, pick fault where warranted and compliment where due). Had this lovely little find been in our usual local it would surely become a regular haunt ours for sure. I would 100% recommend this place and extend our gratitude to all the staff for making our entire visit memorable and perfect."

"We were in Bury for a few days visiting family and the weather was beautiful , we live on the Wirral and frequently visit Brasco lounge in Liverpool of the same chain , which we love. We actually visited Racconto lounge 3 times on our visit , first time we had a brunch of bacon and egg muffin , which we really enjoyed (although the bacon was very salty) The next day we came back and had a lounge breakfast , and the following day we brought my husbands mum , and drank cups of tea while resting from shopping . We enjoyed all the meals , and its lovely inside , although we ate on the terrace in the sunshine and we found all the staff very pleasant and friendly . But..... we had 2 things let it down for us . Firstly on each occasion , the service was extremely slow, when we had breakfast , it wasn't very busy , but we waited ages , although our tea was brought out well before the food , meaning we then had no drinks to go with the food . The second problem was , after waiting ages , we had to send the breakfast back as it was really cold , and it seemed like it had been sat waiting , almost as long as we had , the bacon on both the breakfast muffin and the breakfast was really , really salty also. None of this would put us off , as we enjoyed the dining experience overall , but if you are in a rush , i really wouldn't recommend eating here , as the wait was alot longer than expected every time ."
