"A typical nice English village pub with a friendly reception. In England over from the Netherlands and staying in the area, we decide to eat dinner at the Merrie Harriers on our day of arrival. .. The first thing we noticed was, the table was very sticky, which indicated it wasn 't cleaned very well, however we still stayed to eat. The Cod Chips were ok, however the chips weren 't really crispy. The 'wholetail ' scampi were NOT wholetail.. they just a battered squares of what looked like a factory item out of a box (and definitely no tails). .. However we still decided to give the Merrie Harriers a second try the next day. We took a different table but that was also very sticky, so we decide then we 'd not come back again. This time I tried the Pie of the Day .. however that was not really a good choice. It wasn 't really a real pie, it was just a wedge out of bigger pie heated up. The problem there is, apart from the bit of outer crust, there wasn 't much of a pie over .. it was more a homogenous piece of splodge. My wife 's Seabass was OK but quite small. I 'm afraid it looks like they try to charge the maximum price for the minimum of cost. We sure didn 't think we got value for money at the Merrie Harriers. A shame, we 'd hoped for better. .. However this feeling was the same at almost every pub we went to in England this trip. I 'm afraid English pubs are not showing their better side any more. (the White Horse at Catsfield was an exception) .. Being back in England for the first time since before Covid, we were AMAZED at the increase in prices. The food drink (everywhere) was 30-40% higher than 4 years earlier and at can 't be justified by increases in the cost of material/power, which only make up a small percentage of the total cost. It looks like English pubs are now profiteering. We used to come to England every year for a week golfing, however we now think that will not continue. Other countries give a better value for money now than England."

"Had a wonderful experience after booking through Secret escapes. We paid £210 for a night's stay, a cream tea for two, 3 course dinner and breakfast and it was worth every penny and more! The service in the hotel is without doubt some the best...we've every had. The food is incredible! The hotel is sublime, we stayed in the garden suite which was immaculate, it has direct access to the hotel grounds from living room. The cream tea is freshly cooked scones, clotted cream and jam with bottomless tea or coffee, you can also have hot chocolate if you like. This is not Afternoon tea but I guess if you wanted to up grade to this you can. The cream tea was more than enough for us and very tasty. We had the 3 course dinner at 8pm and if we wanted wecould have sat in the drawing room for drinks first and to look over the menu but we were happy to just take our seats in the dining room. There is a set menu and on first looking we didn't think we'd like any of the food on it and or it was anything special how wrong were we!!! We had ordered wine and this came with canapés which were divine, I personally don't normally eat any fish dishes and one of the canapés was trout, I tried it and it was delicious! The tagine starter with freshly cooked rolls and butter was super. The chicken breast main was incredible and the pudding was great also had a cheese board again fantastic. The weather was not great but we did get a chance walk the grounds for 30 minutes which are beautiful and wished we could stayed out there longer. The sleep and room was superb and got up to an excellent full English. We 100% recommend this as a superb overnight get away 5star service with Michelin Star food."

"We arrived on Friday evening at about 7.15 pm hoping for dinner. We were immediately greeted by the young lady behind the bar, who said that of course we could have dinner. Actually, it became obvious that there was no problem as there wasn 't anybody else in the dining section. When we commented on the lack of diners, she rather strangely said that there were usually more customers for dinner during the week than the weekends. We wondered why? There is a good pub menu and I went for the haddock pie and he decided on bangers and mash. The dining section is quirkily decorated, which is rather nice, but there does not appear to be any heating, and we were a bit chilly. The food looked good on arrival, and the chef obviously knows how to do things properly, in that there was hard boiled egg in the fish pie and the bangers came with an extra small jug of gravy. I was hoping for a lovely creamy fish pie with real mashed potatoes and fresh veg, and he was hoping for lovely sausages and real mashed potatoes. But the pie was really very dry and not very taseful, and although his sausages were delicious (locally sourced) we both thought that the mash was probably smash i.e. out of a packet. Since we had not much enjoyed the main course, we thought we would try puddings, and I ordered the sticky toffee pudding and he had apple crumble. His crumble was good, and the sticky toffee sauce was OK, but poured over a very ordinary piece of sponge. The wine per glass is very reasonably priced which is perhaps why there is nothing very special about it. There have been other reviews praising the food, but we were disappointed. . Some parts of the evening were good, but other parts were definitely not hence my title. If the food had not been so dry, we would have added another star."

"I went with my partner for Christmas dinner after b12, I received a text from them asked me to confirm to answer was £2 so I didn't bother when they knew we had booked and paid. the starter was a little strange. pictorial, that tasted bitter, I wasn't at all fan of it. then I had a canine ravioli as an appetizer, that was divine and I would fortunately have eaten much more than at all. then we had a herring, with an eastern European inheritance and my mother tried to eat me hering at several places, I knew I would not like to as it is not to my taste and I am especially about seafood, I tried a little and dislike it, my partner loved it and had mine too. we had a sorbet between the curses. the truthahn porn was all in order I didn't like the taste of the chipolata sausage, but my partner did that part was quite large with a lot of go veg, so was filling. for dessert I had the chocolate parfait that was beautiful and I enjoyed it, I didn't like the Beetroot ice cream that accompanied it, which was just strange. I think it could have worked if it had white chocolate in it or crumb with it, but on its own it did not work for me. the cheeses were a good choice and there was a black cheese that was particularly delicious. the service was police and efficient. overall we enjoyed the experience, there were some highlights like the rabbit ravioli, and the chocolate parrot, some things that were in order, and some things that were simply not on my taste. we would go back, yes I think we would and I would mainly go back when Hasen-Ravioli was on the menu."

"Went on Saturday 30 7, ive never liked the layout and building room of this restaurant but went few years ago so thought would try again. Apart from being quite dirty, cobwebs and generally unkept the main issue was all we could hear all night was the chef turned out to be owner) ranting and raving all night and that the food was pretty much inedible. It was very quiet with only 5 other people eating. Everything took an absolute age to arrive. My wife always says i don 't complain or give enough feedback so i thought i should. Tried to speak to one lady and she just said i should speak with owner who was the chef. He and a young waitress were very rude and didn 't want to listen and then went on to tell me they were 2 staff down and had a lot of takeaway orders. I said i understood i do, i have been in hotel hospitality business my whole career). I said if you can not deliver a reasonable level of service and food then you should not open. The chef owner was a walking health hazard also, he was sweating so much it made feel sick that he had prepared our food and his chef jacket was the most disgusting thing i had ever seen. He asked me what i wanted to do, i offered to pay for wine. They then said the whole of Uckfield internet was down so cash only, clearly not true. I went to get cash and when i returned the young waitress shouted to the owner oh look Gordon Ramsey 's back , well that just made the worse experience ever even worse, i gave them £30 to cover wine and cost of food, they didn 't deserve this really. The whole industry is struggling to find people at present but they also have an obligation to offer quality food and service and if they can 't then they as i said they should close."
