"Sorry to say we were disappointed. We stayed and ate here for 2 nights in November ‘23 then again earlier this week (March ‘24) ; hoping that after the refurbishments that the hugely positive reputation and eye watering price tag were well placed conclusion? no, not really. Room lovely and comfortable but sadly only those without dogs qualify for the sea view option. Dinner: some really excellent dishes although pretty small and very expensive. A few strange misfits: smoking potatoes really doesn't work the very strong bitter flavour overpowering all else; also seasonal greens are great but another strong flavour and these were the only vegetable sides on offer, besides chips. Breakfast was very surprisingly disappointing: the only bread available was supermarket white sliced (peculiar after we had the most fabulous crusty homemade bread with dinner the previous evening). Otherwise, such an old fashioned offering (the orange juice and marmalade are excellent though). Just a couple of Kellogg's type choices of cereal. The closest thing to muesli and fresh fruit they suggested came as a soup plate full of plain granola and a second soup plate full of tinned fruit salad. hmm. Bacon thick and not crispy and eggs overcooked. Background music we felt was inappropriate with the same type piped relentlessly at all times of day: lots of early rock&roll and raucous R&B. However, the staff are all just lovely we enjoyed meeting them all and lots of other guests; and the location is fabulous. We just feel that it doesn't quite hang together yet and really wasn't value for money."

Recently visited the Pierhouse for lunch after high recommendation from friends and I was not disappointed. The freshest seafood, the friendliest staff, the best location and the largest selection of Scottish gins and whisky to keep me coming back many more times!

My partner and I have dined at The Pierhouse multiple times over the past few years. It has consistently impressed us with its beautiful location, welcoming and attentive staff, and delicious food. We have fond memories of our dining experiences there, especially the Lemon Sole which was outstanding, and the seafood platter that was truly impressive. The vegetarian and vegan options were also exceptional and not your typical choices. We highly recommend this restaurant and are eagerly looking forward to our next visit.

Absolutely the best in the west The food at the Pierhouse just gets better and better. The seafood is mouth watering and there are delicious vegetarian and meat options for those who don 't eat fish. But you 'd be missing out on the freshest fish cooked perfectly. Desserts are to die for especially the sticky toffee pudding. The staff are brilliant, nothing is too much trouble and they are all 'on it ', a very impressive team. On top of this, the location is spectacular with beautiful comfortable decor. It is a feast for the senses, and I cant wait to go back

I have dined at the Pierhouse on several occasions now, both as a hotel resident and walk-in. The food has, on every occasion, been some of the best I have experienced. The cosy yet tasteful decor combined with the stunning panoramic landscape views provides an immersive experience of some of the best seafood that Scotland has to offer. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and professional. The menu caters surprisingly well to vegetarian/vegan diners too, with the chef clearly giving as much consideration to these unique dishes as to the meat and fish. All in all, one of my favourite restaurants that I always look forward to revisiting. Ver carta

We had an unplanned visit due to some campervan technical issues. The restaurant promised seafood heaven and in some respects, it did not disappoint. The location was wonderful and the interior superb. We were in the outdoor area with our dog and were made to feel very welcome. The staff were very attentive. The food was excellent but expensive. The mussels came without bread or any accompanying side, and the monkfish was delicious but the portions were small. It would have been fine if it was £20 or came with sides, but it was £30 with nothing to make up for the small portion size. Overall, it was a lovely place but they need to either increase portion sizes or adjust their prices.

I had a wonderful dining experience at the newly renovated Pierhouse last week. The restaurant had been closed for 2 months for refurbishment, and reopened with brand new kitchen facilities. I went with friends for dinner and we were delighted by the compact and bijou menu, which allowed for flexibility in choosing our dishes. The servers were very competent and explained that we were not limited to the traditional starter/main/dessert model. We enjoyed dishes such as crispy lamb, whipped gruth dubh, Cullen skink, burnt hollandaise grilled fish, bouillabaisse, dark chocolate tart, and apple tart with custard. The food was excellent and creatively presented. My grilled fish with hollandaise s...

This is my second review as is being redone after comments left by the general manager. My pal read it as well and explained the difference in experience from last time 10 years ago under different ownership. Put simply this place overcooks food, would charge you for the air you breath as an extra if it could, like others have said half of the food is over cooked. This is not to the same standards under previous ownership. No starters on the menu ... this is how far its gone down hill. The uncooked food ie oysters were great to be fair though. The tarte tatin was a joke. The proper custard I don't think they know the French words for it lol) was thin and clearly did not use egg yokes and a v... Ver carta

I cant praise this wee gem of a hotel highly enough. From the super friendly staff to the fabulous food..it adds up to an incredibly relaxing indulgent experience. Being a returning customer I could see the improvements and renovations being carried out both in the bedroom and public areas. The beds are still just as comfortable and guarantee a great nights sleep. Rooms are spotless and lovely welcoming touches are appreciated. The star of this hotel tho is the food..best seafood to be had anywhere and the cheese soufflé and cullen skink is to die for. Menu is varied and there is something for everyone ...have tried most of it during our many stays and now find it difficult to chose a favour...

Full of high expectations prior to arrival. A beautiful setting right on the waterfront. However the check In was completed in the middle of the bar which was extremely busy and it all felt very awkward. We had booked for dinner. The food is on the expensive side however it wasn’t the cost that was the issue it was the menu and the quality that really let it down. Not easy to navigate the menu as it looked like a menu of mains and no starters. Then the realisation that if you wanted any veg or potatoes you had to pay extra on top of what was already an expensive main dish. The mussels were dry and over cooked. The room was ok. Bed wasn’t that comfortable and mattresses past the sell by date....

"On our last day here, killing time before the ferry, decided to try luncheon here. No expectations either way. And we were TOTALLY wowed it was just excellent. Trying not to put too many superlatives in this review, but it was really, really ace. We had a lovely table by the window overlooking the harbour where you could see dog walkers, children in wellies, crabbing, and little boats coming and going. Classic Islay. Then I have to mention the food. Jeez, it was top notch, and huuuuuuuge portions. I don’t think we’ve ever had four such consistently generous and fulfilling portions before. We had the scallops (massive, juicy, plentiful , the Crofter’s Platter, which was cheeses, hams, sausage rolls, salad, bread, chutneys; the soup massive bowl, loadsa crispy sourdough bread, and the fish and chips which was so big it draped over the plate! All delicious. Our guy, Andrew, was superb, so attentive and smiley and always bringing us more things, spoons, drinks, more bread, spoons, he was great. And we had a lovely chat with the very friendly and nice proprietor. She was wonderful. Really seemed to care about the place and her team. She told us all about the hotel and stuff it was really cool. We will most certainly come back here next time. You can’t necessarily get the best table every time, but we won’t mind if we don’t! : Oh, also, lovely clean loos!"

"We booked this restaurant after reading the reviews while touring Scotland what a disappointment. When we arrived we were shown to a table straight behind the door and as it kept opening and shutting it blew a massive amount of cold air in. As both parents and staff allowed 2 young children to go in and out every few minutes it got a bit much. We were given the menu and told specials were on the board. No description or recommendation. Also they did not say the board also goes over the top of the fish on didplay. I had crab claws to start the mayonnaise was lovely and what I could get out of the claws was nice but I was given no instruments to get into the claws and they were not broken enough for them to just pull out. I ordered the turbut for main as did my husband it was a small fillet with the skin correctly removed but it was loaded with garlic butter sauce you couldn't taste the fish for the garlic. Also which was worse I don't know what they did to the top of it but it was yellow and like thin rubber. We had to peel it off it was not good. I didn't complain at the time because I am not used to having a fillet of turbut. When I have had it before my husband and I have shared a turbut presented whole at the table. I have only written this today after speaking to some friends who said i should put something on because there had to be something wrong for the top of the fish to be yellow and leathery. You might guess but I won't be going back."
