"We booked here for the first night of our stay of a half term trip . The hotel is set high above the town and accessed by a narrow twisty road, and only have limited parking. Although it was dark, the harbour looked lovely lit up at night and I am sure that during the day the view would be stunning. We were warmly welcomed by staff and took our seat at a table in restaurant situated in a large conservatory on the side of the hotel. It was warm and bright, great music selection being played and had a lovely atmosphere . There was a wide menu choice and a selection of specials. They also offered a selection of gin cocktails featuring local gin, which are highly recommended. The meals were well cooked great tasting and looked great on the plate. We enjoyed our meal so much we re- booked again for our last night , and although it was a similar menu just different specials) but we had the opinion there was a different chef on duty. The taste wasn't so good and meals did not look so elegant on the plate. Also on several of the dishes odd things listed on the plate weren't there or had been changed. It almost seemed that they had run out of supplies or maybe that the hotel was at the end of the season and using up stock. the meal was ok but it would have been nice if staff had apologized that the ingredients weren't available and what had been replaced, especially if people had allergies. It was still a nice meal and would recommend the restaurant to anyone visiting Mull especially later in the year when eating choices are limited."

"I'm really disappointed at eating in colquhouns, but even more disappointed with the managements lacking interest in my feedback that eating was not great. after my dinner in colquhouns I received an email asking for my feedback. I have submitted my assessment on...25. april 2022, in which it is explained that “the fish were nice, but the diligent on the fish was so hard that I could hardly cut it through. expects more of colquhouns especially at a price of £17.50 portions are also quite small. on the top the suppe was fantastic!” I then explained that the fish has set me the food again, which is a pity. I was not sure if the restaurant sees this feedback automatically, so I replied the feedback email sent by restaurant manager to tell them what my review said. this was sent on the 25th april 2022. by 7. mai I sent the restaurant manager by email and copied in the main reserve button and said that I was disappointed that they had not even harassed to answer or acknowledge my complaint. sarah responded friendly to the reservation desk and said that they “carefully hear that I don’t have a pleasant experience in our restaurant” then said “I can confirm that I have forwarded their below email to the responsible manager and they will be in touch in time. it is now 30 mai over a month since I complained, and still no one has harassed colquhouns to pursue this. I usually don't place bad feedback online, but that's three times, I gave them feedback that I'm not happy, and had no answer in the restaurant."

"I wasn’t sure what to expect from our holiday at the Portsonachan hotel as the reviews were so mixed. We enjoyed our stay, it was good but it could easily be great. We stayed in a 2 bedroom lodge with a hot tub Pros Lodge was spacious and we loved the upside down layout Hot tub was lovely and hot The food in the restaurant is of a good standard The breakfast hamper was nicely stocked and was delivered to our door Most of the staff we encountered tried really hard Views are breathtaking Cons The lodge was looking tired in places The kitchen was not well stocked, missing items, only 2 tea spoons and 1 coffee mug in a lodge designed for up to 6 people Our lodge smelt of cigarettes (I’m a non smoker and quite sensitive to it) With the exception of the lounge common areas in the hotel were starting to look tired Waiting on staff in the restaurant were over worked and some errors were made with ordering I’m not going to hold the brown tinted water against the hotel as we were notified of that and bottled drinking water was provided. Showering is a little off putting if you aren’t used to it So overall a mixed picture, we enjoyed our stay but probably wouldn’t visit again. This place was at the upper end of the nightly rate that we would normally pay but didn’t quite have the attention to detail that you might expect. 4 review as we liked it but could easily have loved it"

"Decided on drive and dinner with my elderly Mother and opted for Helensburgh and The Ruby having been there in the past (last time about 2 years ago certainly) and found it to be excellent then. Not the case this time. Arrived just before opening and stood with a little family of 3 waiting to get in. Door opened at 5pm and we were, at that point, the only 2 occupied tables in the restaurant. We were told the window seat we took would need to be back for 7pm as it was reserved, not a problem. Orders taken just after 5pm for 1 starter, 2 mains with rice, drinks of 1 latte and 1 soda water with blackcurrant. The drinks came within minutes as did the prawn cocktail starter. Prawn cocktail was generous portion but had no flavour whole thing was watery. This was cleared from table about 5.15. Sitting at a table with no food about 5.30 a waitress asked us would we like to order anything else? Reply being we’d just like our mains please. By 5.45 still no food and other diners tucking into their main courses despite arriving after us. My Mum still hadn’t eaten a thing as she was ordering a main and planning a dessert . By 5.50 I decided to ask where food was and if it wasn’t ready we were paying for the drinks and one starter and leaving. I approached a waitress and was told the food “wouldn’t be long now” .. remember we’d to vacate table by 7pm. I honestly don’t think the order for our mains had been passed to kitchen until I asked. I returned to table and my Mum and me decided to pay for what we’d had and go so asked waitress for bill as we’d waited 55 minutes by then with no signs of the food. Before leaving I went to the bar area and asked to speak to the manager. Eventually the manager came over. I voiced my concerns about the time we’d waited and was met with complete disinterest and excuses.. “the restaurant is busy” (it was 50% full at this point) , if they struggle to cope at 50% I dread to think how they manage when it’s full. Then she said “the majority of people don’t complain” .. not really a great selling point is that ??? Apparently the lady was the owner and couldn’t have been less interested in the valid point I was making. We sat almost an hour with my mother having no food . Bad enough but the level of apathy and disinterest was surprising for what was once a gem of a restaurant (I believe it’s changed hands since my last visit) Certainly won’t be going back and I’d advise others to spend their time and money on a different restaurant in Helensburgh deserving of both of those and custom welcomed and appreciated"

"We have been many, many times to this Taj Mahal. Not been for a wee while, what a disappointment. Decor and setting is lovely, clean , tidy and inviting. Staff were very pleasant too, although there was a bit on a language barrier. Now the food… Starters of mixed pakora platter with lemon pepper mayonnaise sauce was nice, enough to share. I’ll break down the main meals here Tandoori Chicken on the bone: NO sauce would be served as it usually is. Trying to explain that there should be a Lentil Sauce fell on deaf ears. A sauce was suggested by the Waiter, however this did not complement the meal. The chicken certainly appeared to never been in a Tandoor oven EVER. It lacked taste and disappointment in general. Launguage problem again, so rice and sauce were charged separately. Coconut Nann Bread, certainly had coconut. When we pulled a piece off, yellow dry coconut flew everywhere. Also gave the appearance of never been insisted. Tandoor Oven. Chicken Tikka Masala. The chicken had been on a skewer but at risk of repeating myself, this I would dispute if it had seen the inside of a Tandoor. The sauce was deep burgundy, no cream or almonds to at least make it look appetising. Drinks. No Draught Beers/Lagers. The lager from a can was flat. Rum coke. Can’t go wrong there. All in all this was not a nice experience and paying over £60 , we were robbed. On a positive note, the young waiter was attentive, pleasant and tried to help with menu. What a shame he has a poor grasp of English/ Scottish language."
