"Not having been able to visit Upfront for three years due to Covid and travel restrictions, we were eagerly awaiting a further visit on our visit to the UK and the lakes. In fact, Upfront was high on our list of places to visit so a table was booked. However, the restaurant was the quietest we have ever experienced…maybe a little to near to Christmas. The menu contained some of our favourite dishes so it was difficult to decide what to order. When our food arrived, sadly it wasn’t up to the standard we had become used to. The lower layers of pasta in the lasagne, were undercooked and rubbery and the butter bean curry dish was very bland and lacked flavour. The homity pie and quiche dish were fine though. Onto the sweets and we can’t resist a crumble! Unfortunately, we were disappointed once more. The crumble didn’t crumble! It consisted of lumps of crumble and wasn’t particularly hot. One of our party tried the pancake with mixed fruits but, like the lasagne, the pancake was rubbery and was basically inedible. So overall, despite being good in parts, our meal was disappointing and certainly not up to the standards previously experienced. However, the staff, as usual , were wonderful…friendly and professional. We won’t be put off though and next time we visit the UK, Upfront will be high on our list of places to visit."

This cozy cafe has a warm atmosphere and offers delicious food and drinks at a reasonable price. We stopped here during our cycling trip and enjoyed coffee, tea, toasties, and cakes, all of which were fantastic.

Unbelievably bad service! One girl At lunchtime serving, clearing and making coffees is not enough! When eventually someone joined her they were obviously very annoyed to be there! Food was lovely but dreadfully let down by attitude and slowness of service! Will not be back! Ver carta

Have visited here on numerous occasions but today was definitely an ‘off day’ We waited a bit too long for our meals today, hot drinks and cakes were served after about 15 mins, then after about another 10 minutes I enquired about our sandwich toastie and was told in was’ in the grill now ‘ anyways in another 17 minutes in arrived, hot ?! But on the plus side the sandwich was gorgeous , will definitely go again, but I would suggest more staff, as it wasn’t very busy.

Today, we decided to stop by for lunch at the restaurant. The menu looked promising and it was their first day back after a break. We were seated and informed that it was table service. However, despite being at our table, we were completely ignored. Despite several occupied tables, no one acknowledged us or apologized for the delay. After 15 minutes of waiting, we left feeling disappointed. Another couple who arrived at the same time also left. Unfortunately, we will not be returning to this restaurant.

Came with my two daughters on Friday and had some lovely gingerbread and scones, served by two delightful waitresses. Unfortunately just before leaving, we were browsing the gallery and heard some very unpleasant shouting coming from the kitchen, which included swearing. A lovely visit ruined as whichever woman shouting and swearing did so loud enough to upset my youngest daughter. We were planning to return after learning of puppet shows later in the week but I don’t want my young children hearing such language again. Such a shame. Ver carta

Visited with my wife and cousin where we'd booked an early lunch. Very good choice of vegetarian dishes and prompt, friendly service. We had paninis with goats cheese beetroot and horseradish (bit light on the horseradish actually), and an omelette with a selection of fillings I chose goats cheese, red onion, peppers and mushrooms. All nicely cooked and presented with a lovely side salad. Oh, and a serving of delicious chips. We opted to take away a pud apple and blackberry crumble with a very generous helping of cream. Delicious when we eventually ate it. Overall very good, and a nice gift shop/ art gallery to wander about in. Insider tip avoid 12 noon on a Sunday. Unless you enjoy observin...

45 minutes later, my young daughter was visibly hungry and pale. I notified a waitress about our long wait and my concerns for my daughter's well-being. The food finally arrived 10 minutes later, but we had to rush to eat it quickly as the show was starting soon. Despite the delays, there were no apologies from the staff we interacted with. It was surprising to see a large number of staff working, yet service was slow. Eventually, a pregnant mother of three had to take plates of food into the theatre for her family to eat off their laps during the show. The owner apologized to the audience before the show, explaining that the morning show attendees had entered the restaurant at the same ti...

"We had a disappointing experience during our stay. The bedroom was quite cold, and despite asking for the heating to be turned on, we had to sit in our coats. The bathroom was freezing each morning, and the dining room didn't offer much relief either. The heating was activated for just one hour, which meant the radiator was cold again when we returned to our room. Their cost-cutting measures significantly impacted our enjoyment. We raised our concerns multiple times, but there was no one available when we settled the bill. At £100 per night for bed and breakfast (totaling over £200 including dinner), it was frustrating to be so uncomfortable. Another guest mentioned they had complained about the heating during their previous visit, only to be told there was an ongoing issue. It seems they simply won’t turn on the heating. We won’t be returning, especially since it’s quite a drive to get into town. Regarding the room, we were assigned an attic room (Room 8). It had many steep stairs and low headroom in places. While the bathroom was nice, it was also freezing. The towel rail was pointless since it was stone cold, and my husband had to skip his morning shower due to the chill. We ended up moving to Room 7, which was smaller but slightly warmer despite having a cold bathroom. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly, and the lights were all or nothing. The next morning, we moved our belongings back to Room 8 since they finally decided to turn on the electric wall heater—which they could have done from the outset. It only took the chill off for a little while. On our last night, we experienced a brief boost of heat, but it only lasted an hour. When we returned after dinner, the room was already cool again. As for nearby activities, there’s a park across a busy road, but everything else requires driving to reach shops and restaurants. Safety-wise, the hotel faces a main road, and there are very few parking spaces available (around four); otherwise, you need to park on the main road. Walking to town is possible, but it takes about 15 to 20 minutes downhill. In terms of food and drinks, the breakfast was decent. When asked if we wanted toast, we received just one slice on the same plate as the cooked breakfast. After asking for more, we had to wait a while before we were given another slice. Dinner was acceptable but nothing to write home about; it felt overpriced compared to the excellent authentic Indian restaurant we found in town, which served great food at better prices and opened at 5 PM. Overall, I'd recommend bringing warm clothes for both the bedroom and dining area; we even saw another guest sitting in her coat the entire time."
