"Terrible. 16 people paid £16 each for afternoon tea. 1st few sandwiches were very good but only a few plates of them. Asked for more sandwiches and staff pulled a face. Waited approx an hour and half for additional sandwiches (egg and tuna on plain bread with great lumps of butter). 2 choices of cake. Slab chocolate fudge and a concoction of something nobody could identify and eat. There was a spicy sausage roll, ok and scones with jam and cream. 1 small bowl of whipped cream between 16 people. Eventually got more, some guests trVelled over a 100 miles for this get together. Mum to be was embarrassed at the offeri g and kept apologising. A number of us complained at the bar, and response was a shrug of the shoulders and 'sorry '. Staff service was non existent. We had to clear tables ourselves and then had to ask staff to remove all the dirty plates from the room. Very disappointed Appalling food and service. Would not recommend. Definately not worth the money."

Had a lovely meal in the Duke. 2 course dinner with plenty of food, and very tasty! Great service and staff couldn't be more helpful. Would happily return!

Loved the look of the building so we called in for a drink. The atmosphere was really nice and the Christmas decorations were lovely. We didn't eat but noticed food coming out of the kitchen which looked good. We will be back and hopefully stop at this hotel.

I stayed overnight for work and I was pleasantly surprised. The rooms were lovely and tastefully decorated, respecting the building's heritage. The bed was very comfortable and the food (both dinner and breakfast) was delicious. All of this at a great price! This restaurant is a wonderful addition to Barrow and a good reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses over chain hotels. I will definitely stay here again. Ver carta

We had been here before when visiting Barrow so on this last occasion I didn't check the menu beforehand. I booked online, as usual, and on arrival I did check it and found that it did not have the usual choice, was very limited, and that the prices were, in my opinion, extremely expensive. Good ambience and service, and the food was good but definitely not value for money. Unless the prices are reduced we will be going to Wetherspoon's the next time we visit. Disabled friendly.

This grand old hotel has a restaurant and bar that looks like it should be in a Roaring 20s classic movie. Perfect use of Edison style lighting highlights the leather seating. Just an amazing looking place. I was there for lunch so I didn’t get the full grand dinner experience but I appreciated that the menu featured a wide variety of foods. My wife and I both loved what we had (pastrami sandwich and fish and chips. We did a tour of the rooms. Each one is unique and feature period era beams but modern amenities.

We ate today party of 7. From the time we arrived, the staff were very friendly and eager to please. We were seated quickly and had the menu explained. Starters were excellent and presented beautifully. The main courses came with just the right amount of time to rest and again were nicely presented. Clean plates all round! A small issue was quickly and efficiently resolved with no fuss. Deserts and coffees were lovely and we found the drinks to be reaonsably priced. Will definitely return and would recommend. Staff are working very hard and the chef is producing food to a good standard. It's been a few years since we had eaten at the doe but would not hesitate to book again. Ver carta

I visited this restaurant for a special occasion while in the Lake District. The menu looked promising with some appealing specials. The starters were enjoyable, particularly the pork belly. However, the main courses were a bit disappointing. The sea bream dish with pea fricassee turned out to be pan-fried sea bream with potatoes, peas, chorizo, and baby onions, lacking any discernible sauce. This dish didn't quite meet my expectations and I noticed that it has since been replaced with sea bass. The haddock and chips were good, but the chips were oversized and there were too many of them - fries would have been a better choice. Additionally, the mushy peas seemed past their prime.

I recently had Sunday lunch at this restaurant and it was absolutely dreadful. The duck parfait starter was a disappointment, appearing as a tasteless slab of shop-bought mess with limp accompaniments. The dish came without bread or crackers, which we had to request. To make matters worse, there was even a plastic sheet left on the base of the parfait. My wife's garlic mushrooms were served with a dry, crispy slice of bread that was barely warm. The lamb mains were served cold, along with cold vegetables. When we complained, the chef simply scraped the lamb and mash onto another plate and poured hot gravy over it. The vegetables were microwaved before being returned to our table. We ultimate...

"We visited our old favourite Hartley’s again this evening for only the second time in 2023. We always have a lovely time here but we are guilty sometimes of forgetting just how good the food is! To put it into context we have become “foodies” over the last few years having been spoiled by annual trips to France and a few Michelin Star experiences in the UK. Tonight we went back to the fabulous friendly and laid back experience that epitomises our favourite local restaurant, Hartley’s. From the minute we walked in, it was the usual friendly welcome and banter and wow was the food “on point”. Mrs D had the bruschetta freeing me to have the Squid and both were fabulous. Let’s be honest I don’t really like salad, but the one they do with the squid I could happily just eat on its own and with the pickle it so complements the subtle taste of the squid. For mains I had the sublimely balanced gammon with cream sauce, poached egg potatoes and cabbage. How well each element complements one another, The better half enjoyed the Seabass, which from my shared forkful was equally lovely. I had the delicate rhubarb and ginger crumble for pud while the missus had STP. All washed down with a lovely Chilean Merlot! What a fabulous evening! I said to JD “sometimes we do forget just how good this place is” 5 stars tonight only because I couldn’t give 6!"
