"Friendly pub with a good menu. We both enjoyed our lunches though I have to say the pie was great, better than the fish and chips (the batter was not the greatest very yellow and not as crisp and bubbly as some but the fish was good). Portion size is very generous. Lunch time deals are good. Would def recommend and would go back. Bill was around £35 for two courses and a drink can't argue. Didn't even need a dinner that night monster sized sticky toffee pudding! Quite a few people in on lunch time (it was valentines though) which is great to see."

"Nice atmosphere, service and beer. Fish and chip lunch was disappointing. the Haddock was cooked in cool oil so it was soggy and had greasy batter. Fish portion was small and rather tasteless. Chips were also tasteless and cooked at too low a temperature. I asked for some bread and got a slice of Mothers Pride that came already covered in butter/spread. I don't have either on my bread normally, and expected a bread roll or something. No-one asked me if my meal was ok, otherwise I would have discussed this with them. As I say it seems like a nice pub, but I don't think they should have let my meal leave the kitchen."

"The food has gone down-hill in recent weeks. I am unsure what has happened but the packaging has changed, all of our favourite food now comes VERY different. For example then wraps are tightly wrapped with not much substance, the fishcakes and chips are stale, and the sausages have changed to a very processed taste. We used to order weekly but now we will try again in a few months. UPDATE 23/04/2024 This was an old review, i can say that it has improved back to how it used to be, i'm not sure what has changed but good job Trawlies :"

"Our first visit to Saffron Walden after lockdown and just had to take back home from our favourite coffee place in this town their enormous scones. There is always a vast array of cakes but nearly always plump for their scones. We also took away...a very large scotch egg for lunch. We have never been disappointed both with food quality and service and cant wait to be able to sit inside once more. Highly recommended."

"I’ve always liked the food here and my wife and I thought we would pop in for lunch. I have to say the food was nice, however I was less than impressed with the service. I felt like we were just a nuisance and everything was rushed. I asked for ketchup and he just brought over a massive bottle and slammed it onto the table. Everything felt money oriented and almost annoyance we didn’t spend more (our bill was over £30 for lunch) I have to say it made us feel a bit uncomfortable, especially with a little baby and with the amount of competition in Saffron Walden I do find the service in some places quite shocking. I would have to think twice about going again- which is a shame as it’s somewhere we have gone fairly often."
