"Went here with a family of 10 for our Christmas Dinner. Was the only place we could get booked for Christmas’s to accommodate out table size had been here a few years ago and could remember having a good meal there. However, upon arrival we were put through a room In the back. No Christmas decorations anywhere not even a Christmas napkin on the table. So straight away no Christmas atmosphere. Not even a merry Christmas for the staff. Our order was taken from a set menu as you would expect for Christmas and as we knew prior to booking. However we waiting over 45 minutes for our starter. Bearing in mind we had an infant with us. No one had come to to the table to apologise for the delay. From a set menu you’d expect a speedy service but no. The man who took our drinks order first time had forgotten one of the drinks and with no staff in sight we waited the 45 minutes for him to come back to the table just before we even had our starter to say if we wanted anymore drinks. After telling him we’re still waiting on the first one for someone. His reply was “well you will get this one”. Absolutely appalling attitude and extremely rude. No apology or anything. So after the 45 minute wait for the starter. We waiting a further 45 minutes for the main and and 30 minutes for desert. Not the kind of wait you’d expect for a set menu. And even worse whilst trying to entertain an infant. The food itself was ok. But as you can imagine after waiting long periods between courses your expectations become bigger. The meal was finished off with coffee. Which was literally dumped on the table from a young girl who was clearly raging that we said yes to coffee when asked. Again dumped on the table and spilled no apology or anything. Clearly none of the staff wanted to work there that day. Which in turn their appalling attitude feeds back to the customers themselves. Not one for leaving reviews. But I felt I have to as you can imagine it upset our overall Christmas. Appalling attitude from staff and appalling atmosphere. Not a Christmas Dinner you’d expect. Especially when paying an overall total bill of £650. It honestly felt like one of those restaurants you’d see on “Gordon Ramsay Kitchen Nightmares”. As the restaurant needs a severe shake up. I feel sorry for those poor chefs through the back cooking all those meals, as they will be getting let down from the staff at the front of the house. Unfortunately because of my experience I will Not be back. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more reviews like this to come and the restaurant itself will go under due to the way it’s being run and loosing good paying customers."

Haven't been to this place for well over 30 years and was a spur of the moment choice as Langhome was closed. Decor ever so slightly dated and lighting could be better in the area that we were in but on the whole, the food...

Went in late weekday afternoon for a meal, plenty of table seating. Ordered my usual mixed grill and a pint from the app, drink arrived in a couple of mins and the food after about 5 mins. The server was very pleasant and friendly. There's...

Hungry and tired after a long walk in the rain we were driving back to Glasgow. Approaching Symington I remembered the Wheatsheaf Inn from years past. I thought I’d treat my son to a meal. Being a sausage and mash connoisseur he was delighted to... Ver carta

The meal was very disappointing, with tough beef and minimal accompaniments. There were not enough potatoes and no roast potatoes for Sunday lunch. The service was very poor. I understand that it can be difficult to find staff, but this was unacceptable.

I often eat at The Wheatsheaf. The reason I continue to go back is because the service is outstanding, the staff are all friendly, and the food is excellent. You always leave satisfied and the menu offers a wide variety of choices that never get old. The high standards they maintain are what keep me coming back. Kudos to all the staff at The Wheatsheaf.

Been at The Wheatsheaf a number of times over the years and food always been good, however there seems to be a dip in food quality since my last visit 8 months ago. I had the cajun salmon which was very salty. So much so l couldn't eat it. The salmon came drenched in a sauce which was lacking in raster also, and to top it off it had a mini basket of chips dumped in the middle of the sauce.. Nothing Magor but definitely a touch to detail needed.. However lm not sure l would return of my own accord.. Ver carta

Booked a Christmas dinner here at the end of Sept. Upon arrival, we were shown to the back room in the restaurant with two other small tables and absolutely no atmosphere. There wasn’t as much as a Christmas napkin or decoration on the table, and for £65 a head I don’t think that’s much of an ask. We ordered our food at 1:30 and and waited almost 50 minutes for a starter. I can understand they would have been busy however not one member of staff approached us to apologise over the delay or offer us anymore drinks. The food was ok but was expecting a lot more as we waited as long! My partner then ordered coffee which was dumped infront of him and spilled all over the table and the young waitr...

We stopped at this restaurant on our way to our final destination after researching dog and child-friendly options in the area. The interior seemed a bit outdated when we arrived and we were the only customers, but we were pleasantly surprised by the variety of dishes on the menu. Our daughters had garlic bread for starters and sausages and mash for their main course from the children's menu, while the three adults ordered from the set menu. My husband and I had starters of goat cheese and pate, and my mother-in-law opted for the lasagna as her main course. We were impressed by how quickly our starters arrived, and even more impressed by how delicious and beautifully presented they were. The...

"Visited using an Itison voucher for steak surf turf. Decided to have soup for starters which was advertised as being served with freshly baked bread. The soup was served in a very small bowl and was tasteless. The bread was anything but fresh and felt and tasted like it had been lying in the back of a cupboard for a fortnight. Now for the steak. We asked for sirloin but was told there was none left and we would have to take ribeye. The steak arrived and one look put us off. This was certainly not ribeye and was more like some sort of reconstituted beef. I would have to say that it is the worst steak we’ve ever been served. The surf part was 3 sad looking small prawns that had been placed on top of the steak. The owner asked us how it was and we told him how dissatisfied and disappointed we were. To this comment he then became quite aggressive and told us to leave. He obviously doesn’t like criticism. We had our meal on a Saturday night and we’re the only people in the restaurant. Surely this must tell you something. We had booked the dining room but was told it was closed due to lack of clientele and that we would have to sit in the bar. We had been regular visitors and know that they recently lost their head chef who was very good. The food is now very substandard and nothing like the delicious food that was served by the previous chef. Come on Sorn…you need to do much better!!"

"On holiday in the area and found this place online for somewhere to eat. Menu looked great. Arrived and the impression we got with the mess around the building continued indoors. Lady who took us to our table was lovely but then it went downhill again quickly when we were given the menu definitely not what it was online). It was litterly falling apart and only a fraction of what was on the online menu. We ordered food and while waiting 2 women with 5 children came in. Noise from the children was heard as soon as they got to the front door. I don't believe any of the children were at fault as the women didn't try to get them to be just a little quieter they both just shouted louder to hear each other. Both my teenage daughter and I expected the waitress to ask them to maybe just turn the volume down just a little but it turned out she knew them and like the mums she just shouted louder to be heard! Food arrived hot. Steak pie was very tasty but pizza was the kind I can buy in supermarket for about 50p. Desserts of cheesecake and sticky toffe pudding both tasted odd. We didn't eat them and just left to get away from the noise. I totally understand the staff can't dictate who frequents their establishment but they could ask rowdy customers to lower the volume instead of shouting over them. Food was nothing to shout about and we left wishing we had just stopped at the local chip shop instead"

"As we were staying at the Dumfries House Lodge for a couple of nights we took the opportunity to visit the Library Restaurant which is a short stroll away from the guesthouse in Dumfries House itself. Little did we know as we approached the magnificent Robert Adam building in it’s glory on a bright and peaceful evening that we were about to have a private dining experience! By absolute chance there were no other reservations that evening and we had the restaurant to ourselves. Despite my attempt to convince my wife that I had paid a fortune for the privilege I don’t think she was entirely taken in for more than a few seconds. We understand that the following night was fully booked. The setting is quite unique as you are led from the visitors entrance through to the library which had a cosy atmosphere with a log fire burning, the grand mantelpiece surround, the comfortable settee, subtle lighting and a small bar. With our bottle of NZ Pinot Noir ordered and a glass poured we were able to browse the menu in comfort. There were five options for each course and all reasonably priced from starters at £6 £7, mains £12 £22 (steak) and dessert at £5 or cheese for £7. The young waiter, who was attentive but discrete throughout the evening was friendly and efficient. The dining area itself beyond was lined with book shelves and ten or so tables stylishly set with good spacing between although in the circumstances there were no issues with other diners! For starters my wife had Goats cheese with red onion and tomatoes whilst I opted for the Confit Duck Pie with duck scratching and salad. The duck was served in a ramekin style dish topped with mashed potato which was a surprise although the duck was tasty, as was my wife’s goats cheese. Mains for my wife was Chicken Ballantine stuffed with Shitaki served with parmesan gnocchi and spinach which she enjoyed. I had monkfish in butter, served with puy lentils, artichoke puree and herb sauce. The fish was delicious however puy lentils may be an acquired taste which I unfortunately haven’t acquired a taste for as yet and there were quite a lot of them! Dessert consisted of Lemon amoretti cheesecake with a berry compote for my wife and White chocolate panna cotta and a doughnut with an apple sauce for myself. My wife thought the berry compote drowned the other flavours and I thought my dish was just ok. Full marks for the setting, food presentation, service and pricing (our bill including wine was £85 ex tip) but we were slightly disappointed with the flavours of some of the food overall in comparison to our previous meal on the estate at the former Stables Restaurant. At time of our recent visit the restaurant was only open Thursday to Sunday. It is a possibility that in future this restaurant may only be available for private functions, with another being opened within the hospitality centre so we were glad in the meantime to have dined in the House in such exclusive circumstances. Sadly we were escorted off the premises!"
