"Went on the recommendation of a client, and ordered the fish chips, no problem. Two cups of tea, no problem. What spoiled the experience was a sniffy young table-wiper with a bald head and a lightning strike tattoo. The tea is served in a large cup black, and is accompanied by what I can only describe as a thimble-sized pot thing half-filled with milk. I requested quite politely for more milk, because there wasn 't enough in the thimbles for myself and my client. The response from the whining baldy was something along the lines of, It 's a waste of milk, you 'll only waste the milk. What kind of table-server answers back in this obnoxious way? Who was he to tell me how much milk I 'm allowed? Especially after forking out £35 for the fish chips. I pointed out that a pint of milk was very cheap and reiterated my desire for more milk, at which point the table-wiper with attitude (assumedly pre-menstrual) flounced off an brought another thimble over. Incredibly embarrassing for myself and my client, and a despicable attitude from server who should be much more considerate and polite. Being an Irish farmer, next time I will load up one of my cows and graze her on the bit of grass outside the establishment. Then I won 't have to be party to this disgraceful milk-rationing that this little Napoleon attempted to implement. Otherwise, a nice meal (chips a bit overdone, but fish very nice). I doubt I 'll be going back."

Most of the food was ok but the barman who took our order was very rude. Didn't want to give more milk for tea and just couldn't seem to be bothered. Seemed to find us beneath him.

Someone needs to show them how to make good coffee. £3 for the most disgusting cup of coffee we have EVER tasted. In fact, no taste at all. In a blind tasting you would not know it was coffee. Won't go again.

Slow cooked beef was generous and tender, sweet carrots, plenty of gravy. We only meant to have a sandwich and enjoy a craft fair! The light was clear over the water making somebody think my photo was a painting. Ver carta

Called in for coffee and hot choc on a blustery day after a good stroll round Shotley, the drinks were fine and average price but the chap who served wasn't at all friendly in fact he took our order and proceeded to chat to his mate who was stood at the bar without a word to us

Visited Shotley with friends who have a boat in the marina. Booked a table for 1.45pm, we understood that table service was unavailable as short staffed. We arrived early and it was sooo busy we decided to order straight away whilst ordering drinks from the bar. A few items were unavailable but that was understandable with the amount of people there. We all ordered different items and they were brought to our table after a longer than usual wait. Saying that all meals were delicious although portions were a little on the large size. Saved room for one of their ice creams behind the bar...I recommend the Devon Toffee. Will definitely return soon. Ver carta

Thought we would eat here as previously we had eaten here before and had a great experience, but not this time!! . Upon sitting down at the table to look at the menu, of member of staff promptly showed us a list of menu items which were not available, this included several main course items and no sweets at all, although all four of us had the scampi and enjoyed the meal, we were more than disappointed with the lack of food on offer. We would suggest in future if most menu items are not available due to supply issues or whatever, then don't bother opening for people to eat in the first place!! This then would save me having to give this poor review.

Having abandoned our planned stop at the Shotley Rose, due to an unhelpful landlady, we rode on and found this place at the end of the marina. Looks inviting from the outside and inside it is a weirdly layout property I suspect it is used as a washroom and stopover for yachtsmen. Firstly the staff were very friendly and helpful. Toilets a bit of a mess I blamed the yachtsmen!!! Great view of felixstowe container dock and the river. A selection of 4 real ales. Lunch menu okay no deserts only cake but we didn’t want desert. Chicken skewers tasty and a decent portion. Hunters chicken looked a bit messy, a rasher of bacon laid not wrapped around the chicken breast. Cheese was a bit fatty and did...

"Checking in to a hotel in an unfamiliar place, it is tempting to book one 's first evening meal in the hotel 's restaurant (unless, of course, one has had chance to research the alternatives beforehand . This may seem a safe option, but is often a mistake, as it was on my visit to Ipswich. Had I only known that a minute 's walk along the quayside would have taken me to Mariners, I should have eaten there twice rather than only once! A floating restaurant can often prove to be a bit of a gimmick, but Mariners seemed to get good reviews so, on night two, I gave it a try. A beautifully restored and maintained Dutch customs gunboat from 1900, with gleaming brass and polished woodwork, the restaurant offers a limited, but well-constructed, menu to satisfy most tastes. Being aboard a boat, I opted for seafood, and was not disappointed. There being an R in the month , mussels were a good choice for my starter, followed by a seafood skewer , presented with just enough theatre to be amusing but not over the top. Not fine dining , perhaps, but well-prepared, nicely presented and very satisfying dishes at reasonable prices. A limited wine list, perhaps a bit on the pricey side, but the Picpoul de Pinet proved to be an excellent accompaniment without over-stressing the credit card. Service struck just the right balance between politeness and friendliness. My fellow diners embraced the whole age spectrum (I was by far the oldest! weighted perhaps towards the younger end, the common factor being that everyone (myself included was clearly enjoying themself. There are many other dining venues along the Ipswich quayside that my brief visit did not allow me to try, but Mariners can be recommended as a safe and enjoyable bet."
