"I 've been to Brixton Village on several occasions, and have long been dying to try the local legend, Mama Lan. It appears to even have expanded to Clapham, Dalston, and Stratford! There are usually long queues to get one of their few coveted tables, but on a Tuesday evening, we arrived just a little before 7 PM and the whole market was oddly empty so we were seated right away. The menu is pretty simple: there are a few noodle soups, a few dumplings, and some other snacks and sides. We both ordered the beef noodle soup (it says spicy on the menu, but I assure you it is hardly spicy at all), and the beef and pork dumplings. The pork dumplings are supposedly with Chinese leaf, which upon further research is what I would call a Napa cabbage. I was a bit disappointed that our dumplings didn 't arrive first, as that seemed to be a more natural way to do things. Instead, we got the beef noodle soup very shortly after ordering, and it was a good sized portion with hearty stewed beef, a great soup, and thin, tender bok choy leaves. However, it wasn 't the size of a large ramen bowl where you would only expect to eat just that one thing, so it was a good thing we ordered the dumplings. Both of the dumplings we got were pan fried, and I suppose £1 per dumpling is quite standard across London, but I still find it surprisingly expensive. Together with the beers, the meal was about £20 per person a decent cheap eat, but hardly a steal, especially considering you are sitting in the cold with your coat on. That said, they use high quality meats from Ginger Pig and it was all extremely authentic and tasty."

Delicious prawn and tofu dumplings! I got the order for takeaway and the transport to Lewisham didn't dilute the flavours at all. Pillowy dough, dumplings chock full of diced prawn and tofu and served with a spicy chili sauce that wasn't too hot. Friendly waiter and they accept card only. Yay!

The Asian representative of Brixton Village Market. Mama Lan is a small business with big flavours. I love that it 's family owned and I even got the pleasure to see mama and papa Lan at work when I had my dumplings at the 'bar ' table. I 've only had the dumplings here but I 'm sure the other dishes are good. I always mean to try the other dishes but I 'm just too taken with the dumplings to sway. So if you 're in the area definitely a place to check out for a dumpling snack. remember to check the market 's opening times to avoid disappointment.

I was wandering through the Brixton area and decided to check out one of the many eateries. I initially planned to visit Nanban for ramen since it was a chilly day, but unfortunately, it was closed. I opted for something quick and easy and popped into Mama Lan. I ordered pork and Chinese leaf dumplings along with some spicy crispy chicken wings. The wings were tasty, but I felt they could have used a sweet sauce to enhance the flavor. The dumplings were quite good when paired with vinegar and soy sauce, and it was nice to sit under cover outside in the market.

This restaurant offers not only fantastic dumplings but also delicious beef noodle soup! It's usually packed on weekends, but thanks to the quick turnover, you'll be seated in no time. Keep in mind that tables are set for two or four people, so larger groups might have some difficulty. While the service could use some improvement, as there are only one or two waitstaff handling the floor, the main draw here is definitely the amazing dumplings. There are three varieties on the menu: one boiled and two pan-fried. We sampled all three, and they were all quite tasty, although the beef dumpling was a bit unusual (it's not so common to find that in China!). Ver carta

Mama Lans is one of the restaurants situated in Brixton Village. I recently visited for a quick snack and had high hopes for a delightful experience. Although I intended to sample several dishes from their menu, the bao bun caught my attention, and I couldn't resist trying it. I chose the mama chicken bao, which was one of the largest I’ve ever had. The bun itself was soft and fluffy, but I have to say that the chicken could have benefited from a bit more seasoning to really enhance the flavors. Unfortunately, the service left much to be desired. We were barely acknowledged, which left us feeling a bit disappointed. Despite this, I would likely return to explore other items on the menu.

I highly recommend the spicy beef noodle soup. While some pieces of beef were a bit chewy (likely due to the cuts used rather than overcooking), the noodles were distinctly handmade and fresh. The broth was pleasantly warm, making it easy to enjoy. The pork dumplings were also great, though we found that the prawn and mushroom dumplings didn't quite compare. The variety of teas served was lovely. I tried the ginger rock sugar tea, which was generously portioned and quite delightful. I wouldn’t hesitate to visit their other three locations and am particularly excited about the larger branch in Stratford Olympic Village. Our meal for two, including tea, came to £15 each. Overall, I think this...

I chose the chicken noodle salad, and we shared beef and pork dumplings. The service was quick, and you could immediately tell that the food was freshly prepared. The noodle salad was surprisingly cold, but it was delicious! It was packed with chicken, perfectly seasoned in a sauce reminiscent of satay, and I loved the sprinkling of peanuts on top. Now, let’s talk about the dumplings! They were AMAZING! Soft and juicy, with a generous filling of meat and spices. I wished they would never end! I could have easily gone for another plate. If I come back, I’d skip the salad and just have two plates of dumplings—they were that good! In terms of pricing, for central Brixton Market, it’s quite... Ver carta

This is a traditional chinese supper club, ran by the friend of a friend. We went a couple of weeks back and... NOM! I had read articles about supper clubs and everyone stressed that it may not be perfect, or timely, or well organised, or anything particularly professional. Well, Mama Lan's is all of those things and I was very impressed. Ning, the girl behind this gig, learnt to cook from her mom (a homemaker) and her dad (a former VIP chef in China). Her talent is impressive, and the food... well, let's just say we didn't leave a single crumb and had to fight for the last dumpling. And there was a lot of it. Even a six-foot-tall 3000-calories-a-day black-hole-of-food walked out of there po...

The dumplings arrived simultaneously, and the first thing that caught my eye was their vibrant colors. The prawn dumplings had a pristine white shell, while the beef dumplings were a delightful dark yellow, resembling mini Jamaican patties that felt perfectly at home in Brixton. The prawn dumplings offered a lovely mix of textures, with the satisfying crunch of water chestnuts balanced by the tender chunks of prawn. However, the beef dumplings stole the show—they should definitely be eaten whole with a drizzle of black vinegar, as they burst with juicy flavor in every bite. The wings were crispy and enjoyable, although slightly overcooked. They relied on the idea that the crispy skin of chi...

"Visit with friends. Arrived and the restaurant was very empty at that time of the evening. Shown to a table that had been allocated to us. Asked if we could move to another and I was initially given the impression that that might be difficult. Just to say again that the tables were allocated rather than reserved. Another customer was making a similar request and after some back and forth we could both move. Not the greatest of starts. This restaurant specialises in Punjabi cuisine. That is what attracted us in the first place when reviewing the menu online before we booked. Starters were of a generous size but rather stodgy. Perhaps more filling for a starter than you might expect particularly if you had ordered a main course and were intending to have a dessert. In contrast my wives dessert was very small for the price charged. The main courses were very spicy even though we requested mild. I appreciate that is a preference on our parts but my wife felt the same. We went with a friend who was visibly sweating. He comment on his main fish course was that under the spice it was a little bland. A lady I took to be the owner asked if we were enjoying our main couse? We commented on how spicy they were and asked for some yoghurt to cool them down. This was supplied with no issues and in fact my wife's prawns (only three found sadly) and my lamb main course were taken back to the kitchen to have I assume some of the chillies taken out or additional yoghurt added. This was done very politely and efficiently. Just to add we have absolutely no issues with regional food differences whether they may be. Perhaps our preference in this instance for less spice takes away from the experience the restaurant seeks to give. However requesting when ordering a mild version, and when asked what we preferred as well, makes the customer right. To drink. A beer for me and our friend. A cranberry juice for my wife which apparently tasted like a squash. Service left something to be desired as well I am afraid. On our initial table three menus supplied. On the second only one and had to ask for two more. Table wiped down after our main courses but only one corner? Had to ask several times for the bill, having asked the lady above who dealt with the spicy food issues. In fact she was eating her evening meal behind us with other customers and jumped up and apologised when she realised she had not let us have our bill. The waitress who we dealt with initially about our table allocation asked at the end of our meal if we had enjoyed it and if we would return. Afraid we said no to both. We had a mutually respectable conversation as to why not and discussed the issues above and others. So a disappointing evening I am afraid. However this is a true reflection of our experience from our perspectives."
