"Sister in-law had reserved 2 rooms for one night stay for myself and my husband on 3rd July 2019, received usual confirmation email informing checking in/out and serving meals times, etc. We arrived around 6.30 pm and spoke to a lady of the waiting staff to let her know we would be having an evening meal, she told us they didn 't have any tables after 7pm as they were expecting a large crowd of 30 people at 7pm, we were told we could eat but we had to order now, before 7pm as we hadn 't booked a table. Nothing in the confirmation email mentions anything about having to book a table!!! The Lion Inn is located in a rural location and not knowing the area it wasn 't going to be easy to find a place nearby to go for a meal, we were unhappy and left very frustrated after hearing this, we had driven just over a hundred miles and all we wanted was a quiet place for the night and a decent meal. We were being rushed by the lady to make a fast decision there and then to order our food so under such pressure, we decided to go along with it and went to our rooms to leave our bags and rushed to the bar to order our meals. However, not happy with situation as couldn 't shower and get changed before the meal as we had planned, we then asked to speak to the manager as we felt penalised, after all it wasn 't our fault we hadn 't booked a table, the email only stipulated: 'meals are served between 5pm and 9pm '. We thought the manager might be able to help out by allowing more time for us to get ready before the meal. A male manager came and we explained, unfortunately, his body language clearly showed us right from the start he was not interested at all, as soon as I started to explain, he crossed his arms and leaned on the back of one of the pub chairs, he kept looking at me with a very unpleasant expression of disdain on his face the whole time while I was explaining, he made us all feel very uncomfortable. When I went quiet waiting to hear his response, and still in his crouched posture, he answered: Is that all, anything else? And what do you want me to do about it? I replied, he should know what to do, he answered: The only thing I can do for you is to refund you your £2 reservation fee and just go and find another place where to stay! We couldn 't believe what we were hearing, told him found his response, whole attitude and body language extremely rude for somebody in his position and that I most likely would write a review, he shrugged his shoulders and just walked away and left us without even saying one single word of an apology! This manager lacks all the skills required to perform his job appropriately with customers, he didn 't like being told he had been inconceivable rude. We found his treatment incredibly disrespectful and totally unacceptable. WE WILL NEVER, EVER GO BACK! Needless to say, after being treated so badly we couldn 't stay and we left, we were fortunate to find a lovely hotel 6 miles away, where all staff were very polite, they made us feel very welcome."

"First visit to this restaurant and I’m sorry to say it’ll probably be the last which is a shame as it has the potential to be a fantastic establishment. My wife and I arrived with friends on a Saturday evening for a much looked forward to meal, only to be greeted by a very standoffish waiter and a dining room (the bistro lit brighter than a night match at Wembley stadium. After my retinas had got over the assault I was presented with what I first assumed was an old folks home only to be told that this was where we were eating. (Very disappointed to find out there was no bingo! The menu was great but unfortunately every dish came with a huge dollop of unasked for salt. I’d like to say that the waiter came over to enquire how the meal was but he didn’t. I’d also like to say that I was able to quench my now raging thirst with some delicious wine but we weren’t offered the wine list at any point despite a big deal being made of the wine cellar in the hotel description. We all finished our meals feeling quite disappointed and after a very brief discussion as to wether we should say something to the waiter we decided we were all far to British to cause a fuss and just wanted to pay the bill and leave. On payment in the reception we all noticed that the waiter seemed to be double checking to make sure that we’d actually paid the bill and not done a runner adding to a general feeling of feeling very unwelcome."
