"We rendezvoused with a local friend at the Altberliner Restaurant, which had been established by Margot Honecker, wife of East Germany’s leader from 1971 to 1989, to show visiting foreign dignitaries traditional German cooking. Since it was a lovely evening, we sat outside, but I did explore the interior. Done in medium-dark wood with identically framed etchings of Berlin landmarks decorating the walls, the restaurant had a restrained, timeless feel, as if might have looked the same in 1930, if it had existed then. I could imagine a Communist Chinese or Cuban dignitary being impressed by the sense of authenticity, as well as the lack of extravagance.Since the menu declared that Wednesday was Schnitzel Night, all of us ordered versions of the classic breaded cutlets in either pork or veal versions. I chose pork with pfefferlings (chanterelles). My husband had pork jaeger style, which entailed mushrooms in a light cream sauce. The dishes were tasty, the portions abundant."

Dropped by, we were 16 people - no problem. We all had soup - Goulash and potato - hot and really tasty. Reasonable prices, nice food.

Delicious meal. Friendly service. We popped in here for lunch after a walking tour. No issues, definitely worth a stop if you're hungry

Bad experience with service. Ended up leaving and going elsewhere. There seem to be a lot of great places in Berlin. This is not one of them.

We were recommended this restaurant by a waitress in our hotel and we were not disappointed. The Wiener Schnitzel was perfect and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Ver carta

Real German atmosphere. Waiter spoke perfect English. We were only Americans in restaurant. Great beer. Had rare roast beef piled high on fresh made herb waffle, with baby greens salad. Total Bill was under $25.

Obviously A place frequented by locals. They were accommodating to our English-speaking family. Lovely place to sit across the park from the flea market. Nice food and we felt that we were having a reasonably authentic experience

If you want to eat german, do it properly. This restaurant had all the typical dishes and knows how to cook them...schnitzels are amazing, especially the wienar, kaiserschmann is also available. Nothing fancy, just good huge portions of german style food. I recommend it, the...More Ver carta

This was the last bar we visited during our city break. We started with a light pilsner and then we saw these goblets being served of green or red beer. We asked the friendly jurgen klopp lookalike barman what they were and he said they were a berlin speciality so we ordered one and they tasted fab -a bit like a kopparberg fruit cider only in beer form. The barman couldn't do enough for us and was happy to recommend beers to us -with no obligation as we'd said we'd only be having the two. This is a proper German alehouse with a great atmosphere -food looked pretty decent too!

Many of the forum regulars had sung the praises of the Altberliner, so I decided it was time to pay it a visit. Unwittingly I chose a Wednesday evening when all Schnitzels were reduced, so I thought it would be rude not to take advantage of the offer :). It was a balmy Summer's evening, so I sat on the terrace and enjoyed a nice meal washed down with good Berliner beer. Many of the other customers were locals and knew each other, but I didn't feel at all out of place and was made welcome by both staff and other diners. The food was 'traditional German', served in large portions at very reasonable prices. If you want a touristy place where everyone speaks English, this may not be your sort of...
