"Came across Bistro when searching for a place to go for a date night whilst on holiday. Not knowing the area at all apart from guide books and driving through the little town, we decided (with the help of reviews) that we'd give this...place a try. As it was a Thursday evening the town was almost silent and the Bistro quiet. Straight away Annabelle the owner greeted us like she'd know us for ages which was lovely and sorted out drinks out straight away. They bar/lounge area is exactly what we love in that it is quirky, cozy and almost like a living room. Vicky decided on a G&T and I went with a double rum and coke which went down very nicely. The menu was basic but all food homemade. I went with the fish pie and Vick went with slow cooked beef and mashed potato. Both of us loved what we had and it was worth the trip out from where we were staying. The bar was quite busy when we headed back in. A mix of locals and regulars which created a nice ambience. We chatted with Annabelle for quite a while afterwards about our holiday and the places we had visited etc. It really was a lovely evening and we'd recommend a trip here to anyone who is staying in and around the area."

Friendly welcoming. Nice touch with the onion bhajee for aperitif. Menu read well but food was basic home cooking. Vegetables over done. Interesting art work adorned the restaurant the facilities.

We popped in for a quiet drink of an evening and decided to have a gin and tonic. We went for the Tanqueray Sevilla, and it was one of the best gin and tonics I have ever had. It was presented beautifully with an edible...flower in the ice cube and tasted delicious. The atmosphere was also lovely. A little gem. Ver carta

In the wine bar, which is part of the bistro for a drink, it seemed like an exhibition of naked drawings. Ignored by the staff and made to feel uncomfortable - there were a few drunk pony ladies who cried so we decided to go. Interesting decision for a venue that is so quiet on a Saturday night, so unwilling to potential customers

One of my fav places on earth and I'm a fussy one! Great quality local meat. I call it the Modbury Groucho club. Brilliant food, amazing host, stunning eccentric decor, a couple of black cats. I would travel the world for a quirky bar like...this and found it on my doorstep! Just like the Alchemist! I wouldn't bring kids but well worth the visit for adults. We adore it! Ver carta

Had a lovely meal here with my family. The service was good with the waiter checking for more information, not making things up. Food was very good with honest information from the proprietor about the ingredients. Atmosphere was very friendly, the locals' in the bar...area enjoying themselves with flavoursome smelling bar snacks. Our meal was very good with generous portions. Overall a very good evening out.

The diversity of opinion in the ratings of Bistro 35 is quite the place, but our experience was that we like to eat here. The place is undoubtedly eccentric and the menu is limited. If you like maize potatoes, you are for a treat as it is perfectly thick, firm and creamy produced. If you don't like mash, you will fight a bit as most dishes are accompanied by mash. We had ducks and beef stew (both mash). The duck was crispy on the outside and juicy inside and was deliciously pressed with fresh orange juice. The beef stew was slowly cooked and divinely tasted. No beer for drinking, but the quality of the wines offered was excellent. In the price, Bistro 35 is cheaper than others about expensiv...

"The positive is that the food is good. But the negative is the service time and the attitude of the staff. We were seated and had our order taken after 20 minutes. A little slow but it was a busy Saturday evening so understandable. Starters came promptly and were eaten. We then got ignored by every passing member of staff for at least 50 minutes. Quite the skill! Once there was a break in our conversation and I realised how long it had been, I stood up to intercept a waitress and asked “are our mains on the way, please?” Our ticket was checked by her at the kitchen hatch and we were told “yes”. At this point our starter plates were cleared after they had sat on the table for at least 35 minutes. Our mains then took another 25 minutes to get to us, so I suspect that being told they were on their way was a lie. To be clear: we were given our mains 1hr 20 mins after placing our order. I complained to a waitress who sent over a manager. The manager asked if we’d had starters (yes, we had) and said that it was our fault our main was so late as we’d had a first course. How insulting!!! Blaming the customer for their bad service. Disgusting. When I said it was still far too long to wait between courses she then changed tack and said the kitchen was “really really busy” well, they weren’t busy cooking our food now were they?! And despite the place being full when we arrived, by this point of the night over half the tables were empty. There were 3 tickets on the pass along with ours and tables were 2 4 people (no large groups) so I feel that was also another lie to get out of it. What a shocking way to treat customers! My advice to you is: if you want your food served in a timely manner, either take the advice of the manager and don’t order a starter, or, be sure to communicate with waitstaff once your first course is finished and ask for your main to be cooked and served promptly. (Note: food also sat under the heat lamps for long lengths of time as staff stood socialising with one another behind the bar rather than serve customers) I hope this advice is of use as I would have appreciated it ahead of my visit! Good luck. [Reading other reviews, ours is not the only experience of slow service and seeing staff chat to one another rather than deal with the customers paying their wages.
