"We booked a meal here to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and it was our first meal after lockdown was lifted to allow meals out. The menu was pretty much a set menu which makes sense as we had expected a limited menu given the Covid19 situation. The food was not anything like the pictures on the reviews. We opted for the four courses for £65. Unfortunately the food was not up to scratch, many cold dishes, a lot of it was under seasoned. We expected more food for the price and a better standard. We left hungry. The restaurant was VERY cold and the toilets even colder.Unfortunately we will not be back or recommend this restaurant to anyone else. Over priced and disappointing."

Marvellous before lockdown, even more marvellous afterwards! The COVID safe measures are professional and effective, the food still delicious and the welcome still warm. All in a beautiful, rural, historic setting. So happy you’re open again! Thank you

We had the most wonderful evening at The George on what was meant to be our wedding day. The setting was so inviting, intimate and relaxed. The service was really great; attentive waiters and the owner who made a point of greeting guests and chatting...

Had my first meal out here after four months on lockdown and it was so good it genuinely made me feel emotional! So grateful to all the team for producing such an unbelievably delicious meal, in a gorgeous setting and making us feel so safe and welcome. Every mouthful was total bliss I’ll always remember it!

We arrived for a short Peak District break and after a long walk and stroll in Alstonefield during Covid rules walked into the back garden of the George , the pub is well equipped to deal with opening under new Covid guidelines , food smelt lovely great pint of Estella chat with the managers/owners very pleasant will return for a meal

I made a reservation for Friday Lunch but had to cancel the day before on Thursday due to the death of my father. I wanted to rebook for the following Friday but have just discovered that they have charged me 50 pounds deposit for cancelling 24 hours in advance. WILL CERTAINLY NOT BE GOING BACK NOW AND WILL RECLAIM THE CHARGE VIA MASTERCARD.

I came here with family and friends for our first post lockdown meal and it was absolutely stunning. Service was fabulous, great wine list and the food was sensational. Cooked to perfection with local produce, lots of extras included with the most divine sticky chicken! Great atmosphere, along with careful distancing. Our first visit here, despite living locally for over 15 years but will certainly return soon!

I want to say a big thank you to Graham the team for a great evening! Everything was just right from the decor, the wine, the food, the service up to the ambiance.Even with the social distancing measures in place, it didn’t feel intrusive, in fact they have helped to create a more intimate setting if anything, so well done for getting everything right. The George sets the right tone for fine dining in the beautiful setting of Alstonefield in the Peak District. We will be back.

We had a really good Sunday lunch at The George, in the delightful small village of Alstonefield, whilst staying nearby. The food was very well cooked and seasoned. All courses were most enjoyable, especially our lamb and pork main courses, which were generously portioned. Staff were very good and pleasant, especially the Manager, who was friendly and chatty, and made us feel very welcome.Eating out is one of the pleasures of life, and our visit was especially appreciated, and savoured, after being deprived of such experiences during lockdown.

"Our room faced the front of the hotel, and while the village was quiet with only two pubs and a small corner store, it seemed to be a shortcut for heavy vehicles speeding downhill at night, with headlights constantly illuminating our room. We also found out that the hotel closes in the evening if it's not busy, and the front door may be locked as early as 10 PM, requiring a code for re-entry. The internet service was poor; even standing just outside the front door, I had no reception and couldn't call the emergency numbers posted there. It appears that the quality of the rooms varies significantly, with some having been upgraded while others are less desirable, including our own. When we questioned our bill because we didn't think the room was worth £140, we were told that since we had booked through Charming Escapes, we should take it up with them, as the hotel receives only a fraction of what we paid. This made us feel like second-class guests, especially since it seemed we were stuck in a low-quality room. The standard rate for a double room is £90, and if I were to rate our experience like on the TV show "Four in a Bed," I would say £50 a night would have been generous. Previous reviews also mentioned an issue with the door handle and the ability to lock the room, which had not been fixed. If you’re just looking for a place to dry off your hiking boots, this hotel might suffice, but I wouldn't recommend staying here again. It has a lot of potential, and thankfully, we had a wonderful evening at The Devonshire Arms just across the street—it felt like a whole different experience. It seems the staff at Charles Cotton have simply given up."
