"Overlooking the River Stour and the 14th century Barbican the Bell Hotel is ideally placed to welcome visitors to this historic Cinque Ports town.Arriving on a very busy Easter Saturday with lunch in mind the family had a brief look at various other options before eventually choosing the Bell. At a glance we decided to eat outside then alternatively in the immediate bar area, but after being told they first needed to clear the tables and that there would be a 30 35 minutes wait for food my immediate inclination was to look elsewhere. However, after making a quick reconnaissance and further inquiries a lovely window table was found on the upper level which offered a full waiter service. Settling down into our comfortable seats we placed our order for starters of carrot and coriander soup, courgette sweetcorn fritters and salt and pepper squid. To follow, the main courses were grilled mackerel accompanied by new potato salad and veal escalope.Although one of our party expressed a reservation over the mackerel dressing the overall rating was very favourable in terms of cooking, taste, portion sizes, presentation and service. In my own case my crispy coated escalope of veal with sauteed new potatoes and green beans finished with a buttery caper sauce exceeded my expectations. Only one diner felt able to manage a dessert a pear tart tatin and Cornish cream ice cream. For drinks we chose Gordons pink gin and lemonade, Fevertree tonic water and two glasses of the excellent Runnymede Sauvignon Blanc (Marlborough N.Z).A very enjoyable lunch in a comfortable and unhurried environment away from the hectic downstairs atmosphere and compared to other nearby establishments at a competitive price. As one would expect the facilities matched the cleanliness of our immediate surroundings."

"We visited Dover Marine Hotel yesterday 16th December 2023 for a Christmas lunch. We have visited many times with family for coffees at this Hotel, but never for lunch, so we had no expectations. From the moment we arrived we were treated with courtesy and attentiveness . We were taken to our table which was a lovely crescent shaped banquette and seated. We had a wait of half an hour for our meal in which time we were given fresh French bread, plenty of water and our specified wine and drinks. Our orders taken we were able to take in the atmosphere which was tastefully decorated in the English Christmas tradition with lit Xmas trees. Our starters salmon and peppers and mozzarella were light, finely prepared and the Game Pie was very filling all were delicious. The mains were all traditional roast Turkey which lay almost regally across our plates with its courtiers of Brussel sprouts, carrots, French beans, pigs in blankets and stuffing. Finishing with a home made brownie, superb ice cream and a Dickensian plum pudding. Coffee was offered but declined . Our extended family live abroad so we have made it a yearly event to celebrate with them in spirit at various local eateries and restaurants We all agreed that this lunch was the best not only for its excellent cuisine, but most importantly for its wonderful service. All the staff in the restaurant and throughout the Hotel were impeccable in their manner, in particular our two waiters Paolo was one who served us and nothing was too much trouble. We wish to commend the whole experience."

"I am reluctant to write negative food reviews, but my recent experience of The Royal Hotel was very disappointing and I make this review in the hope the management will see what was not great and perhaps change it. I have been a regular customer of the hotel for many years, as guest, drinker and diner….and for various reasons have not visited for about a year. The last occasion being a breakfast, which was great…. Not cheap, but good quality, well cooked and very tasty. Fancying a treat my wife and I dropped by for breakfast at 1045….. breakfast being served until 11…. The fact it was near to 11 seemed to be a problem when we were told that unless we got the order in very quickly, we would miss out. I had the full breakfast at £11.00 and to be honest was probably the worst cooked breakfast I have had for ages . The main problem was the bacon…..more fat than meat and undercooked, with large sections of the fat only having had a passing acquaintance with the heat. The sausage which appeared to have cooked through had very little colour and did not look at all appetising. The remainder of the meal was okay. My wife wanting a small breakfast was left with very little choice but to have a breakfast bap as there was no facility to order a smaller ‘Full English’ breakfast on the menu. The bap had the same issue with the bacon and the sausage and was presented as a hamburger…..not ideal from our perspective. Why can’t a smaller version of the full breakfast be offered? I have been a regular user of The Royal as it is a great location with friendly staff…but the fare that was offered to my wife and I today was not even close to what we would expect from it."
