"The restaurant is located on the wide boulevard where both the U + S-Bahn stop (station: Bundesplatz) – only a few short train stops from Zoologischer Garten (the Zoo) or Ku’damm on the U-Bahn. It is in a tranquil, residential neighborhood and is a 12 minute walk from the Metro. Although I was with German friends, waiters spoke English both evenings that I was there. It would be helpful to have a cuisine glossary with you, but it is not absolutely necessary. (Menus are in German: this is not a tourist-oriented establishment). The restaurant is spacious and attractive. There is additional seating outdoors in the warm weather, overlooking a contiguous park. The setting is comfortable and informal. The first course was a generous salad comprised of an interesting combination of mixed greens with a light balsamic vinaigrette. A special main course of the evening was a fish stew – a light, flavourful broth containing a sampling of several kinds of fish – adding their garlic bread into the soup was a tasty idea. While the portion was not terribly large, it was well executed and flavorsome: its broth complimented its contents well without being overly assertive. The dessert of the hot, molten, chocolate cake served with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream that was drizzled with chocolate, and sitting in a bath of crème anglaise with strawberries was a more than satisfying choice. As a surprise, egg nog (eierlikör) served in a dark chocolate thimble-size cup was a lovely finish to the dinner. The total bill was 22€ each including the tip. (Tips seem not to be included on the bill in Germany). On another evening, I had perfectly cooked (à pointe) roasted lamb served with herbed, creamy potatoes and vegetables. Again, the bill was surprisingly low as compared to prices in the U.S.I highly recommend this restaurant, and plan to return there when I am next in Berlin."

Having just arrived back to Berlin after a trip to a rural part of Germany, I was very excited to find Hugo as a restaurant that was a walkable distance from my lodgings. I started with a spicy Hungarian goulash (just the right amount of spice, with well-marinated chunks of mushroom, meat, etc.) and then enjoyed a light cod dish with a huge, fresh salad on the side. Prices were very reasonable, and I enjoyed every bite!

The restaurant is not so big, which makes the place very warm and intimate. Most of the crowed are locals but the waiter speaks great English and was super kind. The food arrived fairly quick (in German standard), while we waited we got some soup...on the house. We ordered one dish of schnitzel for the kids, and the waitress automatically split the portion to plates and served each kid her own plate. We ordered the steak and a fish, both were well made and very tasty. Couldn't stay for desert as the kids were too tired, but we will definitely go back to try the Apfel Strudel

We booked the Silvester dinner online and had some issues with the payment. In the end went to the hotel for payment in person. That aside, the entire dining experience was fantastic. Excellent food, prompt service, and a good view of the Tiergarten where we...can see the fireworks of the city. Especially liked the white truffle and ravioli. Amazing. Wines were not really of our liking (we prefer full bodied, but German wines are typically medium and sweet) though. Overall we really enjoyed ourselves, and my friends are already talking about going back for already. Big thanks to the chef and crew for an excellent job.

We visited this restaurant on our first evening in Berlin. The food was excellent but you can find good food at this level in many restaurants with a Michelin star. What made Hugo exceptional was high quality food and the superb service that was friendly without becoming familiar. The flexibility of the sommelier was impressive as was his willingness to go outside the box. They had a standard wine tasting menu for the different courses, but we wanted exclusively German wines being in Germany. He did an exceptional job and especially the German Pinot Noir was truly wonderful. The wonderful view over the city was a bonus. All in all a super experience that I can recommend to anyone interested...
