"My wife and I dined at this restaurant on Sunday 7 August. We waited in a queue to be seated at a table by the owner. After waiting for 10 minutes he came over with a table cover to cover the dirty plastic table and immediately took our order (there are no menus). We ordered soup and a salad starter none of which came with any bread (which is standard practice). We ordered a bottle of wine to go with our bottle of water but were only give one glass each, when we requested a second glass, we were told this was a simple working restaurant and there were not enough glasses for everyone to have two each!! In the meantime other customers had been taken to tables without enough chairs for them to sit on and they were left standing until the chairs in the restaurant could be juggled around accordingly. Our main courses of Tuna arrived and again still no bread. We then made a request for bread and the owner then took bread off two separate tables which customers had vacated and then served us with the left over bread!!In all our years of dining out we have never seen anything like this before. When we challenged the owner about this, he said "we throw nothing away". Which makes me wonder what exactly goes on in the kitchen that we cannot see!!St Jean de Luz is a busy seaside town with many restaurants and this one should be avoided, don't be fooled by the queue for tables."

We ate here on a sunny day in July, with shoppers and workers happily buzzing around. Lovely food. The sardines are great as is the piperade. Good and speedy service. All fresh and great atmosphere.

We stopped for a quick lunch. Service was slow, since the place was packed, but the food was terrific! We shared a platter of prosciutto, tomato salad, oysters, fish soup, and a half pitcher of Rose. No frills, but plentiful, tasty, and inexpensive.

Concept is keep it simple. And with this in mind the food is good but overpriced - very! You only get one glass per person despite ordering wine and sparkling water. And with drink from the bottle concept I personally believe price should be less than the other restaurants in town... nice and friendly staff!

This little cafe is aimed at the market traders but if they are not busy are happy for other customers. I loved the tables and chairs and the ambiance but it is clear from other reviews that others were expecting restaurant level service. The kitchen is clearly visible from the tables insid for those worried about hygiene

This restaurant has not much of an interior. The action is all on the pavement in the evening. It is very busy, very lively and good fun on a warm evening. Don't expect high gastronomy but you will get extremely fresh shellfish and fish plus a few local dishes. A must if you are visiting. But not for a quiet romantic evening!

Looks like a cute little place outside the market, but the food was less than mediocre. Worst yet is the horrendous service and attitude. We sent back a dish because it was horrible and were astounded to find that they insisted on us paying for it when the cheque arrived. They claimed that since we ordered it, we had to pay for it. When we refused, the Manager threatened to call the police. Unbelievable!

Unpretentious extension of the cafe inside the Market Hall. Elderly metal tables and chairs set up outside under parasols. No reservations, menu on chalk boards, one glass per customer. Sardines a speciality (some of the best I have eaten) but tuna also recommended (but be prepared as saignant is the most it will be cooked and any further requests will be refused). Inexpensive and extremely good - quality local produce cooked and served simply.

We spent late morning here watching them prepare for the lunch rush. The staff was friendly and helped us understand everything they were cooking and we went back and forth with English and French. They are the only restaurant located in the market and have access to all the produce and seafood. We returned for lunch service and were very pleased. The fish soup was amazing. Axoa - a typical basque dish was impressive- crushed tomatoes, veal, etc. Will definitely return.

This is a lovely town, with many fine looking places to eat. My wife wanted Moule Frite and I really wanted a fish soup, so we jumped in when we ambled past and saw both on the slate board menu.Fine dining, this is not, but a really brilliant soup de poison and lovely moules, really sweet in a lovely marinera broth. Pretty cheap for the area too. The sardines looked brilliant tooIf I wanted a full meal, I would try somewhere else, but if you are in the mood for something simple, this place is great.
