"We are visiting after having a look at a few options, we decided to visit Ambleside fish chip shop. Parking was pretty straightforward as we arrived someone’s was leaving. However, it may be difficult to park during busier times. We arrived approximately 6pm they close at 7pm. The views across the waterfront were just amazing! That was one of the reasons we chose to drive 35 minutes to it. We ordered 1 classic (Reg Fish Chips, mushy peas can of pop £13.90) 1 Large (Fish Chips w’ gravy can of pop £14.90) I shared with one daughter my husband shared with our other daughter. Portion sizes are quite decent. There’s seating outside (best option) or inside. We chose outside. The only downside is those pesky birds that scavenge your food. They didn’t bother us too much but please don’t feed them or they all hover around. Which is off putting. The chips were my favourite 8.5/10 as we had a lot of crispy chips unsure if it’s because they were about to close. I usually love mushy peas but they were 4/10. Not mushy at all, slightly cold. The fish was 7/10. We have definitely had better elsewhere, however the staff were pleasant we put it down to “they had a long day”. Hopefully if you go at a peak time everything will be fresh, the chips will be non crunchy hot! A couple we sat next to threw away all their fish chips but they never complained which I thought was odd a shame as I’m sure the staff could have resolved it. All in all, I would recommend going 8/10 as I think our one-off experience can be rectified."

"Bit of a mixed review. We stayed here last night, after walking the 25km Keswick to Langdale section of the Cumbria way. We are not pro-hikers and we were aiming to get to the Hotel at 7pm, as we thought the kitchen would probably shut at 8pm or 9pm. The hike took us longer than expected (walking with our kids), and even though we practically ran the last kilometre we arrived at 8:05pm. We asked if we could still get any food and the chef brusquely told us the kitchen shut at 8pm, but there were bar snacks (crisps). I honestly nearly cried!! We were all exhausted and starving. There are no shops nearby and we didn’t have a car. I know we were late but a bit of compassion would have gone a long way. I wasn’t expecting the whole menu, given that we were late but perhaps some chips or an offer of a sandwich? Genuinely I’m the kind of person who tends to leave 5 star reviews. But this ruined the stay for me. In its favour, the location is amazing, the rooms were fine, the breakfast was good and the staff were on the whole friendly and helpful. The bar man was really good to the kids, giving them flapjack on the house. But for me, the total lack of empathy was pretty unforgivable. Response to management reply: Just to say that we absolutely were trying to ring ahead, but we had zero reception on the hills. I agree and understand that the kitchen staff should only work until the end of their shift. However, I would respectfully suggest that some sort of back up cold food service (e.g. sandwiches) could be put in place by management for this type of situation. I’m sure the reception team or the barman could be trained to provide this. It really would have made the world of difference to us. If you are running a hotel in the middle of a city, there’s less need for this, but I think it’s pretty essential hospitality for a walkers hotel in the middle of the Lake District with no comms or shops nearby. I think it would have been less awkward for the chef too, if he had a decent alternative to be able to point us at. I understand he was tired and at the end of his shift, so I don’t blame him for being abrupt. It could so easily have been a great experience, with just a little bit of flexibility and I would have been so grateful for it. Please consider making a change."

"Knowing we’d be in Coniston on New Year’s Day (2 adults and 2 children) I booked online at the Yewdale in early Dec to make sure we secured a table, anticipating it might be busy. On arrival we were met by a pleasant waiter who showed us to our reserved table in the mostly empty pub. We were slightly disappointed, having booked a table, to be in the bar area next to a big group of young men who were swearing quite a bit and acting generally laddish. Some of the talk was not something I wanted my daughter who is 7, to hear. Thankfully she was entertained by the colouring menu sheet that was kindly supplied. To be honest I thought we be put in the restaurant bit given we’d booked in advance (the bar reserved for walk ins) but it appeared closed until we were leaving about 6.30pm. Anyway we got on with it as we do as we’re not fussy and there was another family with children there too. Our second disappointment was the big sign saying ‘sorry no pizza today’. Pizza was an option for us and something we were looking forward to having visited in the summer, so this was disappointing. I’d have thought if they weren’t offering pizza they should have told us in advance through the booking system or indicated online. This reduced the menu by 50%. We ordered from the main menu and children’s menu. The children’s fish and chips was excellent and I can’t complain, it was one of the best fish I’ve seen in a child’s menu. The adults lasagne was clearly homemade and tasted ok. Better than it looked . But at 15 I’d have expected it to come with chips not just a bit of garlic bread. Or chips should have been an add on for a couple of given the size of it but they were 4.50 on top. All a bit pricey for what it was and the portion size. The biggest disappointment was the fish pie. I was looking forward to haddock, smoked haddock, salmon and prawns as indicated on the menu. Instead I basically got a bit of haddock (well white fish), a load of spinach, and some cheese mash. No sign of the prawns, smoked salmon or haddock. The buttered greens it came with were leek and green beans and filled half the plate! We didn’t stop for dessert and opted for a chocolate bar at the petrol station instead given how disappointed we were with the mains. Beer selection was good and no issues there and staff were pleasant and attentive. We will probably visit again for pizza but the pub food overall was a let down."

"I recently visited here during a weekend break in Kirkby Lonsdale and I was left extremely disappointed. I tried to book a table for around 8.30 9.00 but was told I could only have a table at 8.00. When I arrived I was asked to sit in the bar until my table was ready which was fairly quick as I was 5/10 mins early. I found the menu to be slightly disappointing and not very Italian inspired despite the name. My order was taken and my starter didn't arrive until around 8.45 which annoyed me slightly as I wanted to book a table later and wasn't able to. (By now the restaurant was almost empty). The garlic bread was lovely but the garlic mushrooms was smothered in pesto ??? The main courses were a complete disappointment once again the chicken pasta was smothered in pesto, probably to hide the fact that it was tasteless and only two pieces of chicken in the whole dish. The carbonara was all curdled. Rather than a smooth sauce it was all lumpy and separated. No black pepper or Parmesan offered. The portion sizes were decent and the fries were lovely. When letting the staff know how disappointed I was with the meal I didn't receive so much as an apology and they quickly asked us for the money and we left. I would definitely not visit here again. Apart from the appalling food I found that I wasn't treated how all the other customers in the restaurant were. This was my wedding anniversary treat and it was far from it!!!"
