"We visited Helmsley for the day with our dog and decided to stop in this restaurant for lunch. We had been here before and knew that their jacket potatoes were excellent because they have a potato oven. My wife ordered the jacket potato with beans, and I opted for the cheese one. I chose to have my cheese melted, which was the perfect choice. My jacket potato came with a side salad and coleslaw, while my wife's baked beans jacket potato was generously portioned. We also shared a pot of decaf tea, which was steeped just right to ensure it was ready to pour when it arrived. The food and drink were excellent, and we found it to be great value for money. The atmosphere was lovely, and the staff were very friendly to us and our dog. It felt like being part of a family. We have visited before and will certainly come again."

I’m rather embarrassed to say, I’ve lived in the area for over 15 years and have only just found this gem of a cafe!! Friendly, good selections, good timing for orders coming out. Cumberland Sausage baguette …… lush!! Will defo be back after slapping myself for not visiting sooner! Ver carta

I returned to this cafe for the second time and once again, it did not disappoint. The atmosphere is very welcoming, the menu offers a variety of classic dishes with generous portions and reasonable prices. It is also dog-friendly and there is enough space between tables. I highly recommend visiting if you are in the area.

The Cocoa Tree is a lovely coffee shop located in the center of Helmsley. It was neat and cozy, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. We were treated to some of the best coffee we've ever had! I tried the cappuccino cake while my husband had the lemon cake, and both were absolutely delicious. If you're in Helmsley, we highly recommend stopping by The Cocoa Tree for a visit. Ver carta

We visited with friends for coffee which was excellent so much so that we returned for lunch which was again excellent. The surroundings are light and airy with really comfortable chairs. We were spoilt for choice from the menu and specials boards everything sounded delicious. The staff were all friendly and efficient and the food was superb. The star dish was the “Discovery fruit cake with Wensleydale cheese”. A special thank you for looking after us so well today.

Visited Helmsley on a cold and wintery Tuesday and found a very warm welcome at the Cocoa Tree. The interior is bright, airy and very nicely decorated and furnished. The cafe serves a good selection of light meals, sandwiches, cakes and deserts. We had home made soup, baked potato with cream cheese and smoked salmon, served with a side salad. Then we had the Discovery fruit cake, made with apricots, ginger and brandy and served with a slice of Wensleydale. All was delicious and the owner was extremely friendly and helpful. Highly recommended. Would definitely return.

"The problem began with our arrival. We are 3 adults in our mid-60s and we had already climbed one set of steps to access the bar in the pub. We were escorted to our room up two more flights of narrow stairs. On entering our room, we could smell the damp in the room and discovered mould on walls behind furniture and in the corners of the window frames. We checked the prices of the evening meals on offer and there wasn't enough variety for our party and they were quite expensive. So we decided to eat out. I asked what time the pub closed and was told, when the last customer leaves. I thought that was a bit vague so I said that we would be back at 10-ish. We arrived back just after 10pm to find all entrances to the pub were fully locked up and we were unable to get in. I called the pub and, after a while, my call went to voicemail with a message that there was no one to answer my call. I left a voicemail, this was followed by another message to say that there was no one to respond to my voicemail! My party had got back into the car as it was raining and I drove to the front of the pub and sounded my horn for some time then drove to the back of the pub. At this point, a man appeared saying he had a message to come and let us in so, finally, we got in to the pub to access our room. We had an uncomfortable night but managed to get up for the early breakfast (great breakfast! and check-out. We raised all the damp and mould issues with the man who had let us in and, as one of us was asthmatic, told him that we would be leaving a poor review of the room and that they shouldn't book that room out to any one else until the issues were resolved."
