"Made a late booking for the Sunday roast spoke to the lovely Wendy the manager, over the phone she done everything she could to accommodate myself and partner. What a lovely warm welcome we got. We were welcomed like old friends. The food was amazing home cooked hot food. It felt like going to someone’s house for Christmas Day. Can’t recommend this restaurant highly enough. The service was spot on, the staff lovely and welcoming and the atmosphere was relaxed and spotlessly clean. The prices were reasonable. We enjoyed a lovely beef roast with all the trimming including extra gravy, follows by aunties homemade pavlova. I don’t normally leave reviews, but felt I had to after visiting this gem of a place. Which I found via trip advisor so thought only fair for me to also report back after my Visit. If your near or staying in Southend and don’t visit this restaurant your be sorry. "I always loved this place but sadly I don’t think I’ll go back. I’m currently on maternity leave and on 2 occasions I have been made to feel so unwelcome with my pram by the same male member of staff. I appreciate it’s not huge in there but each time space could have been made for us. It seemed it wasn’t worth the hassle and I was left awkwardly standing at the door, clearly not welcome to stay. It’s such a shame. I was a big supporter during lockdown and was so pleased when they announced they were doing take away again as it has always been our favourite. Saddened former customer."

"We hosted my dads 80th family meal (27 people) at Malaya and we wasn’t disappointed. Leading up to the evening the manager could not of been more helpful in helping to organise and this continued as soon as we arrived. The food was fantastic with the added comfort of being asked how mild or spicy you would like your meal prepared. The beef rendang is not to me missed."

"Went for a family meal party of 8 , the food was excellent and the service by Kerry was outstanding, she made sure we got the combination of food we wanted even if we changed it a bit from what was on the menu and made sure we had drinks when needed, Kerry works hard. Would recommend anyone going there for food and drinks. We will definitely be going back Thank you Oakwood Pub"

"Have had takeaway from here both and it’s been pretty good, so decided to try the all you can eat buffet on a Sunday. There are 2 hour time slots, we went for the 2pm-4pm time slot. We were one of the last tables to arrive in that time slot meaning our orders were on of the last. Drinks took a long time and we had to ask for them twice. Starters were served fairly quickly but we ordered our mains after our starters were finished, we probably didn’t get our mains until 3:30pm at which some dishes were missing and they had to cook those. It got to just before 4pm and we were being rushed out as the next timeslot were arriving. No time to order anymore even though it’s as much as you like. The timeslots don’t work, it’s no good having everyone turn up at the same time, it needs to be spread over time. There were equally other frustrated faces in the restaurant at how long the food was taking, the food quality was not great either. Will not be returning based on that."
