"I last reviewed the Red Cow restaurant at the beginning of 2022, when I also gave it an ‘average’ rating – and recently returned for the first time since then. I ordered the ‘Red Cow Burger’, on the menu for £18 and offered with ‘red onion jam, crispy streaky bacon, Emmental cheese, brioche and fries’. The patty tasted less like beef and more like liver – which was a surprise, although the menu description didn’t actually specify the ingredients; so I assumed that it would be beef. I then asked the server which meat was used in the patty, and they replied: “I think it’s beef”. I then told them that it tasted very much like liver to me, so they checked with the chef. After a few minutes, they returned, explaining that the chef was very sorry, but the mince is supplied by a butcher, who ‘sometimes’ adds liver to the mix. This seemed a bit vague. To my chagrin I continued to eat the burger, but wasn’t enjoying it, so gave up after I’d consumed over half of it. I was wondering what other mystery meats the butcher might have thrown-in to ‘enhance’ the flavour and binding properties of the mince (and possibly reduce the cost per weight)? What do you do in this situation? You’re hungry; other people in your party are enjoying their meal, and the menu didn’t specify that the patty included offal – so I felt that I couldn’t send it back and get something else (not that this option was offered by the apologetic server). Before my far from empty plate was cleared, I informed the person who originally took my order that I hadn’t enjoyed what I had eaten of the burger, due to it tasting like liver, and to please let the chef know. They returned, and repeated that the chef was very sorry, but that the mince is supplied by a butcher, who sometimes adds liver to the mix. I thought that at this stage they might offer a dessert, coffee or drink on the house – but they didn’t. The fries were good and the seeded brioche bun was decent, the latter being neither over-soft or too sweet. The servers were courteous, but in my opinion could be better trained in the ingredients of the menu and in customer service. £18 for a beef and liver (and who knows what else) burger and fries is a lot. I didn’t enjoy the experience. The Red Cow should have done better, and it’ll be more than a couple of years before I return there to eat."

"I visited The Railway Inn with 14 others for a Sunday lunch a few days ago. We rarely see one another so it was an occasion for us all. I was immediately greeted by frowns and cold shoulders at the bar when ordering drinks. I let it go. We all have bad days. We then sat for our meals. I had the Beef Dinner. The beef was dry and tough and swamped in a tasteless beige gravy that was literally dribbling off the edges of the plate. It was, sadly, the worst Sunday Lunch I've had. Still, I didn't want to spoil the occasion. When the meal was finished we wanted to sit outside in the large garden. We asked and was given rolled-eyes from the waitress who seemed irritated at our wish to go sit in the sun. Ooookay. I then went back to the bar to order another drink and heard three members of staff, including the very rude and flat-out obnoxious lady pulling pints, moaning loudly about having to sweep the floor near the high-chair we had at our table. The high-chair, of course, had a little toddler in it, and she sadly dropped a few crumbs. How dare she!? Well, they weren't happy. This was an appalling experience from beginning to end. I'm no stranger to poor service. It's a common occurrence, but I think this might just be the worst I've encountered in a long, long time. Food was bad. Service was horrendous. We spent around £350 in food and drinks here on this afternoon, and I wish we'd gone somewhere else. All 15 of us will refrain from visiting this location again, and we urge anyone else considering a nice meal out to find somewhere else to go and enjoy. The beer garden here is a sizeable one, but it isn't worth the rest of the awful stuff just to enjoy a table in a field."

"My friend’s and I all went for a curry last night and we waited 40 minutes for someone to come and take our food order. We then had to wait another 55 minutes for our starter to come out, after ordering. I didn’t order a starter for myself as I know I get very full with just the curry, although I was regretting this now as we waited over an hour and a half for any food to come to the table. 2 hours in, I finally received my first bit of food, which from past dining experience, I’d expect to be leaving the restaurant in that time. I do understand that it was a busy Saturday night, so although I was annoyed, I wasn’t going to make a fuss over. My friend’s and I all paid separately, so when it came to my turn to pay, I kindly asked if the service charge could be taken off, as I didn’t think it was fair to pay this, having waited 2 hours to eat anything. The waiter then told me that everyone has to pay it, I couldn’t take it off, and if I wanted to not pay it, he would just add it onto my friend’s total. He also said the reason it felt like a longer wait, was because we didn’t have poppadoms and starters. My other friend’s did in fact have starters which took an hour and a half to come out and I don’t believe if we don’t order poppadoms, then we should still have to wait the same amount of time as if we were to have them. Although the other waiter’s were nice and we were a table of 7, I don’t believe it was fair to add on a £28 service charge, when the food took that long to come and we had to keep calling people over to take our drinks order. As stated previously, I understand it was a busy Saturday night so I wasn’t going to make a fuss but the fact that we couldn’t then remove the service charge is what has annoyed me. I hope in the future you do allow customers to remove the service charge if they aren’t satisfied with the service, as this is the law. Thanks"
