"Relatively new restaurant in Castres that specializes in a simple formula of either pasta & salad or salad composée (you get to choose the 6 items apart from the salad leaves) with your choice of dressings. My friend and I both had the salad plates which were very fresh and delicious, served with good bread. The basic salad (or pasta & small salad) is 8 euros; if you add a dessert or drink it's 10 euros; if you add BOTH a dessert & drink it's 11.50. Good value for money. The expresso afterwards was an extra 1.50 euros and was good quality. The choice of desserts was wide and though I don't usually have dessert, the creme caramel was one of the best I've tasted--fait maison--made on site. My lunch partner had TWO desserts and the chocolate mousse was wonderful too.The portion sizes are generous. The women operating the place were charming and went out of their way to assist my friend who has special food issues. In good weather the restaurant is open to the street--which makes nice people-watching, though you might find the street noise a bit much. Centrally located just off Place Jean Jaures in the heart of Castres. It's only open for lunch: 11.30-3pm. They do take-aways too--so if you needed a picnic for a car journey, this would be good option."

dishes are good but the restaurant works like a canteen. You have to make the line in the middle of the world, sometimes 15 min. Unmissable for a restaurant that respects itself. your little tray and the rest is served with gloves. pity because the placette is a beautiful frame Ver carta

Being a vegetarian isn't easy in France unless you want to eat pizza everyday! So, we stumbled across this pasta/salad bar that advertised that all its dishes could be done without meat, I was sold straight away. What I didn't expect to find was such a friendly restaurant where I could compose my own dish and where the food was excellent, all prepared to order and so fresh. Generous portions sizes and accompanied by fresh side salad, this meal set us up for the day. It's clearly a popular place so we had a bit of a wait but we really didn't mind. We would definitely go back here again. I also noticed that another reviewer mentioned the take-out being a good idea for a picnic...I so wish I'd...

"The Mediéval occupies an 11th-century building built on the left bank of the Agout River; you enter from the first street to the east — the door is a few steps below street level. We chose this restaurant because one of our party had been here ten years ago and had a very positive memory of it. We weren’t disappointed. Its name refers both to the date of its building and to its ambience: the room has a vaulted ceiling supported by arches, thick walls, an old wooden cabinet, and some medievalish decorations. The main room holds about fourteen tables; a further couple of tables are in an adjoining alcove, and a porch overlooking the river allows a couple of small tables, used seasonally. The tables are placed fairly close to one another but the feeling isn't quite cramped, especially as only four other tables were being used. The white tablecloths and sturdy chairs enhance to the comfortable feeling. We were greeted warmly for lunch, and the daily specials were explained to us. The 17€ menu of the day seemed good value. There were no choices. It began with a light and tasty fish mousse on salad greens with vegetables; this was the most creatively conceived and interesting part of the meal. It was followed by a "plat" of turkey with a particularly notable mushroom gravy and mixed mashed potatoes. The dessert was pears in a rich caramel cream. As others have noted, the portions are generous. Nothing could have done better, though I’d reinforce what another reviewer says, that with the gravy, mash, and caramel cream dessert, this was by no means a low-fat meal. Good crusty rolls were given us and replenished. We included a bottle of recent Gaillac wine, modestly priced. Service was quite friendly, but, as other reviewers have noted, sometimes a bit slow, since the staff is small. (Accordingly, I've rated the service "average", but it was much better than average in warmth.) We were in no hurry, though, and didn’t mind. Given its pleasant setting and and comfortable room, the friendliness of the staff, the good value, and the very interestingly conceived and well prepared (though rich) food, I’d recommend the Mediéval to others."
