"I visited The White Heart on Friday at 3:30pm while staying nearby for a week of fishing. After shopping, my wife and I decided to stop in for a drink. The beer was delicious, and we received a warm welcome from the friendly landlady. When we inquired about food options, we decided to order then. My wife, who is a vegan, chose the only vegan item on the menu – a delicious curry. I opted for the haddock with triple-cooked chips and mushy peas, which were truly amazing. I also ordered some onion rings, which were clearly homemade and among the best I've ever had. The haddock was huge, a refreshing change from the smaller portions served at other restaurants. The landlady mentioned they offer 'Light Bite' options for many of the dishes, including the haddock. I will definitely choose The White Heart again when I am in the area – I have a love for good food, and this meal was fantastic. I can't recommend it enough, I absolutely loved it!"

"We visited the restaurant at 6:50pm for a 7:00pm reservation on the 18th Sep. Our orders were taken, two of us had a starter and the third member of our group didn't. Our main courses arrived 1 hour and 20 minutes later. During that time we noted that three other tables were occupied by customers. All of those tables received their meals before we did. A table of three had even paid and left before our order arrived. When I complained I was told the kitchen was very busy. But that doesn't account for us being served out of turn and our food orders were basic, so in no way a cause for such a delay. This wasn't our first visit to this restaurant and we were looking forward to this one too. Both the food and service had been excellent on that occasion. We are all very disapointed and the belated offer of a free Sambouca or Bailey's did nothing to change our opinions, but instead serves to confirm the accuracy of this review."

"The Lord Nelson is our local village pub, and this is no ordinary village pub. For the first time, we used the gorgeous private dining room for our early Mother’s Day celebrations on Saturday lunch time. My Husband was the advance party and was waiting for us at the bar, the rest of us wandered into the pub and immediately got a hello, how are you, what can we get you welcome. We moved to Winthorpe last year and checked out the pub, we were greeted in the same way on our first visit as we did today superb customer service.The private dining room (no charge) was a great place for us to be as we are a rowdy family and only find ourselves all together half a dozen times of year, so laughing and gossiping privately didn’t bother anyone else.For starters we ordered double baked cheeses soufflés; ham hock with scallops and black pudding and spring rolls.Each one of us thought the standard of food was exceptional, for main courses we ordered breast of chicken, parmentier potatoes, roast shallot, savoy cabbage and smoked bacon sauce, Nelson beef burger topped with red leicester cheese and smoked bacon in a toasted brioche; 12oz Rib eye steaks; Lobster and king prawn tagliatelle in garlic and tomato sauce served with dough balls and garlic dipping butter (and it wasn’t over powering). The most amazing Shepherds Pie which was a duo of Lamb rumpled and braised meat served with greens, broccoli and rosemary jus.There is a wonderful wine list to choose from, we ordered Baglio Gibellina. Our expectations continued to be exceeded when we all ordered puddings try the Nelson rhubarb trifle, vanilla panna cotta, rhubarb jelly, rhubarb compote and a shortbread crumb; flourless chocolate brownie served with chocolate sauce and chantilly cream and Sticky toffee pudding served with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream.We were so busy eating we forgot to take any photos of our food, which was exceptional."

"Unfortunately, I had the displeasure of coming across the Square and Compass in Normanton on Trent while looking at properties in the area with my partner. Our experience at this restaurant left me unimpressed. The place seemed nice and the staff were pleasant, but the problems arose with our meals. I ordered a glass of Merlot and sparkling water. The water was fine, but the wine was far from impressive. My partner ordered a mint and pea risotto with edamame beans and pea shoots, but it came without edamame beans or pea shoots and was described as bland. I opted for a rare sirloin steak with flat mushroom, grilled tomato, onion rings, and coleslaw. Unfortunately, my steak was overcooked and full of gristle, with an overwhelming amount of peppercorns thrown on top. The onion rings looked appealing but were undercooked inside with a soggy batter. The reheated chips, slightly heated tomato, and lackluster coleslaw added to the disappointment. On the bright side, the flat mushroom was cooked perfectly. Despite only a few other diners in the restaurant, the service did not live up to expectations. I paid my bill of £42.80 and left feeling very disappointed with the overall experience."

"Visited here for breakfast on a whim as we had been here once before . However, this visit was so disappointing and didn’t want it to be! When we arrived it was empty and ordered breakfast with items we didn’t want but was told we couldn’t swap and change. We were left with no drinks and when my daughter asked for a drink she was told I’m busy and I’m on my own and left us , at this point we should have left but wanted to give it another chance! Sorry but poor service, attitude, customer service was below average and didn’t feel welcome. If this was a bad day then please reflect because we will not be returning again"
