"Good Japanese food depends on good ingredients and the proper preparation. It is never easy in England where the ingredients are going to be expensive and the skills hard to find. This restaurant is an excellent compromise. It does not reach the heights of fine dining but it is well worth what you are paying for. The tempura was particularly well made, fresh oil, crispy batter, the dipping broth needed some daikon and ginger but that is the compromise. Chirashi was well made, but perhaps a bit too much vinegar, perhaps the fish was cut a little thinly, but that is the compromise. Green tea in clay coloured cups? But that is the compromise. For England, this was very good cooking for a price competitive with other local restaurants. Definitely worth a try, there are hints of Korean flavours on the menu, but this is washoku"

This restaurant was absolutely amazing. It was our first time there and the food was fantastic, yet reasonably priced. The eel sushi was outstanding, and the katsu was heavenly. The whole experience was truly authentic and Japanese-inspired. Ver carta

have found us a table although they are busy, but said they have no vegan options and offered no adjustments. they have never heard of happier **** and said they would not give permission to be advertised on them. they are not vegan friendly.

This delightful Japanese restaurant offers a variety of dishes to cater to all tastes at very reasonable prices. The food is freshly prepared and served hot. The staff are welcoming and attentive, and the restaurant is efficiently managed. I will definitely return and highly recommend it to others.

I ate in umai a few times and I was always pleasantly surprised. it is a beautiful restaurant that is a sweet little ally. some highlights from the menu I tried are the inari sushi, vegetarian maki, veg gyozas, nebelsuppe grilled aubergine. I've never tried the noodles or curries, but they look impressive from the kitchen. it would be a good place to go with friends / family that are not vegan or vegetarian. Ver carta

the waitress did not seem to know what was vegan and asked me to order something else. then brought me fish instead of herbal tempura. I'm sure they have vegan options, it just needs a little forward planning if I told them I could probably have made clear what I could eat. I wasn't too sure after the table staff didn't know that prawns were on the non-Veg list, so they didn't eat anything, but fortunately a burrito of okra in the evening, so I survived.

I love sushi. I typically buy it from the supermarket or places like Yo Sushi. The green tea, miso soup, and warm sake were excellent and truly exceptional. The salmon was delicious, and the tuna was exceptional - I've never had it so tender that it practically melts in your mouth. The surroundings at this restaurant are beautiful, and Shrewsbury is a wonderful place to visit and explore. It's a smaller restaurant, so it's recommended to make a reservation for both evening and daytime visits. The chicken bento box seemed to be a popular choice when we visited.

"Beautifull hotel, I guess one can call it trendy , but I just don 't understand how they can justify the price £130/night and that most of the time will go to £160 as they run out of entry level ones. So I guess the answer is there because people pay for it! But let 's just make some relevant comparisons Birmingham Grand literally in the heart of the city, brand new, 5* hotel, with all recently decorated rooms to the highest standard is £135 15 for breakfast. Needless to say rooms are air conditioned, fully equipped and genuinelly very posh. Hotel has lifts, has porters and the service is top notch. The Lion is barelly 4* just for trendiness alone, but the actual quality of furnishing is closer to 3*, has no lift and you will be lugging your bags up and down mutiple flights of stairs (and I mean multiple like 8 going up and down) trought narrow corridors to mediocre room (nothing wrong with it just mediocre) which isn 't even air conditioned. Sorry, I just don 't get it. That said restaurant is good fully fine dining if you are into it. Althought in my oppinion it doesn 't fit into the rest of the hotel. So it is ~3.5* hotel which is very youghtfull and trendy and then you get 5* fine dining with very tiny portions for the dinner (which is not criticism of restaurant, it is very good on it 's own). In conclussion I just don 't get what niche this hotel is filling, who stays there and why. The price for the rooms should be £75 95 tops. Shreesbury is not exactly prime tourists destination either (at least shouldn 't). But it seems it is working out for them, I just would not recommend it, I would not stay in it again and it is definatelly not worth the price. Neither in isolation, nor in comparison."

"Open since 1970 and located on Mardol, one of Shrewsbury’s oldest streets @thecurryhouseshrewsbury serves locally sourced ingredients married with traditional spices and chillies from the Indian subcontinent, a match made in heaven. 5 5 Recommended Price No better way to kick off proceedings but with popadoms, chutneys and fresh onion salad. On to appetisers and there are so many tempting dishes to choose with many of these exclusive to the curry house. Our first time trying Pani Puri. A sweet and spicy hot street food snack filled with chickpeas and tamarind sat on a bed of crunchy, nutty Bombay mix. With a building but pleasant heat, definitely something everyone should try. The quality and freshness of the seafood was exceptional. Spicy king prawns were huge and cooked to perfection. Charred on the outside for flavour but juicy and meaty. Trio of King scallops were beautifully tender and of a good size with sweetness from the tamarind liquor. Lamb rogan Josh tender lamb shoulder in a medium hot ginger tomato and onion sauce. A strong take on a traditional favourite of ours. Fresh from the Tandoor a generous mix of marinaded chicken, lamb, king prawns and a chargrilled lamb chop. The Tandoori deluxe massalla sauce was the perfect blend of sweetness melting into a subtle heat which brought the dish together perfectly. The curry house takes traditional dishes and flavours from the Indian subcontinent and elevates them to a level beyond expectations. Thank you for our invite to share the exciting menu created with passion and creativity. "Fantastic range of small dishes and meals for lunch and dinner. The menu ranges from scandi to oriental, so something for everyone. The menu is clearly marked with allergens, including what meals can be adapted. The chicken is halal and vegan and vegetarian options are plentiful. The cocktail and mocktail menu is great and they do one of the best espresso martinis in Shrewsbury. The decor is modern and comfortable and there is plenty of space. As a wheelchair user, I can get into the ground floor and to a table. The outside seats are up a small step, but the whole front of the building is a retractable wall of windows, so I can still get the feeling of eating outside in good weather. The service is friendly and knowledgeable about allergies, the menu and the wine list. The staff are helpful and unobtrusive. The only difficulty for me (hence the 4 star review) is that the accessible bathroom is next door, in their sister bar, Libertine. Unfortunately, libertine isn't open the same hours as HotRS, so I can only use it at certain times. The ladies does have a lock on the door, so staff have cleared the ladies toilets, which allowed me to take my chair in and lock the door. I had to walk a couple of steps to get into a stall but my chair was safely with me. Of course, there is also no alarm cord, but they stood outside the door so would have heard if I shouted for help."
