"I 'm in Montpellier for two weeks of French language study leave from my job, and I came across this fantastic tea room pastry shop that serves French and American specialties and just opened! I have since gone back at least 3 times, and tried a variety of what they have to offer every time they have gotten it soooo right. It is already among my favorite pastry spots of all time, and this is coming from an American who has lived in New York, Paris and London among other places, and who has seen a lot of cupcake shops. The first thing I tried was the banoffee cupcake which was the trigger for me to come back again it has banana bread like cake with a caramel sauce core (dulce de leche style), a graham cracker crust at the bottom and whipped cream icing with chocolate flakes and a banana chip on top. It 's kind of perfect, and also genuinely surprising with its different textures and flavors that go together so well. This is the sort of cupcake that wins competitions. The next time I came back I tried something I had never seen before in France a brioche feuilletée . This has to be eaten to be believed, and even then you might be pinching yourself to make sure you are not dreaming. It is made with the sweet ish brioche bread, but has been turned into a layered pastry like a croissant. They had two versions, one nature (normal) and one au nutella (speaks for itself). Of course, being a normal hazelnut chocolate spread loving human, I tried the nutella one. It was a revelation of almost religious proportions, with a slightly crispy exterior, and a moist, flaky, nutella y interior that was unique in my pastry eating experience. In a world of pastry shops chasing metropolitan trends, like the cronut, or the dosant, etc, it was so refreshing to see a bold, original, and again surprising decision in this medium sized southern French city. I should add that I had this brioche feuilletée au nutella with an espresso, which proved to be an ideal combination. When I went back again (obviously) I wanted to see whether these past two times were aberrations, but they kept hitting home runs. I saw that people were finishing lunch, which looked good, but I had already eaten and was looking for sweets. I dragged people with me this time so we could try some different things at the same time we had butterscotch cheesecake, a plum tart, and a chocolate eclair. I could write a paragraph about each one of these, but it suffices to say that they were all stellar. Actually, I need to mention the butterscotch cheesecake specifically, because it was another one of those surprising moments where I tried something unlike anything I had ever tasted. I should add, the prices are fair, the people who run it are super friendly, and the space is really nice old gothic arches with a very comfy seating area upstairs. When I went back the third time, they had put up some actually cute and tasteful Halloween decorations (again surprising) that were made specifically for the space. It looked like there was a lot of attention to detail. So all of this left me with the impression of a place that takes its pastries and the enjoyment of its customers very seriously! I cannot recommend it highly enough."
