"On arrival we were warmly and professionally greeted after a nearly three hour drive from London , due to heavy traffic and diversions Not having eaten since breakfast, and arriving mid afternoon. Instead of unpacking, we went straight to the lounge area to order drinks...and a snack On attempting to order a sandwich, latte and tea we were told that as the lunch service finished at 3pm only scones or cakes were available! The waiter then left to bring our drinks When he returned he confirmed that no sandwiches were available and repeated the offer of scones and cake We asked him to ask the Chef , he returned to say that the Chef had said no! We were shocked and asked for the Manager We told him that surely in a luxury 5Star hotel it must be possible to organise a sandwich. He also repeated what the waiter had said We asked if the kitchen had, bread, butter, cheese, eggs, smoked salmon and he said that it did We said in that case a sandwich could be made, He went away and a few minutes later the sandwich appeared The hotel, a refurbished inn , has been extensively modernised and extended in excellent taste and forms part of the POLIZZI COLLECTION Our suite was tastefully decorated , very bright, with windows on two sides No bedroom mirror was provided. Most unusual and badly thought out. The bath again was of a good size, but badly let down by the very poor quality EU made, hard towels. The bathroom accessories were made by Bramley , a Wiltshire based company The two sink units were functional with no drawers or storage space Housekeeping similarly seemed to lack direction or oversight, as after our room was cleaned , one hand towel was not replaced . For many guests the highlight of a visit is Dinner and Breakfast Our Dinner on our first night was almost like an episode from the Fawlty Towers television series. There was no evidence of any managerial oversight Whilst we were promptly shown to our table, the rest of the evening went downhill Sparkling water was ordered, after ten minutes tap water arrived and we said to the waitress that we had ordered sparkling water to which she replied “ oh , did you?” She then went away to fetch it Whilst other tables were served bread as soon as they were seated, we were not We had to ask a passing waiter and waited several minutes for it to arrive The Manager, Edward , who had organised the afternoon sandwich had shown us to table, but that was the last that we saw of him until we sought to query and pay our bill The menu was limited to say the least Four choices for each of the three courses! The choice of vegetables was even more limited , with only boiled Anya Potatoes, as a potato choice I had an excellent vegetable minestrone to start, followed by a totally inedible uncooked veal escalope and a green salad, comprising mainly radicchio and just a few lettuce leaves. I sent it back pointing out that under the cooked breadcrumb coating there was a layer of fat which did not permit the veal to be cooked. Instead of the escalope being flattened to allow cooking , it had not and when the replacement escalope arrived the waitress said that she had “ re-cooked it” On clarification we were told that what she had said was “ verbiage” and that she actually meant to have said “ replaced” Unfortunately, it was just as inedible as the first offering and left uneaten. The waiting staff were totally inattentive, and walked past without looking at the seated diners to notice if anyone required anything It was perhaps one of the worst main course meals I had ever eaten My wife’s fish dish was excellent On seeking to pay our bill the inedible veal dish was charged for .The Manager reappeared and being confronted , hastily removed the charge and presented another but reduced bill. Matters were made worse by the fact that we had booked eight months earlier and we were looking forward to a really super three night stay at what we thought would a 5 Star luxury hotel, we were mistaken The Breakfast was tasty , well presented and served with a good choice of hot dishes The self service buffet was mediocre to say the least Very poor selections No cheeses, no charcuterie, no breads, no butter, one pot of jam, a bowl of various mini croissants, several dishes of tinted fruits, a plate of fresh oranges, blood oranges and figs well presented. 5 STAR, NO WAY The serving staff, a different team from the night before, save for the lead waiter, were charming , attentive, helpful and smiled The lead Italian waiter who served at Dinner also served at the Breakfast sitting was superb! If only the others were trained like him. Edward , the Manager was not seen. This hotel is a prime example of style over substance The raison d’etre of the hospitality industry is to provide its guests with great experiences and above all, value for money This hotel with very poor management, insufficient staff training , and limited menu lacks in every case. A so called 5 Star hotel should have a more extensive Dinner menu or if seeking to save on costs with the current limited menu , at least offer one“ Daily Special “ for each course, especially with regard to locally grown seasonal vegetables Unfortunately, a very expensive forgettable experience NOT to repeated and certainly not to be recommended. I am sure that the Hotel Inspector would have written in her hotel report” room for improvement, could do much better “"

"Now I always give a constructive and fair review when dining out as I think it’s important to make business’ aware of where they’ve done well and where there needs to be improvement. We weren’t booked in (not that this should make any difference) and found a table outside, several waiting staff walked back and forth outside until we eventually asked to see menus. We ordered a mixture of coffees and food, breakfast items, and paninis. The coffees came fairly promptly and were very good, as was the smoothie. The food took a long time to come out, as if we had been a little bit forgotten about. But eventually arrived unfortunately in two parts, with mine arriving last and the servers disappearing we were unable to feedback at the time. I waited for a check back which didn’t materialise either, which is a shame as there was about 5 or 6 staff behind the till and only a couple looking after tables. Which left the little important bits missed. We had to then clear our own coffees from the table and weren’t offered any more. It would appear there’s no service outside. Which isn’t an issue but explaining this would make life easier. The food had obviously been sat for a while before it came out as the toast was hard and apart from the microwaved beans everything was cold. Also left the stalks on the tomatoes? And a fairly small portion all together in all fairness. Others enjoyed their food at the table and gave good feedback. However with the lack of service and cold food I could only award an average unfortunately. I’ll probably stick to the coffee barn in future, for around the same sort of price much better service. Made to feel a lot more welcome and looked after when you sit outside!"

"I had written the glowing review below on Friday and decided to revisit on Sunday. I’ve now marked down from a 5/5 review due to the poor experience on Sunday: I went to the counter and began to place my order, starting with Welsh rarebit...for my co-eater. The older (usually quite flustered) lady taking my order turned round and looked at the clock over her shoulder, which read 2:40pm. She then looked back at me with a pained expression on her face, as if expecting me to interpret her meaning. I enquired if it was too late for hot food (it can only take a few minutes to grill a few slices of cheese on a piece of bread to which she replied, “it is getting on a bit, yes”. There was no note that we had seen on the menu, no apology, just that she wasn’t willing to prepare hot food. We left and I phoned a few minutes later, to ask if there was a hot food cut off time. I’m sure I spoke to the same lady, who told me the cut off time was now, to which I asked if there was a set time listed on the menu; she replied 3pm, but they had run out of everything (even bread and cheese? and so had stopped serving hot food for the day. She made no mention of this to me when I tried to place the order! On the plus side, there is now the option of paying by card, but you must first be allowed to place an order! * Green Fingers Cafe is a hidden gem in the heart of the Ashdown Forest; we only discovered it via TripAdvisor! It is more of a nursery than a commercialised garden centre and it even has resident cats! The cafe itself is housed in a small wooden hut, which is cosy and decked out with homewares which are for sale. The menu is quite extensive for a little place and has a specials blackboard too. A wide variety of items feature, such as sausage and beans jacket potato and very reasonably priced ice cream sundaes. In fact, the only thing that seems to be missing is ice cream milkshakes. The service was prompt and friendly but the slight downside is that payment seems to be by cash only. We paid around £12 for a luxury hot chocolate (so impressive I wish I'd taken a photo a slice of treacle tart and a cream tea for one. The cream tea consisted of a large, warmed, soft fruit scone, a tray with butter, jam and cream and a 3 cup teapot with hot water and milk jugs and was presented beautifully. My co-eater said the scone was excellent, which is high praise indeed! The hot chocolate was not too sweet, despite the mountain of cream and marshmallows (and bonus marshmallows hidden under the cream However, the main draw had to be the treacle tart, which must be the biggest slice served in Sussex!! The photo doesn't really do it justice, but it must have been approaching 2 deep and 4 wide at the crust! I chose to have mine served warm with custard and ice cream (just in case my blood sugar level wasn't high enough after the hot chocolate). The tart was delicious; very sweet but tempered nicely by the ice cream, with light pastry. Whilst we were eating, we saw someone's order of quiche, which looked delicious and enormous, so we'll definitely be returning to try more of the menu!"

"This restaurant had recently been in the local papers for employing illegal staff so we were a little reticent. We visited this restaurant on saturday night as the other Chinese and Thai were fully booked (at 6.30pm . Service was slow and staff were not very attentative-busy on mobiles and counter around the corner so customers in this sectio were overlooked. It all felt strange when we arrived a sthere was not one member of staff who was Chinese but that shouldn 't matter-one would think. The food came up some on hot plates, some on not so hot. There was a main plate on the table-which I assumed was for proportioning spoonfuls of the dishes and to eat from. This plate was on the table when we arrived so was also stone cold. There were no table warmers but the food did taste good. As we had over-ordered, i requested that we take the 'left-overs ' away.when we finished. The first waiter took most of htis away and another waitress removerd the rest. The request to have 'doggie-bags ' was also relayed to her. We had a feeling that this was not going as should as the waiter did not apear to understand English or was inexpereinced-couldn 't make sure what the issue was . The waitress returned with just the rice and we asked about the other dishes where she went off with what was the obvious situation as anticipated. As no-one cam eback immediatley, I went to the counter to pay the bill and overheard what was the obvious situation. I part paid the bill and left without a snack for the following day but £10 better off. (The cheek of it was that they had automatically added a 10% service charge! . It is a pity that attention to detail was not taken as the food tasted good and it was quite comfortable. Maybe this is the reason the other two were fully booked and we were able to get a table!"

"Booked for a surprise birthday meal with the family. Chose Giggles as had driven past many times, looked appealing and knew they host weddings on their grounds as such thought it was safe bet for a good meal! The Caribbean twist was also different which appealed. We went on a Sunday we all ordered different meals, the birthday boy man ordered a steak as a treat which was described as sirloin steak with all the trimmings and peppercorn sauce, I ordered a beef burger with cheese and father in law ordered the beef roast. Other family members opted for the carribean choices such as the curry goat and vegetable curry. The starters were lovely and we were looking forward to the mains. Sadly they were very disappointing. My burger tasted very cheap. It had gristle throughout and the burger bun was a dry sesame seed topped burger bap which fell apart when picking up the burger. There was Mayo and tomato ketchup inside it and the American cheese slice which I normally love, but altogether I honestly did not enjoy it. I would rather have eaten a McDonald’s quarter pounder! The coleslaw was watery cabbage and onion. My husbands steak, which he had ordered to be medium rare, was over cooked and very chewy. There was half a grilled tomato on top, some chips, some salad leaves and a pot of watery coleslaw. We had to ask for the peppercorn sauce which came out and did not taste peppery… my husband joked as he seasoned his food that he was just adding some pepper to his peppercorn sauce. I felt so bad as I had picked the place to eat!! we wondered where the other half of the tomato had gone and where the onion rings, mushrooms etc that you normally would get with a £19.50 steak had gone also. My sister in law and brother in law had the Caribbean options and they were positive about them. My father in law had the roast beef and again was very positive about this. So it is not all negative. Overall I would not recommend unless your whole party opts for a roast on a Sunday. The car wash there was brilliant. Did a very good job. Do have a nice play area for the kids so worth a Visit if you are just fancying an afternoon drink or light lunch with the family."
