"I really wish that I could rate “0” because even giving this place “1” is being generous. I called in to place an order for a family of four on Wednesday Gluten free night. Then even called back to confirm the gluten free as my nanny is celiac and would be deathly ill. Upon my arrival once again said this order is Gluten free correct ?? Then was told I didn’t say gluten free and he’s already made it. He wasn’t going to make another one and then followed by he doesn’t speak very good English. Really because he understood everything okay then. I replied with we called twice and after he argued with me finally he made another piece of fish. The service is terrible, the fish was okay but the fries were not nearly cooked enough and soggy. Beware if your gluten free apparently this place has no idea how terribly sick someone can be when your celiac. Terrible service and won’t be going back."

Reheated chips....as a chef very disappointed with the food!! think the oil needs changing too. The chips were very dark as was the cod roe.

I was surprised to read the reviews as my experience was totally different. The fish and chips were made to order, the quality good and the portion size large. Would use again.

Went here yesterday, 75 mile round trip and I can honestly say it’s worth the effort. Light crisp batter on perfectly cooked cod and fresh chunky chips without any greasiness, utterly amazing and quite unexpected.

This is the second time I’ve come here in preference to other local shops and I was really impressed. The batter on my fish was so light and the chips cooked to perfection. (I often have to leave most of my batter but I enjoyed the whole of my meal last night). Yay!! Yes you have to be prepared to wait as everything is cooked to order but well worth it. Will definitely return

First dinner of fish chips I’ve had in a long time due to being gluten free and not knowing where to find a good place. The Hook! Wow! Amazing. Was being really lazy and had it delivered, super speedy service. Well, what can I say, lovely large portion of cod with a fantastic flavour. The batter was very crisp, golden and tasty. It was not greasy in anyway and the chips were proper fish and chip shop chips.

We were so, so relieved to find the Hook fish and chip shop was open on a Monday evening in August! The removers finished moving us in and left at 8.30pm. We phoned in our order before picking it up. We had such a lovely welcome from Jimmy, excellent fish and superb chips. There were so many chips we had enough for 'oven chips ' the next day when they were still delicious. Not greasy, great taste. We have tried all the other local chip shops and now we only go to the Hook fish n chip shop. It 's by far our favourite.

"I would first like to start out by saying that this is a gorgeous little cafe, with very friendly staff and great options for everyone. I have been eating at The Orchard for a couple of years, and have loved it. I am plant based, and have always found their vegan options to be brilliant! However, last week I accidentally ate meat for the first time in 6 years due to fault of the chef. Twice in a row, I have visited and ordered a vegan) seitan Reuben sandwich, and have been served the real meat version instead, which I believe contains corned beef traditionally. Luckily for me, the first time this happened, the waitress noticed before I could even eat any, and they replaced it quickly. I understand these things do happen, and am a big believer in second chances, so I went back recently. I ordered the same sandwich, and took 3 mouthfuls before realising something tasted unfamiliar, so I checked inside and found real meat. I was devastated when I realised, and so was the waitress and manager. The manager refunded our total bill, and was incredibly apologetic and mortified that it had happened. I know this wasn't any fault of the front of house staff they listened carefully. I feel like I can't go back, unfortunately, as I can't risk eating meat again. And I'm really sad that's the case, because this was one of my favourite spots to eat and I'll miss it so, so much!! I hate to rate a small business poorly, but I really felt I needed to warn any non meat eaters, as I can only imagine how much more devastating it would be if this happened to someone that gave up meat for religious or allergy reasons. If you eat meat then there's no need to worry, as this place is fantastic otherwise. If the cafe replaces their chef then I would love to come back one day... :"
