"I was in Muirkirk and decided to try out Top Dexter for breakfast. The price was a great deal at £11 for two people, including a full breakfast and a mug of coffee and tea. The food was delicious and clearly of high quality (not your typical cheap breakfast items). The breakfast included two thick bacon rashers, a sausage, sliced sausage, two hash browns, beans, a fried egg, a potato scone, and two slices of toast - all excellent value and very tasty. The lady who served us was also very friendly. I will definitely be returning on my next hillwalking trip to Muirkirk."

Really warm welcome, amazing food (been several times....pizza is fabulous) and good choice of soft drinks. One of our favourite places in our home town.

I visited this wonderful café on the main street in Muirkirk. I stopped in for a meal during a long cycle and enjoyed a delicious roll, large coffee, and caramel shortcake. Everything was excellent and I will definitely be returning in the future.

If you happen to be passing through Muirkirk, make sure to stop at TopDexter cafe for a meal. Whether you're looking for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, their menus are exceptional. I have tried them all and can guarantee generous portions and very affordable prices.

We had family business in Muirkirk and decided to visit this hidden gem. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. Our party of 9 all enjoyed their meals. The couple who runs the cafe were incredibly kind and helpful. We will definitely be returning to Muirkirk soon and will be sure to visit this cafe again. Ver carta

On a cold morning, stopped at this small cafe and was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the food, service and size of the portions. All was cooked fresh to my order and the burgers are most definitely a meal in themselves. Reasonable prices and car parking close by. A welcome stop on the A70 and will become a regular one too.

This is a small establishment but because of the pandemic they only carried out a take away service. I got a cheese burger and coffee. The burger was the fattest and most succulent I have ever tasted. None of your McDonald or Burger King here. The service was really quick and will come back here if in the vicinity and hopefully be able to sit in next time.

We visited twice once for tea and later for a snack lunch. Pot of tea was fine but baked items seemed limited to chocolate shortcake (not tried). Lunch of roll with sausage and chips was good plenty of chips. Special request of tuna and side salad was met and nicely presented. No brown bread available. Good: inexpensive; reasonable at what they offer. Could be improved: warmer welcome; acompaniments to tea/coffee. Ver carta

I visited Top Dexter for breakfast on a Sunday. I had a roll with Lorne Sausage and egg, with a side of tattie scone. I can truthfully say, it was a fantastic breakfast, cooked perfectly and in a lovely atmosphere. The couple who run the restaurant made sure I was satisfied with everything. I've heard that their selection of burgers is also excellent. It's definitely worth stopping by, even if you're just passing through.

We stopped in for breakfast on a Monday morning while on our way to Glasgow from our campsite. We ordered five full breakfasts and they were able to accommodate a toddler with egg, beans, and chips. The lady who served us (possibly the owner) was friendly and provided great service. Our food came out quickly and was all cooked perfectly. The hash browns were crispy and not greasy. Some of us tried tattie scones for the first time and most of us enjoyed them. The food was delicious and very affordable.

"Visited using an Itison voucher for steak surf turf. Decided to have soup for starters which was advertised as being served with freshly baked bread. The soup was served in a very small bowl and was tasteless. The bread was anything but fresh and felt and tasted like it had been lying in the back of a cupboard for a fortnight. Now for the steak. We asked for sirloin but was told there was none left and we would have to take ribeye. The steak arrived and one look put us off. This was certainly not ribeye and was more like some sort of reconstituted beef. I would have to say that it is the worst steak we’ve ever been served. The surf part was 3 sad looking small prawns that had been placed on top of the steak. The owner asked us how it was and we told him how dissatisfied and disappointed we were. To this comment he then became quite aggressive and told us to leave. He obviously doesn’t like criticism. We had our meal on a Saturday night and we’re the only people in the restaurant. Surely this must tell you something. We had booked the dining room but was told it was closed due to lack of clientele and that we would have to sit in the bar. We had been regular visitors and know that they recently lost their head chef who was very good. The food is now very substandard and nothing like the delicious food that was served by the previous chef. Come on Sorn…you need to do much better!!"

"On holiday in the area and found this place online for somewhere to eat. Menu looked great. Arrived and the impression we got with the mess around the building continued indoors. Lady who took us to our table was lovely but then it went downhill again quickly when we were given the menu definitely not what it was online). It was litterly falling apart and only a fraction of what was on the online menu. We ordered food and while waiting 2 women with 5 children came in. Noise from the children was heard as soon as they got to the front door. I don't believe any of the children were at fault as the women didn't try to get them to be just a little quieter they both just shouted louder to hear each other. Both my teenage daughter and I expected the waitress to ask them to maybe just turn the volume down just a little but it turned out she knew them and like the mums she just shouted louder to be heard! Food arrived hot. Steak pie was very tasty but pizza was the kind I can buy in supermarket for about 50p. Desserts of cheesecake and sticky toffe pudding both tasted odd. We didn't eat them and just left to get away from the noise. I totally understand the staff can't dictate who frequents their establishment but they could ask rowdy customers to lower the volume instead of shouting over them. Food was nothing to shout about and we left wishing we had just stopped at the local chip shop instead"

"As we were staying at the Dumfries House Lodge for a couple of nights we took the opportunity to visit the Library Restaurant which is a short stroll away from the guesthouse in Dumfries House itself. Little did we know as we approached the magnificent Robert Adam building in it’s glory on a bright and peaceful evening that we were about to have a private dining experience! By absolute chance there were no other reservations that evening and we had the restaurant to ourselves. Despite my attempt to convince my wife that I had paid a fortune for the privilege I don’t think she was entirely taken in for more than a few seconds. We understand that the following night was fully booked. The setting is quite unique as you are led from the visitors entrance through to the library which had a cosy atmosphere with a log fire burning, the grand mantelpiece surround, the comfortable settee, subtle lighting and a small bar. With our bottle of NZ Pinot Noir ordered and a glass poured we were able to browse the menu in comfort. There were five options for each course and all reasonably priced from starters at £6 £7, mains £12 £22 (steak) and dessert at £5 or cheese for £7. The young waiter, who was attentive but discrete throughout the evening was friendly and efficient. The dining area itself beyond was lined with book shelves and ten or so tables stylishly set with good spacing between although in the circumstances there were no issues with other diners! For starters my wife had Goats cheese with red onion and tomatoes whilst I opted for the Confit Duck Pie with duck scratching and salad. The duck was served in a ramekin style dish topped with mashed potato which was a surprise although the duck was tasty, as was my wife’s goats cheese. Mains for my wife was Chicken Ballantine stuffed with Shitaki served with parmesan gnocchi and spinach which she enjoyed. I had monkfish in butter, served with puy lentils, artichoke puree and herb sauce. The fish was delicious however puy lentils may be an acquired taste which I unfortunately haven’t acquired a taste for as yet and there were quite a lot of them! Dessert consisted of Lemon amoretti cheesecake with a berry compote for my wife and White chocolate panna cotta and a doughnut with an apple sauce for myself. My wife thought the berry compote drowned the other flavours and I thought my dish was just ok. Full marks for the setting, food presentation, service and pricing (our bill including wine was £85 ex tip) but we were slightly disappointed with the flavours of some of the food overall in comparison to our previous meal on the estate at the former Stables Restaurant. At time of our recent visit the restaurant was only open Thursday to Sunday. It is a possibility that in future this restaurant may only be available for private functions, with another being opened within the hospitality centre so we were glad in the meantime to have dined in the House in such exclusive circumstances. Sadly we were escorted off the premises!"
