"Went for a last minute meal at this restaurant, we’d heard it had improved as the reputation wasn’t very good in the past, but thought we’d give it a fresh go. For an old building and looks like it’s been modernised it was very sparse and cold looking lnside. The room wasn’t warm looking and we were plopped in the middle of the room on a table of 4 when there was tables of 2 available. The table was next to the kitchen/toilet entrance where all the noises from the fridges and clatter and chat wasn’t very inviting whilst eating our food. Asked the waitress to close the door and she did. The menu looked very varied so I went for the pie and my quest the burger. The pie was very nicely presented but that was it. The pot pie was tough and not easy to eat the greens and mash was ok gravy wasn’t the same as the pie so looked week and cheap instead of the pie gravy which looked nice. The burger came out very impressive but alas that was it as well. A big hunk of pressed meat with No flavour and very dry and tough to eat. No moist burger here. Won’t visit again and I suggest you all do the same it’s not worth the money. Wish we’d had a takeaway."

I went to this restaurant for Sunday lunch. The food was good quality, delicious, and the portions were very generous. The service was attentive and they were willing to accommodate any requests. I will definitely return.

One the best roast beef Sunday dinners I have had. Generous portions, the beef was really tender and lots of it. Nice puds and an excellent house Merlot, all served by pleasant, helpful staff. Reasonably priced for the quality. Going to recommend to friends and family.

Lovely relaxed pub, very clean and comfortable. We stopped in with a couple of muddy dogs. And sat outside in the sunshine. Staff helpful quick and friendly. Didnt mind two huge dogs. Food and drink was lovely lunch. In much need off after long dog walk. Would def return. Ver carta

It used to be an absolutely fantastic restaurant with character and very snug. Alas it has been sanitised and is now modern without character. The interior is very smart and modern but not 'country '. The food is definitely average but the young staff are excellent. Pleasant and helpful and efficient.

We went for Sunday lunch and were disappointed with the poor quality of the food, which was served cold and not presented well. We informed the waiting staff about our experience, but they seemed uninterested and only offered a half-hearted apology. We have enjoyed the food at this restaurant before, but after today's experience, we will hesitate to visit again.

After reading the more recent reviews my expectations were a little on the low side before visiting for Sunday lunch. I'm so pleased to say the service and food were fantastic. Fresh, tasty and generous portions. The beef on the roast was so tender. Best I've experienced for quite some time. Big shout-out to the women behind the bar. You made us feel very welcome. Thank you Ver carta

I visited this restaurant twice for lunch during my vacation and I absolutely enjoyed the food. The Sunday lunch was delicious and freshly made, including homemade Yorkshire puddings. I ordered the pork which was superb. I returned a few days later and tried the steak and ale pie as well as the lasagne, both of which were outstanding. The lasagne was especially notable, the best I've had in quite some time.

Very easy to divert to from the A1 and we used it as a lunch stop on the way up to Yorkshire and found it to be more of a restaurant than a pub. Two areas either side of the central bar which according to CAMRA’s Whatpub, and indeed historical photos, used to support three local real ales. But not for our visit, which found a limited beer selection with no real ales and Theakston Best on keg as the only available bitter. This is very much badged as a gastro pub and functioned more as a restaurant than pub on the experience of this visit. The food we experienced was very passable, especially as they had smaller plates ideal for a light lunch, and I wouldn’t hesitate to divert here again when...

"The Stag Inn is a delightful looking pub overlooking the small green in the village of Barkston near Grantham. Internally the pub is clean and tidy with a range of two and four seater tables with New England shades of light blue on the painted table legs in the restaurant area. We didn’t venture into the pub side so can’t vouch for the decor in there. We arrived unannounced just after opening time of 12 and were offered a table with no difficulty. There was a menu of the usual offerings of fish and chips and a range of burgers together with roast salmon, chargrilled pork chop, a leek and cauliflower cheese pot pie, ham egg and chips and a vegetable lasagne amongst others. A specials chalkboard hung on the far wall and the crab and prawn salad with Mediterranean bread sounded so good we both opted for it. That was a mistake as we were to find out. The meals were reasonably quick to arrive and were served up in two large bowls with a dusting of paprika round the edges. What hit me immediately was the large flaccid green lettuce leaf draped over the edge of the bowl, together with a whole half-a-lemon that we each had. A small wedge would be perfect. The bread tasted sweet and was as far from the Mediterranean as it could possibly be apart from the occasional input of sundried tomato. What irked me most though was that the bread was delivered up pre-buttered with what looked like some bright yellow catering spread. A small ramakin of real butter between the two of us would work so much better. When asked if everything was okay I mentioned this and was told that chef would be informed. Having said all that the crab and prawn salad was full of flavour and sat on a nice mixed salad of red peppers, lettuce, red onion and cornichons. A word of advice to the wise….. don’t sit at the table near the restaurant counter as this is where the pub’s phone is located. On at least two occasions the phone was left to ring unanswered by the staff, presumably as they were busy elsewhere (the pub was by no means full) and was right behind my head! The volume of the ringer was high and it would have been a more pleasant experience for us if, firstly, it was answered and, secondly, the volume was turned down. On the plus side the staff were polite and helpful but the food not so great."
