"Stayed in this hotel and was extremely disappointed. The rooms where extremely dated and dirty. You can smell the old when you first enter the hotel. The carpet leading to the rooms were filthy and totally warn. They have updated the bathroom that's the only nice thing I could say about the whole stay. I had a lovely view of a roof and it felt like i had stepped back into the 1950s! Totally shocking for the price and you will not see me step foot in here again. The bed is a reallly small double and I woke up after a bad night sleep itchy. The amenities are shocking wifi was dreadful and no signal, says fans in room there was no fan in room and the cups are so small you can bearly have a coffee. The service at the restaurant was disgraceful. Abruptly spoke to by the bar maid and she just made us feel like we were a burden. If you are looking for a nice place to stay DO NOT STAY HERE! Also lovely cobwebs above the bed in the light fittings and just overall not clean. I sent my breakfast back after finding a piece of metal in it and the coffee was dreadful, Can I not get a decent coffee in this place also my cutlery was dirty. The breakfast came out it looked fancy on the plate but it was dry and my poached egg was over cooked to the point it was a boiled egg shocking! And loved trying to eat my breakfast whilst not choking on metal having to look at snail trails on the floor. Bork"

"We called here during a staycation in West Tanfield. The Staff were all lovely, very friendly and helpful. The setting was great too, with a local feel to it and good music in the background. There's quite a few choices on the menu but it's quite expensive for bar meals. Some of us had quiche one night and although it tasted ok it was a tiny slice of quiche for just under £14. Served with what tasted like oven chips, and salad garnish and coleslaw which were nice. I had a cheese and chutney sandwich another night and it was very nice , but again expensive at just under £9. Desserts were very nice and I enjoyed a chocolate brownie with ice cream. Drinks were very nice too, with some locally produced brews. I saw someone eating fish and chips and it did look like a substantial portion and looked good. Steak pie is served in a bowl with inches of gravy surrounding it. Served with a very small side dish with a tiny portion of vegetables and a few chips. Portion sizes seem to vary depending on what you order. A bowl of chips was a substantial portion. The bar has a lovely atmosphere and Staff are very nice. We didn't visit the beer garden because the weather wasn't good. I would definitely return for drinks but maybe not food. West Tanfield itself has a good nature reserve and at this time of year there's masses of blackberry bushes. Not too far away is the lovely little village of Bedale. A fantastic hidden gem with the best high street I've ever seen. Loads of independent shops selling at reasonable prices and lots of great coffee shops, cafes and restaurants."

"We've been wanting to try The Vale of York since it was taken over so we decided to go for dinner on a Wednesday evening. We were greeted by a friendly lady who got us our drinks, we asked to put them on the bill as we were eating but were told we had to pay straight away as they don't do bills. We chose our meals and also had to pay straightaway. Our meals arrived quickly and all looked very nice. My husband had the vale burger which he said the bread bun was stale or it had been defrosted in the microwave so was hard, the inside burger and salad were very good. My daughter had lasagna which she said was nice. I had hunters chicken. I was a little confused and disappointed as it was just a chicken breast covered in melted cheese woth a bitbof bacon. No BBQ sauce under or over the cheese which is what hunters chicken is supposed to be. The chicken was dry and hard around the outside too. We had desserts ....choc brownie x 2 one with a scoop of ice-cream and one with cream , no effort had gone into presentstion at all, and 1 brandie snap basket filled with one scoop of ice-cream. A few blueberries and strawberries. They definitely were not worth the £6 each price and wish we hadn't bothered. Considering the most expensive thing on the menu is chateaubriand at £65 the puddings would be an embarrassment if served after having that. Our total bill including drinks was £66.50. I know things have gone up, but you expect the food to be excellent in a pub that also serves an expensive menu. The food was almost average. We definitely won't be going again which is a shame as it's our local and we like to eat out regularly."
