"I also remember when he was a veggie caffe. it was removed for a short time and I asked eric why. the vegetarian status has simply not worked for them, which is a scandal. I was before a gig at a saurtday evening and it was pretty busy with about 50/50 shared with veg and neat customers. it has a veggie menu and there are several vegan options. it was a little chaotic, a nice wise. I had a thali who had a chickpea curry, a veil curry and a dhal. a side with oliven was a little off. the tahli was great, the schleierkur was something oily, but still all three were good. it was a great value for the portion size and they have a good lunch with ten thali. there are better Indian options near, but if they want a chilled caffe, instead of a restaurant this is a good choice."

A fabulous little family run restaurant where good food and compassion for all go hand in hand. Although not a vegetarian/ vegan restaurant, there is an excellent selection of both on the menu. Warm and cosy, welcoming and caring. Lovely!

I used to come here now and again when they were 100% vegetarian but I won't be bothering any more. They don't even label vegan on the menu and any vegan options which you ask about seem more like an accident or afterthought than intended. I'm not convinced that this venue deserves a listing on HappyCow any more. Such a shame.

This is a great wee cosy venue in Newington. There's a real community feel to it, and its got a really relaxed vibe. I tried the vegan thali plate which was really tasty and really good value for money. The fried veg momos are also really delicious, as is their famous masala chai which can be made with soya milk. So warm and comforting on a cold day! Ver carta

I used to eat here quite a lot as it was vegetarian and the food was pretty good. Then for some reason they started serving meat. I felt betrayed as I thought the place had principles around food that I shared. I inquired as to why the addition of meat and they told me that was what customers wanted. I didn't want meat on the menu and still don't. It's not like I don't eat at meat based restaurants when I have to but I had always thought the place was something different than it turned out to be plenty of other places. It used to be a nice little vegetarian cafe. Sad.

It seems as though many of the negative reviews beforehand were because of the shock from the restaurant's transition from being veg to now omni. I understand the disappointment- however, The Himalaya Cafe is incredibly warm, hospitable and a family-oriented environment I love going to. The masala chai can be made vegan, much of the food menu is vegan, and I keep pestering about cakes, so hopefully a vegan cake option will also be available soon! Perhaps if we keep requesting more vegan options, they will be inclined to nick the meat off the menu. Overall, lovely vibes, especially on a cold Edinburgh day!

"new kapitel has caught my attention after I was on top ten on trip advisor only months after the opening in the oktober last year. that and the fact that it is open for my early january birthday, made it the perfect place to celebrate to become a little older. I was with the man and his family. the man is quite used to my taste and good to the kind of kitchen that would appeal to me for a special occasion; his family not so much and I was filled with shame as his mother scornful went through the menu trying to find something she would enjoy. I've eaten with the family of the man, and I know they enjoy eating, so I think it's a failure of the menu that it is not accessible. the benming always blooming and garnish can appeal to some, but for others it is overcomplicated and it is necessary to find a balance between the two. we start with the starters and I go for venison sour wort pithvier. the venison was underheated and incredibly dry, to the happiness the sourded a little moisturizing and so saved the whole dish, but the aromen were quite not clear, except the garnitur of plastered mushrooms I thoroughly enjoyed. for the largest part we chose a fish dish for our main,- sea trout, smoked muddles, petersilien and coast herbs. where the starter fell, the main recording is getting back. the dish is rich and creamy, and each element adds the complexity of the taste as a whole, without disturbing. the concept is now an old one, and it would be deceptive if it had not worked, as it would essentially pay with this place. I enjoyed my meal in new chapter, although I do not agree with it is stellar status under the hierarchy of edinburgh eateries. it is top ten position is just a flash in the pan of hot popularity, and in time it will be plated in the upper half of the middle stage where it belongs. and that is where it belongs, the dishes can be plated with a michelin star in understood, and the venue and the supporting media has the clean lines and empty slate look of fine but eat the team has a long gone to go if that is their real aim. at the end, although it was a beautiful meal, and cheap (at the moment I would not be surprised to see their prices slowly rise) and the man’s mother found something they enjoyed and that is the most important."
