"I love quirky old fashioned pubs and the Smugglers ticked all the boxes. That’s as good as it got. As I alone after walking 155 mile across the South Downs I opted along to Ye Olde Smugglers on a very quiet Saturday night, just a hand full of local Sat in the window holding court, I patiently waited at the bar while the young couple In Front of me were being served, they we disappointed to find out that the kitchen had closed to 7:30, so decided to just have a drink while the locals directed them onto other establishments in the village. I walked up to the bar and asked the young lady for a “red bull” something to boost my energy after that 15 mile walk around the South Downs, her reaction was somewhat baffling, very kurt as she looked me up and down in disgust ..”we don’t do that here” Try the George” she then turned her back to me, I approached the bar to request and alternative but to no avail she kept her back well truly to the wall. I felt somewhat scalding like a school boy whom had done something wrong, The young couple next to me were equally as embarrassed as I. I happenned to project to the young server i I’ll some whiting else. But she ignorged, I projected in a loud voice “well this is awkward”, I only wanted a drink” to which which she barked “told you The George” As a Man on his early 50’s I’ve never come across such blatant rudeness, this girl clearly do not go to charm school and should most Definatley should not be in hospitality. Having thought about my experience it was clear why the place was empty and The George, The Star and The 6 Bells were all bustling and needlesless to say very accommodating.. I happened to meet quite a few locals in the 6 bells whom filled me in with how the locals feel about the place. Should a shame for such a wonderful building I along obviously with lots of other patrons who don’t like to be treated rudely, shall not be returning. I would suggest serving that server with immediate affect.."

"Had lunch here with parents and was very disappointed. It has really gone down hill. The whole place looks rundown and shabby and dirty. A refurbishment would give it a new lease of life. The ladies toilets were grotty, dirty grouting around sink and dirt on floor and unpleasant smell. The welcome was non existent by the manager or barman behind the bar. Could barely be bothered to speak. I said we had come here for my father in laws 91st birthday and he just didn’t respond. The table was old and worn and sticky and chairs very old and worn out. Could do with updating the furniture. There were cobwebs and dust on the dried out faded hops on the ceiling. The menu was a bit uninspiring but ok. My mum was disappointed by the garlic chicken Kiev. no garlic butter inside just in a jug and the green beans were very hard and inedible. I had the turkey which was ok but a mean portion of vegetable for two people so had to ask for another portion. The meat in the steak and kidney pie was also chewy and tough. My parents had a dessert. The crumble was lovely and hot and came with custard but the crème brûlée cheesecake was a mean portion considering it was £7. I think the desserts were over priced. We gave the waitress a tip as she was very good and cheerful and friendly but when we left we walked right past the manager and he didn’t even say thank you or goodbye. Such a shame as nice location and nice building. We will not be returning."

"Had a wonderful experience after booking through Secret escapes. We paid £210 for a night's stay, a cream tea for two, 3 course dinner and breakfast and it was worth every penny and more! The service in the hotel is without doubt some the best...we've every had. The food is incredible! The hotel is sublime, we stayed in the garden suite which was immaculate, it has direct access to the hotel grounds from living room. The cream tea is freshly cooked scones, clotted cream and jam with bottomless tea or coffee, you can also have hot chocolate if you like. This is not Afternoon tea but I guess if you wanted to up grade to this you can. The cream tea was more than enough for us and very tasty. We had the 3 course dinner at 8pm and if we wanted wecould have sat in the drawing room for drinks first and to look over the menu but we were happy to just take our seats in the dining room. There is a set menu and on first looking we didn't think we'd like any of the food on it and or it was anything special how wrong were we!!! We had ordered wine and this came with canapés which were divine, I personally don't normally eat any fish dishes and one of the canapés was trout, I tried it and it was delicious! The tagine starter with freshly cooked rolls and butter was super. The chicken breast main was incredible and the pudding was great also had a cheese board again fantastic. The weather was not great but we did get a chance walk the grounds for 30 minutes which are beautiful and wished we could stayed out there longer. The sleep and room was superb and got up to an excellent full English. We 100% recommend this as a superb overnight get away 5star service with Michelin Star food."
