"Renowned for its vertiginous landscape and breathtaking views the lake district has always been a firm favourite for the outdoor type. But in recent times Cumbria has quietly built a reputation as a first class foodie destination boasting the most Michelin star restaurants in a county outside London. We were keen to try the ambitious 1863 in Pooley Bridge proudly named after the date it was built. The modern version was welcoming and well furnished with plenty of interesting memorabilia to browse between courses. The 7 course tasting menu started with the regular amuse bouche, tasty but not stunning and there was a suprise glass of bubbles with the wine pairing. The opening venison tartare was splendid, packed in flavour with a welcome hazelnut texture contrast. All courses were excellent but the star of the show was undoubtedly the Creedy Carver duck, perfectly cooked, well seasoned, a crispy skin and accompanied with duck leg wrapped in savoy cabbage and pumpkin seeds. The wine pairings were well matched although the Rioja Blanco, with the halibut; was perhaps slightly over woody for my pallet. If there was one criticism the sommelier needs some work, particularly if there is ambition to join the Cumbrian elite with a star. The closing expresso was weak and my Balvenie 12 was wrecklessly delivered with a lump of ice but overall an enjoyable fine dining experience and well recommended."

"We went for a lovely meal on Friday evening and ended up going again on Sunday to try out to try out the Sunday lunch menu so I’m going to tell you about both. Friday evening we ordered off the new menu, we had scallops prawns they were both delicious, then all 3 of us had the cod dish from the mains, it was absolutely beautiful fresh fish, could eat it again just thinking about it. They had a live singer singing background music too which was a really lovely touch. The service was fantastic, Josip (the manager) and Samantha were both not only lovely welcoming but both fantastic at their job. So good we booked to go again with my parents on Sunday. We all had different starters but all throughly enjoyed what we had, then it came to the main course, sirloin of beef (we all had the same) I’m usually very disappointed in Sunday lunches mainly because you get overcooked meat potatoes, you can tell they’ve been cooked earlier in the day, anyway not in this case, we were asked how we would like the beef cooking, we all said medium rare that’s exactly what we got, it was delicious, the potatoes were names ‘parmenter’ potatoes, to me they were simply small roast potatoes, they were tasty, crispy on the outside very soft in the middle, the veg was beautiful too, best Sunday lunch I’ve had in a long time (eating out). Again the service was absolutely fantastic (didn’t get the names unfortunately) then the manager Josip started his shift made a point of coming to our to table to greet us. Two wonderful meals, amazing service, will definitely be back soon."

"Popped in on Christmas eve with 7 adults and 2 children after an impromptu Yuletide walk around Aira force. The Inn was fully booked and we were offered a heated booth outside, before staff realised (due to the time we popped in they could re arrange some seatings for a later booking which meant we could indeed sit inside. Which was fabulous as we had accepted the outside booth, inside was much better for our youngest child and meant we could all sit together. We had a designated server for the tables who was very polite, patient and helpful. Food came out extremely quickly (bearing in mind it was also Christmas eve and full to the brim with diners Most of our table had the Sunday lunch and were rather full afterwards. Our disabled son was allowed to order off menu, Toast, which many places don't allow once breakfast is no longer served. Childrens deserts were a little slower to get to the table (as I say the Inn was extremely busy!! They were scrumptious and worth the wait. The decor was lovely and festive. To conclude, a Lovely space, nice and warm, friendly staff, good food, speedy service, free parking! Well worth a visit. Huge thanks to the wonderful team for making our visit so pleasant. Nearby activities: Aira force Ullswater lake Ullswater steamers Horseriding Kayaking Shops Walkability: Lots of good walks around. Food drinks: Food was tasty. Lots of options for alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. My disabled son is fussy with his food, the server allowed him to order off menu. Maximus ordered Toast, he was asked if he would like jam and butter. (Some places won't allow the ordering of toast after breakfast serving is closed"
