"Ended a weeks stay in the Trossachs by booking a special evening out. Did my research and found Callendar meadows had lots of amazing reviews so went with that. We chose from a set menu good choices which also catered well for vegetarians. So glad we went. Every course was (home) cooked, using fresh seasonal ingredients and each meal was faultless. We started with homemade bread, olives and hummus have to mention these were unusually good olives. We chose asparagus panna cotta and chicken live parfait as starters, which tasted as good as they looked both presented beautifully. Soup was carrot and orange , brought in a pretty teacup, with garlic croutons, a swirl of creme fraiche and chopped chives the best carrot soup we’ve ever had. For our main courses, we chose baked cod with cheese topping and bean stuffed red pepper. Again, both cooked to perfection, hugely tasty and delicious accompaniments. Puddings again were such well thought out dishes we had a mango mousse and bread&butter pudding thought to just name them is to understate their quality in terms of flavour, freshness and presentation. As well as the food, the dining room needs a mention. Beautiful front room in a beautiful house (also a B&B though we weren’t staying). The atmosphere was relaxed even though we felt we were dining so well. Some diners were dressed up, some dressed more relaxed all felt right and comfortable. Around 7 or 8 tables in all ensured a personal, friendly service . I can’t end this review without mentioning Theo. He was working alongside the owner, and seemingly being trained along the way. He was absolutely lovely and has the makings of a very good waiter/server/host friendly, attentive, just nicely confident, able to provide detail as of food when asked etc. Many thanks to the whole team, we had a truly wonderful evening with you. If we return to the area, we will absolutely be returning to Callander Meadows."

"Family out for Sunday lunch, one requiring a gluten free meal. We were assured that the grouse on the specials menu was gluten free, so two of us ordered this and we ordered two portions of seasonal veg as extras. The grouse came with a jug of thick white blob, which we were later advised was bread sauce, not mentioned on the menu and clearly not gluten free. The vegetables had thick strands of noodles mixed through them (none of us had ordered noodles . When I complained to the waiter, he took my bowl to ask the chef, before returning with the same bowl saying that the chef said not to worry as they were just stray rice noodles! The waiter was clearly being left to take any flak, so I followed him to the till, to find the manager and chef in the bar. The manager basically said that it was a small kitchen, so you have to expect some cross-contamination (2-inch bits of noodle?! , while the chef brushed it off as just a schoolboy error . (If I 'd wanted my lunch cooked by a schoolboy... Neither the manager nor the chef appeared to grasp the seriousness of serving contaminated food, with the manager repeatedly assuring me that the ingredients were gluten free. Restaurant owners must understand that to label a dish as gluten free , or any allergen free or even NGCI (no gluten-containing ingredients , they are not just saying that they did not intend to include the allergen, but that they had taken measures to prevent contamination by the allergen. Clearly, serving a jug full of the allergen (as happened here is dangerous, but so is having such poor kitchen practices that different meals on the menu get mixed together. Our meal was cut short, as we could not trust any of the dishes to be gluten free; in fact we could not trust any of the dishes to be just what the menu said they were."
