"We were wandering through the huge street festival in Munich and wanted somewhere a bit quieter to sit and eat with some shade and spotted Bar Giornale with lots of shady umbrellas. The waiting staff didn't speak any English but we were in an Italian...restaurant in Germany so that's certainly not something we could criticise. We ordered a Caesar salad with prawns, a spaghetti carbonara, a medium beer and a medium glass of wine. We were able to point fairly clearly at what we wanted on the menu and our Italian is holiday passable'. A few minutes later a tiny glass of beer (just arrived and a small glass of wine. It wasn't really worth complaining as we could obviously just order another glass if we wanted one. Then a small Caesar salad arrived bereft of any prawns and obviously just a starter portion. The carbonara appeared to mostly just spaghetti in a butter sauce with some oil, a few pieces of very fatty pancetta (some pieces were literally just chuck a of fat) and a lot of pepper the latter probably there to disguise the fact that it lacked any real taste. There appeared to be a complete lack of eggs or a dash of cream that are often used with a carbonara. We're aware that cream isn't used in a lot traditional recipes but it was crying out for something to bind it all together. Oh, there was no Parmesan either. The waiter dropped the plates on the table and whooshed away before we could even say anything. It all felt too much hassle to try and get things changed so we finished up quickly and escaped"
